How about
Stop discount hunting on pitching all together? I am sick of the notion that this is small market team. One question: If Mark Cuban owned this team would it still be a small market team? Thought so. It all depends on the owner. I refuse to believe, with the attendance the Rox get, that we are a small market team.

Ok so, ONCE AGAIN
What magical pitchers are/were we supposed to get?
Ubaldo is an awesome pitcher. So is Cook. They’ve had slow starts.
DLR is looking like a stud.
Marquis is looking like a superstud.
I’ll grant you that Hammel’s start was somewhat of a park effect thing, but he kept the ball on the ground – that’s a groundball in Coors or in PetCo.
The bullpen is shaky, but so are a lot of teams’ that have spend an awful lot of money on theirs.

I know, I know...
you want Halladay or someone equivalent, right?
You’d literally be throwing away your entire farm system for the next 3 years just to get one pitcher like that…
…and you’re not going to be able to draft pitchers like that unless you overpay for Boras clients.
No team located outside New York, New England, or SoCal should be willing to negotiate with Boras on any player.
What pitching staff has all aces?
Seriously?
Cook is a good pitcher. He keeps the ball in the park, on the ground, and doesn’t walk many at all. Most teams would kill for a guy like Cook. Ace? Obviously not. Good pitcher? Absolutely.
Ubaldo has a disgustingly moving fastball, a good curve, and 97mph to throw. He’s a bit wild, sure, but a lot of pitchers have been wild and still been very effective.
Daisuke Matsuzaka is a great example of being a big FA acquisition, and last season he was wilder than Baldo while giving up more long ball and having a much worse GB%.

It’s not that I am not a Rockies fan or don’t respect you RockiesMagicNumber, I do. You know more about baseball than I ever will. I fully admit that. I just don’t see it with this team. My question: If Mark Cuban owned this team would we settle for these players? I know it’s completely hypothetical, I really do, but answer that. If Mark Cuban owned this team it would be with the likes of the Cubs as far as payroll goes. Small market teams are teams with owners unwilling to spend money. I am convinced.
by Business Socks on May 3, 2009 5:12 PM MDT up reply actions
The Rox payroll is up almost 10% over last years
And the team signed Cook/Tulo/Corpas/Hawpe/etc to long term deals.
You can argue whether or not they made the right baseball signings with those guys, but your definitely of “small market” owners do not even sign their own players through their arbitration years. So no, I don’t buy it at all.
When the Rox treat their payroll in the way the Pirates, Padres, Marlins, etc., treat theirs, then you may have a case.
But they are squarely a mid-market team, and their payroll is squarely mid-market.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Also, don't forget
Helton is the 9th highest paid player in the game
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Owners and Markets
Ok, I have to weigh in on this one. The Rockies are a mid market team. They have good attendance but terrible TV revenue. The Denver TV market is one of the smallest in the big leagues. Put the 2 together and you get a mid market team.
The Rockies current payroll is 15 out of the 30 MLB clubs…right in the middle…where one would expect a mid market team to be.
If the Rockies had rich owners, they could spend out of their own pockets, but loosing money even for a short run, when there is no chance of expanding revenue due to TV market won’t work long term.
It’s not the Monforts fault as far as payroll…..excepting mediocrity as it’s high goal…yes
Yeah, the TV thing sucks
And I blame BRONCOS TOWN on that

So who are we supposed to get?
You aren’t answering that question. The criticism is that we aren’t signing all the guys. Who are we supposed to sign?
We sign Sabathia, Burnett, Lowe, any of those guys, and by extension outbid the Yankees, we add another Helton contract to our team that we can’t possibly afford to pay in 4 years.
Hawpe is OPSing >1.000.
Smith is getting hosed for playing time, but is still above .950 OPS
Spills is right around .900
I know it’s kind of dumb to just cite a few OF, considering that Atkins and Barmes are stinking up the joint, but right now, we do have good players, and a manager that doesn’t know how to handle them.
Just for the record, I’m not trying to piss all over your baseball expertise or tout myself as an excellent baseball mind. I’m just saying that the team is kind of bound right now to what we have. I think you have valid complaints, and I have them too, but there’s a point where a lot of us need to face the reality that we ARE in fact doing it the way everyone else is, aside from those really big teams.
Just for example, the Jays’ rotation:
R. Halladay
S. Richmond
B. Tallet
R. Ray
B. Cecil
None of those guys turn heads who aren’t named Hallady. And that’s not accounting for McGowan or Shaun Marcum, both guys who (I believe) were homegrown, or at least acquired in a prospect stage.
Also they’re fielding a mostly homespun team, with a few obvious exceptions.
But speaking of the Jays, look at Vernon Wells. $100M albatross. Do we want a guy like that hampering our team’s spending?

