Low class post, dancing on his grave.

by DeepPurple on May 29, 2009 2:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

My Dear Friends

Many of you have commented that my above post may seem classless, praising the fact that fixture of the Rockies organization is now out on the streets.

My friends, I must tell you that I have nothing but praises for Clint Hurdle as a person, as a community member, as a clear friend of the Rockies in a personal sense.

But you must understand that Clint Hurdle represented the organization’s inability to move forward to me. 2005 was a perfect year to have him at the reins, when the Gen R guys were first making their impact. Hurdle, as a hitting coach, was a good figure to nurture the younger players into MLB readiness, which he did excellently as Holliday and Hawpe have shown, and Atkins at least showed glimmers of.

However, after the 2006 season, my main criticism of Hurdle was that he seemed to be unable to handle a Major League pitching staff, which remained my criticism until just an hour or so ago.

Hurdle represented the training wheels for the team that got the young guys to a point where they could ride on their own. Now we see Brad Hawpe in need of his own 5-speed and he’s still stuck with a basket and a bell, and we have veterans who don’t seem to know their own roles in the clubhouse as they’re still viewed as the “future” of the team.

At the same time, we have a new crop of youngsters coming up, and my concern is that Hurdle is too concerned with the developmental aspects of the game, such as fundamentals (which we are terrible at right now) and playing time (which he’s running too little-league-ish). There are major-league batters that still need to be managed, and it’s almost as if they’re floundering under Hurdle. Granted, there is blame to be put on the players for that as well, I don’t deny it.

Clint Hurdle would be better served as a Bench Coach at this point, so he can still have his role of working with the young players and helping them acclimate. But it shouldn’t be the Manager’s perpetual goal to gather the ducklings, so much as lead the team onward in a fight to win.

So while I may seem cold in "dancing on his grave", I really feel I am celebrating what may be the end of this nursery school playground team and a move into being a balanced team of incoming talent and established veterans, in a self sustaining system that will make this franchise actually successful.

+ELEVENTY BILLION

I agree with nearly everything that you said, except I always felt that while he was good for the team in ‘05, the reason he was bad for the team after that is he was happy letting players develop on their own; he never pushed them to reach for greatness. Matt Holliday (sort of) got there for a season and a half; Hawpe has had stretches of brilliance; but Todd was and is Todd, Tulo certainly hasn’t developed like we would have thought by now, young pitchers have always been a train wreck under Hurdle, etc.

I had this reaction

when BoMel was fired. I felt bad for him, personally, because I think he’s a very good man, and the guys in the clubhouse still adore and respect him. At the same time, his ingame strategy was lacking.

Will the Rockies have a press conference?

and if so will ESPN break into their stuff to carry part of it? “This just in the Colorado Rockies have fired manager Clint Hurdle. ESPN was surprised to discover that Denver, Colorado HAD a baseball team. Now back to Sport Center with more talk about the Red Sox and the LeBron James”

I just heard it on ESPNRadio's SportsCenter

Contrary to popular belief, ESPN does in fact report the news. Even if it’s out here. Whether they’d break in for a news conference, I’m not sure I would if I were them.

Well, that's a relief.

I can’t say I feel like celebrating, since it’s a sorry situation all around and I quite like Hurdle as a person so I wish things were different. I certainly wish him the best in whatever he decides to do, and hope if he sticks around Denver (I mean to live, not with the team), people treat him well.

Now to Tracy. I don’t actually know all that much about him, but I’m fine with him being interim. I guess he has plenty of time to show what he can do. But is the right man going forward? No idea. I suspect Dodger fans would say no (at least, we had one awhile back that didn’t like him at all).

I'm not sure

a celebratory mood is what’s called for here. I’ve been lamenting Hurdle’s extension since he received one on Opening Day back in 07, but a man losing his job is really nothing to be dancing and shouting about. Clint Hurdle is a genuinely nice guy, and while we should all applaud the Front Office for doing what is necessary, there’s no real reason to be celebrating over Hurdle’s unemployment. Let’s not forget that he and O’Dowd are good friends, too – there had to be some really tough emotions in that meeting yesterday.

