Friday Rockpile: Christian Friedrich promoted; Clint Hurdle keeps on going
2008 first round pick Christian Friedrich was promoted last night to Modesto as part of a set of minor league moves. Friedrich moves into lefty Brandon Durden's spot in the rotation; Durden moves to Tulsa to take Andy Graham's spot as a result of an injury (he took Chaz Roe's spot earlier in the month); and Juan Nicasio will leave extended spring training to join Asheville.
It's about time this happened. Friedrich has dominated the Sally League for the most part with a not very good team behind him in Asheville. Modesto is 28-19, second best in the Cal League, and features Charlie Blackmon and Hector Gomez. The implication seems to be that we would have had to wait another month for this move had an injury not occurred. But it's better for Friedrich to spend as much time facing stiffer competition than to stay at a level he clearly has shown to be inferior to his abilities.
Troy Renck writes that this home series against the Padres will give us a better evaluation of where Clint Hurdle stands with the team. Eh. . . .
Jonathan Mayo offers his projection for the top 20 picks in the draft. He has the Rockies taking Missuori RHP Kyle Gibson. In this scenario, the Rockies could also go for North Carolina RHP Alex White. Either guy would satisfy me.

Enough with the Hurdle Speculation Renck
If it hasn’t happened by now, especially yesterday, there is no reason to do it after today’s game or Sunday’s game, or June 13th (Row meet up plug). Hurdle is the entire problem. We fans understand that. He’s not a help to any future improvement either (future 2010 and beyond).
But if the Front Office and the owners want to have Hurdle as their manager. If they don’t want to acknowledge this terrible start with a ceremonial and symbolic firing……fine. If they (the FO) are ok with this status quo, then as a fan, all I can do is point and laugh at them.

So you are thinking college arm over high school Russ
Either of those guys sound better than Leake. Given the Rockies plethora of picks at the end of the first round do they take a flier on a tough sign at some point?

What do you think of Leake?
I’m pretty interested to see what the kid does in the CWS against some good teams.

Good groundball pitcher,
but a safe, conservative pick. He’ll probably wind up being one of the first guys to reach the majors.

I still think
the Rockies should take a hitter with their first pick… they’re still likely to get a good pitcher at 32 or 34.

Russ, do you think this kid could be on the fast track and be a AA force if not getting the MLB look by next season?
Assuming, of course, he doesn’t stagnate in Modesto as well.

Why not?
Look at the pitchers the Rockies have taken in the first round since 1999:
1999 – Jason Jennings, debuted 2001.
2000 – Matt Harrington, did not sign
2002 – Jeff Francis, debuted 2004
2006 – Greg Reynolds, debuted 2008
2007 – Casey Weathers, out for the season, but is there any doubt that we wouldn’t have seen him this season?
2008 – Christian Friedrich, seems to be on track for 2010.
However, Friedrich is the only one to start his first full minor league season at Low A ball. Rox Girl made something out of that before the season began.

I'd imagine he'll be in the bigs soon
considering how even when he was drafted the general thinking was that what you’re seeing is what you’re getting as Friedrich was already pretty polished and didn’t have too much more room for growth…

FO logic does not compute
for this long mostly suffering rox fan. Remember when the Nuggets had those billboards all around town during the 90’s essentially saying “come see your favorite team beat up on our hapless one…good ticket deals available?” Maybe this same marketing scheme will lure enough opposing big-market fans out for the rox FO to get by but I’m not going to stand for it. If the rox are already saying they can’t really compete against any good teams this year why should we bother? Apparently we should only expect a possible victory if they’re playing another sub .500 club.
Of course, the siren song of summer baseball will still lure me to the park but I’m resolute to only buying rockpile tix, bringing my own snacks and going to games against opponents the rox claim they can be competitive with.