by Business Socks on May 3, 2009 5:43 PM MDT up reply actions
But
if the Monforts would have spent $5 million for the O-Dawg we would have one more player.
And that is the real problem with mid market teams. They have to produce players from their system…several every year. AND they have to all pan out, which of course they don’t. The players also don’t develop at an equal pace once they reach the majors.
But if ownership isn’t able to pay to fill in holes with quality free agency, then windows to win will be small..or too far out of reach to get through.
Now that the Dodgers are both spending money and producing players, the Rockies ARE the Orioles and the Jays and Rays. We hope to have lighting in a bottle.
You know darn well I wanted Hudson
and I am VERY disappointed with the ownership for not shelling out a bit for him.

I think the haves are pulling away from the have nots too
I think the only market getting screwed…it Toronto and maybe Houston and Dallas.
I don't see it...
If the last decade shows exacerbation in the trend going to the “haves”, why haven’t the Yanks, Cubs, Mets, Dodgers won a World Series this decade, while Florida and Arizona have, and Tampa Bay, Colorado, Houston have been there?
The haves may be pulling further away in $$$ terms, but it’s not necessarily translating to championships. It’s easy to call any year a fluke, but most every series should be Yankees/Red Sox v Mets/Cubs, just about every year, and it’s just not happening at all.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I was talking playoffs
once you get into 3 out of 5 or 4 outa 7 you are in crap shoot territory. But if you look at the playoffs, you will see them dominated by the large market teams.
Well yeah, a higher ratio of higher payroll teams make the final 8
But every year, there are top top payroll teams that miss. Year in and year out. So it’s not the $$$ that gets you there at all.
Yes, smaller payroll teams have to be run with less margin for error, but not necessarily zero margin. Not at all. The Mets routinely miss the playoffs. The Yanks can’t win their own division. The Angels aren’t automatic playoff participants.
Really, it’s hardly as unfair as the BCS. Every year, two or three lower payroll teams make it in and deep, and three is only one short of half.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Mark Cuban, or an owner like him, will never own this team.
Forget about it. If you think that this sort of thing will happen, you need to pay more attention to who actually is allowed to buy baseball teams. If there’s a shift in the way that baseball owners are chosen, than I might agree somewhat, but you really need to look more closely at the way that MLB controls things.
Whoa sorry.
Just making a point. The only reason the Rockies are considered a “mid-market” team is because of who owns them, not because of where they play. Sorry I don’t pay enough attention. Why can’t someone like Cuban own the Rockies anyway? There should be no reason he’s not allowed to own a major league team. He would be phenomenal. At least he’d try………….

I have gripes about the Monforts, too, trust me. But I think it’s often hard to distinguish between the Rockies losing because the Monforts don’t spend on talent, and the Rockies losing because Hurdle won’t let them win—in stat-speak, they’re confounding variables. Let’s put a good manager in the driver’s seat and see where we get, and if we still suck, THEN the Monforts should sell.
by Foxhole Atheist on May 3, 2009 5:05 PM MDT up reply actions
I have this nasty feeling...
…that even if you were able to make the Monforts willing to sell (which is about as likely as convincing the O’Malleys to sell the Dodgers in 1970), the only buyers would be outside interests who would move the club…
…if the choice is “the Monforts or no club”, I’d take the Monforts…
As much as I hate to say it...
I have to disagree. If it’s the Monforts or the Rockies playing in Vegas, start renovating Cashman Field, as far as I’m concerned. Sure, it’d suck for the Rockies not to be in Denver anymore—I’d be heartbroken.
But to have a team be so consistently mediocre is equally heartbreaking. I’d still be a fan, I just wouldn’t be able to make as many games—and the team would have an opportunity to win (the statistical outlier that was 2007 notwithstanding).

…most of them could hope to eventually see another ML team pull into the market.
We lose the Rockies after less than 2 decades, MLB says ’not a good market and too high to play real baseball anyway" and we never see another major league team no matter how large the metro area grows in the future…
I'm not happy w/ Hurdle right now
but are you guys kidding me right now. You are mad because they bunted in a situation in which every manager in America bunts, including the Giants, who used it to win the game against us in the 10th. You can call out the manager for leading a team that is the least clutch team ever if you want, but don’t call him out for something that is done by every manager in MLB.

we're not just upset with today.
It’s Hurdle’s management up to this point.
These are the same core group of men that went 21 - 1 to win the NL pennant. Never, ever, ever believe that MY TEAM is out of it.