I think we can all be happy that the club seems to be moving forward…but let’s not let ourselves go too far. We’re still well south of .500.

It is possible

to emphathize with somebody else, strictly as a person with problems anyone can relate to, regardless of their income. If you use bottom-line thinking in anything like that, i.e. income, could-be-worse, etc. nobody would ever receive any support as it could always be worse, and there will always be somebody making more than you.

I'm not sure your mental health should be given a free pass, here.

Empathy is natural, particularly if a person is known to have made a social impact outside their employment as Clint has done with Prader-Willi Syndrome. If you knew the kind of hardship that families who are dealing with that affliction go through, and if you knew that Hurdle was about the only nationally known figure to be fighting for a cure, it makes it more difficult to swallow that any of us would be jumping for glee because a team that we root for that plays “a kids game” now has a better chance of winning because he’s out of a job.

Maybe Hurdle could care less about us, but he does care for a lot of kids who need the caring a lot more than we do, and his ability to help them as he had been may now be greatly impacted.

Some highlights from the link in case you're too lazy:

Or: “Why Jim Tracy is Hurdle II: Electric Boogaloo”:

There was little leadership from the players. Maybe even less from the manager’s office.
But when things went poorly, which was most of the time, Tracy seldom discussed the staff’s role. He never mentioned the coaches’ involvement in first baseman Adam LaRoche’s down-then-up 2007 until it had hit the upward curve. He never could explain how outfielder Jason Bay mysteriously regressed.
Quite curiously, the shortcomings that Tracy had in personnel or instructional matters seemed to originate from his never-ending emotional tie with the 2004 Los Angeles Dodgers, the $100 million team he managed to the West Division title.

He spoke about them incessantly, to the media and to the players. He even tried to recreate them, it seemed.

Before Tracy had donned a Pirates uniform, in the winter of 2006, he met with center fielder Chris Duffy and told Duffy he should play like Dave Roberts, the Dodgers’ leadoff man, even though all Duffy and Roberts had in common was being fast. Among the instructions: Duffy, a line-drive hitter, was told to pound the ball into the ground. He failed miserably, quit baseball for a month and has yet to recover.

Tracy told shortstop Jack Wilson, a three-time runner-up for the Gold Glove, that he did not like his approach to ground balls, that it should be more like Cesar Izturis of the 2004 Dodgers. Wilson had his worst defensive year in 2006 and, at Tracy’s behest, Izturis was acquired from the Chicago Cubs this past July. It was at Tracy’s urging that Wilson nearly was traded to Detroit in late July, after which Wilson batted .401 in the season’s final two months.

There was more: Jose Castillo was told to be like Adrian Beltre. Bench players were told to be versatile like Jose Hernandez, who also was acquired. Even Tracy’s batting orders were modeled based on profiles of the 2004 Dodgers.

And this one.

No one described it better than LaRoche, who genuinely likes Tracy, in the season’s final weekend: “If there’s anything we need to get under control — and it’s nothing major — is that he’s so laid-back that I think he can be taken advantage of. And that’s probably more our fault than his. It’s the older guys in here who need to address things.”

Now what about Bob Apodaca?

Will he get canned as well?

I refuse to ever celebrate someone losing their job. I always put myself in their situation and how I would react if people were rejoicing at my demise. It doesn’t seem right to me but I can surely understand why he was fired and why many here are excited about it.

I don’t know how much this changes anything but I guess the FO had to do something to appease fans since it is not even June yet and the Rockies are woefully under performing and out of the race for the vital summer attendance numbers that are sure to go down.

The Monforts will have to rely on the people of Colorado treating games this summer as a nice night out in a beautiful park, eating hot dogs and sipping beer than they will on watching a fun, competitive team. Actually, that’s not much different than most years, sadly.

by Redhawk on May 29, 2009 2:54 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

O'Dowd didn't take questions, which I found strange

And Tracy gave the boilerplate stuff – this isn’t good enough, guys are underachieving, we need to get back to having some resiliency and identity as a team.

I guess Hurdle will be in at 3:15 for some questions – I kind of want to see that and I kind of don’t – it’d be like watching a guy face his own firing squad.