Well
every team will win 60 games and every team will lose 60 games. It’s the 42 in the middle that count.
The Rockies 60 wins can come from good teams like the Tigers. Think of going to a Rockies games a spin of the Roulette wheel. If you see a Rockies win..you are one of the rare lucky ones.
That said, I’m not giving this team any more of my money. If the front office has quit trying to even pretend to be a competitive baseball team (and by that I don’t mean winning this year, but I do expect a certain going through the motions..I mean fake it for gawds sake, I’ll take pretending to want to win), then I give up too.

I don't think the FO is going through the motions..
It’s more like the plan which developed from 2007 went horribly wrong and instead of showing marked improvement guys like Ubaldo, Stewart, Tulo, Corpas fell off the map. Now they’re scrambling trying to find the band-aids to fix the bleeding when they really need a tourniquet. It’s like the plan just blew up, now what do we do?

I'd hardly say that Ubaldo has fallen off the map
and Stewart and Tulo are 24. There’s a lot of room there.
Corpas’ signing was a gigantic mistake from day 1.

This may
come as a shock to those that read the ‘row regularly but I don’t have a problem with a plan failing. I have a problem with no lack of acknowledgment of that. The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray as the old saying goes. THAT I don’t have a problem with. Not acknowledging, or addressing the fans…that I have a HUGE problem with.
Crisis does not BUILD character…it reveals it. I’m not sure I like what I’m seeing (or NOT seeing) right now.

Big arm
I am going to be really annoyed if the Rockies don’t come away with a big time pitcher with the 11th pick.
My favorite pick all along has been Shelby Miller or Wheeler or even Skaggs because it didn’t look like the college guys who had the ability to overpower people would fall all the way to #11. I saw one mock recently that showed both Shelby Miller and Tyler Matzek dropping to 11 and the Rockies still taking Mike Leake which would make me cry almost as much as the infamous Reynolds pick.
Gibson and/or Alex White dropping to #11 would be a great thing for the Rockies….allowing them to take someone more experienced and more signable than the HS arms and still pick up a pitcher who has top of the rotation (though probably not ‘ace’) potential.

Quick question
How the devil do you guys know so much about undrafted high school/college players? ow can you tell if one is better than the other, or if one might be an ace and another a number 4 starter? How on earth can you tell?

Well first
there are scouting reports. The same as you’d see on any major league player: what pitches the guy throws, how good the fielder’s arm is, does he make tough plays? Are his mechanics good or does he take risks? Does he display good pitch recognition? Does he consistently scorch line drives, or are his hits more the grounders-with-eyes type? What’s his velocity on a fastball? Is he a pure dominance type like Stephen Strasburg, who consistently hits 100mph, or more a finesse lefty type that’s going to have to have a lot of luck to make it at the next level? Scouts assemble first-team, second-team and (I think) third-team “All-American” teams to rank the best-looking players in the country.
Secondly, you evaluate quality of competition. Is it a player feasting on a softer division that might get exposed at a higher level? Has that sparkly ERA come from getting wins against easier teams? What school does he play for? Does the school have a history of producing MLB talent? Is he a good player but doesn’t stand out because the team has so much all-around talent (think USC Trojans football team). Is he a good player on a bad team? Etc etc.
Thirdly, it’s observing, for lack of a less cliched word, intangibles. Does he take on a leadership role, what has his impact been on the programme, etc etc? Does he thrive in big situations, or snipe off stats when the pressure’s not there? Does he have a mindset that shows he can respond to setbacks? The “bulldog competitor,” so to speak, which has Leake rated so highly? How’s his work ethic? Is he willing to endure the oftentimes tough life in the minors to keep getting better to get to the majors?
In the end, the leap from NCAA to MLB is astronomical, and to be honest, most of it’s a crapshoot. But hopefully the above gives you some idea as to how they winnow the field.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

Thank you very much
That all makes sense. It must take a lot of effort to keep up with the scouting reports etc – how do they get to the general public, as I’d have thought that any team-affiliated scout would want to keep their findings to themselves?
by biondino on May 30, 2009 10:00 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Major league scouts do keep their findings to themselves, I imagine
But there’s plenty of amateur eyeballs in any crowd, and profiles are readily available on most college sports websites.
