Game #48: Josh Geer vs. Jason Hammel

San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies, May 30, 2009 6:10 PM MDT

Being ignorant of the fancy tricks used to make this look fancier, I'll just get this flung up there and ask for one of the usual suspects to add in the widgets. Tonight, Josh Geer faces off against Jason Hammel as the Tracy era continues and Hammel looks to master the Coors Field demons.

Go Rockies!

Some words to drop the lineup after the AP photo.

Some more words, we need some space.

A link to the last time Hammel played against the Padres. The Rockies won that game 12-7. It's the game Dexter Fowler stole five bases off of Chris Young. I hope this just about does the trick.

Where does the lineup come from?

Does someone in PR call up the newspapers or post it online right after Tracy fills it out or something?

It comes from SBN's stat compiling service,

Which is cut rate, not quite as good as those you’ll find at other new orgs, but when blogging starts making money, then maybe we’ll see about getting an upgrade.

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 6:39 PM MDT reply actions

yep

it’s time to see what EY2 has…or doesn’t have. At least he could be a pinch runner

I think it would add a lot to the team

though I have a soft spot for Barmy

But he’d be more useful as a utility player.

by Greg Stanwood on May 30, 2009 6:43 PM MDT up reply actions

EY2

looks to be an electric player at least with the bat. I want to see if it will translate against major league pitching

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions

He's a speedster too.

It’d be fun to see what happens with Fowler and EY hitting 1 and 2

by Greg Stanwood on May 30, 2009 6:46 PM MDT up reply actions

well

if it Stewart goes down he would have to stay down for 20 days (barring an injury to a big league roster guy) I’d hope in 20 days both Stewart and Atkins get going…and That will get Atkins traded.

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 6:48 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't even factor trades into the equation.

It’s pointless, as we have no way of knowing how likely that is. Assuming we’re keeping all the same players we have no, and assuming Atkins improves but Stewart doesn’t, he needs to go back down, and Ey is the guy to bring up,

by Greg Stanwood on May 30, 2009 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

by wolf213 on May 30, 2009 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Atkins issue

is bat speed. He needs to work on that against major league pitching I think. (some maybe mechanical…which would be good to work on against AAA pitching)

Stewart..i have no idea. I think he’s not seeing/reading pitches. and confidence…which screams work on in AAA

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 6:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Atkins batspeed has improved.

Starting Picthing

Hammel…is very meh…leaves too much fat and centered.

JDLR is too explosive (both good and bad)

And Marquis is the best pitcher, but a trade candidate

So…where are the Rockies 3 replacements?
1)Morales returning from injury
2) ?
3) ?

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 7:16 PM MDT reply actions

Reynolds

I just don’t see. Unless he’s gotten either better or added a pitch (or both)

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 7:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Reynolds is not healthy right now.

Hirsh is possible, but they’re not going to call him up just for calling him up. As I said, I think we only see one rotation change at most before the ASB.

Scrathing my head about that one

by nodakroxfan on May 30, 2009 7:17 PM MDT up reply actions

They're not replacing all three of them soon, let alone probably at all.

Neither Morales or Smith has been guaranteed a spot in the rotation upon return from injury. Morales will take a spot from either Hammel or DLR if they’re really struggling, but only then. Marquis will not be considered for trade until a while from now.

by Greg Stanwood on May 30, 2009 7:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Can we not trade Marquis

unless we’re getting something really good in return? I don’t like the idea of trading away our most consistent player for the typical scraps we usually get in return for these things.

He is a likely trade chip at the deadline if he keeps this up.

Before that, it’ll take a big chunk of his contract being paid for us to trade him.

by Greg Stanwood on May 30, 2009 7:19 PM MDT up reply actions

it's not about trading a good pitcher

it’s about trading a 9 million dollar contract…..so I’d assume he goes at some point

by Redhawk on May 30, 2009 7:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Your three questions presuppose that the answer isn't in the Q

And in JDLR’s case, it probably is. Up and down’s fine in that slot, particularly if it’s mostly up. Why is it really pressing to replace him?

Morales replaces Hammel, so that leaves Marquis, and unfortunately, I don’t think we get an immediate upgrade there, let’s hope that we at least get a solid future upgrade.

by Russ Oates on May 30, 2009 8:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Atkins has clearly outpaced them both this year,

So maybe that’s skewing my perception a bit since he’s more the more recent PR scapegoat of choice. It might make an interesting study to go back through and see who wins. I think those three win in volume, but probably not in percentage of comments with animosity.

by Rox Girl on May 30, 2009 8:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I can't say I'm completely certain, obviously...

… but in my limited time here, I’ve encountered far bore disdain for Barmes and Torrealba than anybody else. Atkins didn’t start getting really attacked until he was doing the Ground Outkins thing. Barmes was being mocked when he was hitting .290 earlier in the year.

by Greg Stanwood on May 30, 2009 8:30 PM MDT up reply actions

The thing is that those three have their strident fans,

Who defend them vocally and get prickly with criticism and their defense in turn feeds the people who are saying that the Rockies should look to do better with those positions. So while I think the latter outnumber the former in all three cases, the fact is that there was nobody arguing for Matt Belisle, for instance, so the one sided nature of that discussion led to a smaller total of negative comments even though he’d clearly be lower on the totem pole of most Rockies fans.

by Rox Girl on May 30, 2009 8:37 PM MDT up reply actions

True..

… so I should have phrased it as, perhaps, the two players that I think get the most undeserved hate. Belisle deserved it in my eyes. Torre and Barmes deserve some, but not what they get.

W.O.W.

What a thrill to see this team win this type of game. I have chills, and I’m close to tears for some reason. I just feel better about this team after the last 2 games. How long it continues, I don’t know. But for now, this feels better than any one moment since we won the pennant. WOOT! Go Rockies!

So. When is enough enough?

Haha.

I tried to ‘Like’ this. Note: not FB.

And I love Jeff's call.

“Improbable! And wonderful!”

I like Tracy's attitude in the press conference.

No pseudo-philosophy. No funny quips in response. Tracy actually speaks words instead of half formed ideas.

All managers do.

And I identify, because I do too, lol.

But Tracy comes across as a guy making comments on the baseball game he just played, not anything more or less. He’s backing up everything he says with specific examples from the game. He remembers everything, while sometimes it fwelt like Hurdle forgot what had just happened in the game.

Caught this little gem on the Padres MLB.com board:

“I’ve got to be honest. The Rockies may have some young talent on their squad, but they look like the worst hitting squad(or at least the most undisciplined hitting squad) I’ve seen all sason long. Some of them look like little leaguers at the dish….”

Barmes had a good game… he still doesn’t have any discipline.