Don't be such an NN... have you seen him mangage lately?

Honestly, and yes, I’ll go with the Denver Post Commentors on this one, Hurdle’s moves really shouldn’t have worked that year. You have no idea how crazy some of them were. We had a ton of potential, no denying that, but those moves… it was just chance. that’s it.

But now we can get to playing for real, while we’re not too far out.

by Rockie4Ever on May 29, 2009 3:57 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can hardly wait

for the calls to play more like the 2004 Dodgers come out.

Witty .sig goes here.

You can't have it both ways.

You can’t say the WS had nothing to do with him and also say the situation now is all his fault. There’s absolutely no way to quantify a manager’s exact impact, but I’d say he had some degree of positive impact in 2007, and some degree of negative impact since then.

My dad was saying this last night

That when a guy does something other than swing away, he bunts for a single, or the PH doubles to the gap, or the relief pitcher strikes out the batter for the big out, or whatever, the manager looks like a genius. When that PH GIDP’s, when the RP gives up 3 straight hits, etc, the manager looks like a goat.

I’m sure you’ve simply chosen not to recall things that Hurdle has done right, because they seem like “well he should’ve done that anyway”, etc.

However, the bigger picture is that you are simply never happy with this team and you tend to always come in with things to say about how terrible and awful we are and blah blah blah.

You get this stamp now good sir

I thought that promoting an interim manager like Baylor or Tracy wouldn’t change much. But in the last month peoples’ attitudes towards the rockies started souring (for good reason- major suckage by the team) and Hurdle became the scapegoat. They have waited too long to bring back a lot of fans that have turned their backs on the team.

solution that's win-win-win:

Let’s have the Rockies hire him. We really, really, desperately need another mini-donut stand over by section 140, so we don’t have to walk all the way around the stadium :-)

Everyone (especially Narcoleptico, and Franchise), just enjoy the day

Just have fun, be happy our team has been saved. Feel a little twinge of sadness for Hurdle? Fine. It’s human. Just think, though, he won’t be sitting in the dugout at the game!!! It’s going to be the Best game ever.

I love this quote from the MLB.com article:
“Am I sitting here saying to you that this is going to be a turnaround overnight?” Tracy said. “Maybe not. But I am going to do what I think has a chance to work.”

Maybe not? You know something about overnight turnarounds that we don’t, namely that they don’t exist?

Very good explanation as to why the wheels fell off this season.

A couple of quote worthy things here

On opening day in Arizona, manager Clint Hurdle posted the lineup. Clint Barmes wasn’t in it, despite a terrific spring training and assurances he was the starting second baseman.

A veteran player rolled his eyes and said, “Why can’t our manager just once not be a (jerk).”
Even during Hurdle’s most glorious run, when the team won 21 of 22 games in 2007 to reach the World Series, players didn’t give him a lot credit. They felt they won despite of him, not for him.
Hurdle let last season slip away, didn’t hold the players accountable. In truth, general manager Dan O’Dowd should have fired Hurdle after last season. He wanted to, but found a compromise when Hurdle agreed to gut his coaching staff to save himself. He added veteran coaches who had managed before, namely Tracy.
But there was carryover to the regular season. Hurdle let little things go unpunished during that first regular season series in Arizona – players not executing fundamentals — which proved a crucial mistake. By the time the reeling Rockies arrived in Pittsburgh two weeks ago, his job was hanging in the balance. He held a team meeting and lectured the players.

It came across as desperate, particularly when he benched Troy Tulowitzki for swinging at a first pitch a week later. Tulo was wrong, but so were countless other guys and none were benched.

Wow…. just wow.

That he’s ok for now, as long as during the offseason there is a real search for a manager.

Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to sound like I was calling anyone out or anything

I guess I’m just a little sore on the issue of unemployment right now. In the past month, my dad has been demoted, my mom’s pension has evaporated, and I almost lost my job and had to drop out of college. I really didn’t mean for things to get so overblown.

Can we just be happy that the Rockies won tonight?

I almost had to drop out, I didn’t have to in the end (thankfully). I just re-read that and it didn’t make sense, so I figured I’d clarify.
