Monday Rockpile: Manny Corpas not long for Denver
Patrick Saunders writes that Manny Corpas' adventure yesterday likely has ticketed him to the Sky Sox for the time being.
Troy Tulowitzki, who played on his first losing baseball team last year, knows that changes need to be made:
"Things have got to change, and we have to find a way to get hits and drive men in," Tulowitzki said after the Rockies went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Tim Sullivan over at the San Diego Union-Tribune writes that it could be a long wait for the Padres until things get better. Let's hope it doesn't start tonight when Jorge De La Rosa faces Kevin Correia. I particularly like this line Sullivan offers:
You might patch some holes with reclamation projects, but it's hard to compete for pennants with a scratch-and-dent starting rotation.

I actually voted to send him down however
I would be in favor of sending Bob Apodaca somewhere. He’s the one consistent piece that never changes. And neither does our pitching performance. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

So as not to repeat anything already posted in what I felt was a pretty fair discussion, I’ll simply say that you’re making a pretty gross oversimplification.

Sorry for rehashing old news. I was out of town for a few days and unable to get my Purplerow fix.
That is a good discussion. But if Hurdle goes, I’m pretty sure Apodaca will be gone at some point. Maybe the end of the year but the new guy will bring in his on pitching coach.

Ok...so Corpas it looks like the Purple Tribe have spoken
Now….who do you want to be called up…and why? Remember Franklin Morales is eligible to come off the DL fairly soon (Thursday the 7th if I counted correctly). As is Ryan Speier, who is throwing and traveling with the team.
Or….would you rather see some one else like, Steven Register, Shane Lindsey, Damian Moss, Adam Bright, etc?
Casey Weat... oh, right
(Yes, I realize Rox Girl already made that joke a few threads ago.)
Boy, is that an uninspiring group of options. Register looked horrible in his cameo last year. I like Lindsay and he’s done some nice things out of Tulsa’s pen, but I want to see some better command from him before he gets the big call.
The likely outcome, I think, if they don’t want to carry Corpas’s corpse in the bullpen until Speier returns, is a Register call-up. I don’t see him being all that much better than Corpas has been, but at least there won’t be the temptation to give him any important innings.
Shame about Corpas too because aside from him that was a good collaborative effort from the pen yesterday – Embree getting the huge double play and Belisle throwing harder than he has all year in two strong innings (that two-seamer at 93-95 mph is a pretty damn good pitch, actually).

It probably be Speier coming back up...
I think the Rockies want to give Morales a start or two at AAA to see if his arm really can handle pitching (plus Hammel looked really good in his start). Speier will be the guy because he is already on the 40 man roster but doesn’t have any options left to not be on the active roster.

I'll throw a name out there
Louis Vizciano. He’s a free agent, has his salary paid for by the Cubs, and if you believe in the every other year is good and over used, followed by a crappy year and under used, which leads to a rebound year….this would be his rebound year.
I’d like to see what is left in the tank. He was very, very good when Torre blew him out with the Yankees 2 years ago.
Or in a few weeks, How about Shawn Chacon, who just signed with the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League?

That's part of the beauty of the scrap heap
if they work out…great…if they don’t…well, just cut them. We are talking about the last guy in the pen…not the #1 starter.
I think he’s worth a flier. The Viz was pretty good, and almost dominate in 06 & 07. He might be age declined, and over used to the point of being used up and done…but this is his rebound year
I just think it would be hilarious

Thinking outside the box
The Rockies could always call up a starting pitcher and move Hammel to the bullpen (or stick said starting pitcher callup in the bullpen.) The bullpen options in Colorado Springs are uninspiring, but Jason Hirsh and Alan Johnson haven’t been bad.
I'm kind of baffled that Tulo has the marbles to call out his team

Again..
I concur.
It does seem like both opposing teams and the umps are telling Tulo to “put up or shut up” at this point. Teams are working around other batters to get to his ‘easy out(s)’ and the umps are calling strikes way inside and outside the plate to force him to establish some plate presence (i.e. foul some balls off and some of the borderline calls might start to swing his way).
On the other hand, you can’t help but feel sorry for the guy when he gets the crap first and second strike calls on him. That at bat against Wilson yesterday was brutal. First pitch strike a foot inside, second pitch strike wayyyyyyy outside.
And I definitely do not condone this NBA hierarchy style of officiating in MLB. I’m a bit tired of the rox seeming to get the Clippers level type calls so far this season…

I'm just happy SOMEBODY says it.
I feel like everyone else is saying, Okay, we suck right now, but we’ll come around, so just hang tight. At least Tulo says straight out things need to get better.
Well yeah, and correct me if I'm wrong
But isn’t it usually one of the more humble guys who is actually performing who says it, and then everyone else says “what a selfless guy, he’s batting .343 but he still says ‘we’ because he’s part of the collective” and leaders are made and legends as well, but then deep down everyone knows that he really means “everyone but me” but isn’t actually carrying such an attitude, so it’s not a big deal /runon sentence
apply that to Tulo and it just kind of makes him seem like a jerk. It could just be me, though.