I disagree w/ a lot of things Hurdle does and I think he is terrible w/ pitchers
but I get so sick of everyone on him every time someone has a sac bunt. He had a year when he took it to far, I understand, but lets get over it already. It was done right today, and any time Barmes does it its the right move, especially on the road. Players aren’t doing their jobs, plain and simple.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Iannetta is an On Base guy
His AVG doesn’t show it, but he is getting on base well. He had a better chance of not wasting the out than Barmes did. Barmes bunting…..ok fine whatever. But Iannetta has Power and On Base skills, and the past 2 weeks, he’s looked much more like 2008 Iannetta.
Iannetta is a “swing away” guy.

I think my biggest point is
the thing we are complaining about the most, from a strategy standpoint, is the same strategy that beat us. I don’t think the Giants are complaining right now, its a fine line between winning and losing and the Rox are just not getting any key hits.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I'm looking at an entire season
And the numbers don’t support Sac Bunting
I might put together a book report a la Charlie77 on just the Sac Bunt chapter of “The Book” by Tom Tango.

Maybe so, but late in the game, as it was done today, was right
and yet we still have everyone jumping all over him for every bunt, it just gets old, thats all.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I just hate bunting
I won’t back off of it, we bunt way too much. Bunting is good if you’re Willy Taveras or you have such good bat control that you can literally pull back and slug bunt a lawn dart right over the 3B. Otherwise, it’s an out.

No, it's NOT the same strategy..
…Bochy was smart enough to put the force back on, and while he didn’t need it, it also took the bat out of the hands of the most dangerous hitter we had in the 10th.
Hurdle, OTOH, decided to try to deal to the batter with an empty base and got burned—badly.
FYI, in this case, the book said give the IBB…or at the very least pitch around the next batter!
I'm simply talking about our bunting late in the game
was it wrong, cause Bochy called for the same bunt, how they handled the next batter is another debate. I just love how so much of this is put on the manager, and yet when are we going to say, why can’t Corpas make an 0-2 pitch, why can’t 1 guy get a hit w/ RISP. Managers are only as good as the players are. I would rather complain about our hitters being dominated by 2 pitchers that are not very good these days, yet they dominate our lineup, who’s fault is that?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Just because every manager does it
doesn’t mean it’s a good strategy. I won’t deny that it occasionally works, especially when you only need one run (which the Giants did in the bottom of the 10th). But over the long run, in almost any situation, IT’S A BAD STRATEGY. So many lay-fans can see that—Hurdle, for whatever reason, can’t, so he needs to either learn or GTHO.

+1
Hurdle is at the mercy of a completely mediocre roster and a far below mediocre pitching staff. Fire Hurdle, I guaruntee we get the same results. You could bring anyone in here.

I'm only calling out Hurdle for using Corpas
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Hurdle would be a much better manager
if he had a 2nd baseman, a SS that could hit, and a 3rd baseman that could hit.
I don’t like Hurdle. But it’s as much or more a talent issue than a manager issue.
His bullpen use is pretty atrocious
There is no reason Street (or at least Daley) was not pitching the 10th.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
That's easy
If Street gets through in 10-12 pitches, then Street. If not, then Daley for one, then Rusch for up to three, THEN Corpas.
Remember, Hurdle said he wasn’t pitching Corpas in a high leverage situation.
So instead, he pitches him in the bottom of the 10th of a scoreless game, with three other arms available in the pen.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I don't like his use of the BP either
but I think at times he is left w/ few choices as so many in the BP have been bad. I don’t think this team lacks talent, but right now they are not playing up to their level of talent IMO. Is that the manager or the player, I don’t know, its different w/ each team. I do think the BP needs to be overhauled though.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I think it's both.
But I also think, in the short run, it’s easier to rectify the manager issue than the talent issue.
by Foxhole Atheist on May 3, 2009 5:22 PM MDT up reply actions
The talent level isn't great
But it’s far better than 9-14 bad. Really, this is a roughly .500 ball club that is underperforming that.

How?
It’s not about the X’s and the O’s it’s about the Billy’s and the Joe’s.
I am truely sorry if I offended anyone
I really am. I don’t mean to undermine the Rockies. I guess my whole problem with the Rockies is a larger problem with Major League Baseball in general. I just can’t understand how you can have no revenue sharing or salary cap to make the game fair for every team like every other professional sports league has. It boggles my mind how one team can spend $210 million like the Yankees and others can only spend $38 million or whatever it is like the Padres. Just seems completely unfair. I haven’t been following baseball nearly as long as football and basketball so maybe I am completely off base. It just doesn’t make sense. I will always remain a Rockies’ fan through thick and thin. I just wish there was a level playing field.
No you are right on the money
…get it? I’m very punny.
If you look at playoff teams over the last dozen years, you will see that they are dominated by the large market teams. Mid-Market (like the Rockies) and small market teams, only make a few appearances, and they are scattered. The Twins and Cardinals are 2 mid market teams that consistently produce competitive teams. And that’s about it.
Mid and small market teams CAN be successful….but they have to be better and do more with less. And that’s hard to do. And as you look around…there are more failing at that than succeeding
Thanks
I guess I am just as frustrated as you could possibly be right now.

Well, that brings up a whole lot of questions, really...
….as in unfair to whom? The Pads cut payroll this year not because of poor ticket sales, but because the owner was going through a divorce. High payrolls don’t guarantee WS appearances. And, more to the point, there actually is revenue sharing in baseball.
As for a lack of salary cap, I guess I’d simply mention that the MLBPA is the only union that hasn’t been decertified by its own players because of its ineptitude. The top two dozen paid basketball players quit their union during the last lockout, and next thing you know, the union collapsed. The NFL doesn’t have guaranteed contracts, and they still haven’t recovered their rights from the strike 20 years ago. And don’t even get me started on the hockey union…where payrolls are half what they were five years ago.
Frankly, the players in the other sports wish they had what baseball had. For most teams, there is a level playing field. Put together a consistently reasonably winning club, and you can be profitable with a highish (but not necessarily 9-figure) payroll. Works for the Cardinals, Dodgers, Indians, lotsa clubs.
And for all the megabucks the Yankees spend, how many WS wins have they picked up this decade? Yeah, zero. No, the system’s not perfect, but the players will never fall for a salary cap, and there is absolutely nothing preventing ownership from expanding revenue sharing, other than the few owners who have the most not wanting to share it with owners they don’t trust to put the money back into the game (cf. Marlins)

RE: Salary Cap
Salary Caps – we don’t need one. You never hear good teams with deep pockets complain about this (Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees, Angels) outside of Lucchino but was only after the Yankees outspent evil empire 1A this past offseason. You also never hear quality poor teams complain (Rays, Twins, Marlins).
Teams that complain about salary cap are generally shitty teams like the Pirates, Royals, and the Rockies. The owners themselves may not complain but fans of these traditional also- rans go the the salary cap well a bit too often.
The Rockies use the term “self imposed salary cap” which is really a euphemism for “Our cheap ass owners don’t want to pony up” which isn’t the end of the world. It saves us from deals like Sabbathia, Texieria, and definately Burnett’s. What it means instead is the need to hit on FA signings and especially draft picks EVERYTIME.
Big pocket teams can shrug off a Kip Wells or (I believe) an Allan Embree. The Rockies can’t swallow that pill as easily. As a result we give innings and plate appearances to the Willy Ts of the world or Steve Finley if you prefer. The kicker to me is that if the Rockies had taken Embree’s salary + Barmes’ you could have Orlando Hudson.
In regards to the draft, awful teams are “rewarded” the first picks in the round which also means more pressure to not screw it up and more money for the slot. Bad teams cement their status as such by screwing up the draft. Here is a look at what the Rockies have done the past few years.
2002: Jeff Francis-could have had Cole Hamels, Scott Kazmir or Joe Saunders
2003: Ian Stewart-pretty good pick here, for what its worth Chad Billingsley was available
2004: Chris Nelson-could have had Jered Weaver or Stephen Drew
2005: Tulo-despite his slow start I still believe in him. This has more to do with hope than stats.
2006: 2nd overall pick could have been Evan Longoria or Lincecum but instead we get Greg Reynolds. This one makes me want to puke on my shoes.
Teams like the Red Sox can absorb Dice K’s salary and still pursue JD Drew. But where teams like the Rays have hope is through the draft. Same could be said for the Rockies. In the end teams either have brains or money. Cubs show us you can contend on money alone. Marlins, A’s, Rays and Twins show you can make it interesting with brains. Theo Epstein shows that its nice to have both.
InToddwetrust
Charlie
Lincecum went 10th overall. So if by a lot you mean nine teams you are correct. Of the nine the Rockies, Royals, Pirates, and Orioles all passed on Tim. All of these teams generally fail to find the the best talent possible for the pick they are alotted.
To say " a lot of teams passed up Silver’s Obsession" sounds a lot like " We weren’t the only one to screw up". While that’s true, how about expecting better from our team?
InToddwetrust
Lincecum was a risk
Still is a risk. I’m not convinced he’ll pitch more than 4 or 5 years before completely breaking down or just becoming Kerry Wood v 2.0. So I don’t fault the Rockies for passing on Lincecum. I do, however, think that passing on Longoria was a giant mistake. I really hope they go with the “best talent first” strategy in future drafts.