Uhhh
Forgive me if I’m missing something here, but isn’t the point that the TEAM needs to get better? Tulo is, after all, part of the TEAM.
Look, Tulo’s been piled on a lot recently, and for the playing part, he kinda deserves it. At least for now. But this, for me, is just splitting semantic hairs. He says that the team as a whole needs to, well, get its crap together. As I said, I’m willing to bet a lot of my nonexistent money that he knows that includes him.

Tulo's ego
far surpasses his production since 2007. The two have been on wildly divergent paths. The kid should shut his mouth and do some talking with his bat. God, it kills me to be so down on a guy that I was in love with so very recently, but he drives me crazy with this stuff. It's all just bluster
“I look for positives. We aren’t just up there hacking,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “The guys are working hard to do the right thing. I believe they are going to hit. But we need to get some guys back on track who haven’t found their way.” (Denver Post, 4/24/09)
"Now we need to play better baseball for ourselves, regardless of the opponent." (Todd Helton in the Denver Post 4/23/09)
"We need our guys to step up, and they know that." (Dan O’Dowd in the Denver Post, 4/21/09)
“We are not pitching well, we are not hitting well, and offensively we feel like if we don’t score we are in trouble because we know the other team is going to score, for the most part,” Tulowitzki said. “We need to get back to basics. It’s frustrating. We have to answer or otherwise we are going to be in for a very long year.” (Denver Post, 4/21/09)
Personally, I’m weary of the talk, and I have a feeling most everyone else is as well. When does all the chatter get followed up by some action?

I didn't read that
as he’s already doing everything right. I’m sure they’ve worked with him, but for some reason it’s just not happening. It’s not as if he doesn’t want to get it fixed. He just seems lost to me, and probably more frustrated with himself than even we are with him. Which is probably what you mean. But I don’t think there’s any ego there, just a guy who wants to figure out what’s gone wrong with himself and hasn’t been able to.
So I get back from a month in Europe, excited for my Rockies

From the looks of it, inconsistent hitting, bullpen and top of the rotation all are to blame?

Exactly, its all still being blamed on Hurdle
nothing has changed there at all. I guess another manager will come in and suddenly teach our guys how to hit w/ RISP. If thats possible I’m all for hiring that guy.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Well that's the thing
I keep seeing “we need to hit with RISP” but how DO you coach that? The lineup is still changing every day, and just because we had a couple of big games, everyone has now dismissed it.

Exactly my point, I don't think coaching can change a thing
unless he is just so tight that it is making the rest of the team tight. I don’t see that in Hurdle. He makes some poor decisions at times, but go to any teams blog after a loss and you will inevitably find fans who don’t like how the game was managed, but to me the players are not getting it done. A new manager may help in the short term, but it will not give us anything more than a short term jolt, until these guys start learning to slow the game down w/ runners on.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Well, at the same time
Will keeping Hurdle improve anything?

The firing that needs to be done now
is the GM. Assuming a replacement GM would be available to be hired. And no..not to save 09. But a new GM would be able to start looking at what he had in the organization, and what he doesn’t have, to get ready for the off season.
How many games would a new manager add to 09 if Hurdle was fired? Well, history shows there is usually (not always though) a spike of about 2 week of better play, than it trails back off. If a player can’t hit major league pitching, there isn’t much a manager can do about it.
Firing Hurdle
probably nees to happen, but I agree with the above that it really won’t matter. This is not a playoff team, and no new manager will make it so. I agree on O’Dowd, but I’ve been beating that drum for years and seems unlikely to ever happen.
and I don't hate O'Dowd
I’d give him a 6 out 10…that’s not bad. Just not good enough. I’d actually give Hurdle a lower score 4 or even a 3 outta 10. But there is only so much a manager can do. If a new manager was worth 5 more wins…this team still isn’t making the playoffs like you said.
I still think O'Dowd's decent, like a full point above yours, 7/10!!!
and his hands are tied by the ownership. I mean, I wanted Hudson. But when the boss says “no signing Hudson” what do you do?

I agree w/ this
I actually like O’Dowd quite a bit more in his job than Hurdle. I like both as people, but O’Dowd has done a quality job, where as Hurdle is still somewhere in the middle to me. I hope this team will turn it around soon and no one has to be let go, but I’m afraid Hurdle probably has only a month left at the most.
My biggest point is a change in manager will not help this team win at this point, we need clutch hitting plain and simple. I don’t think a new voice will help, but you never know.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
There's another thought here too, and this is directed at everyone in the "fire the man" camp
Theo Epstein looks like a genius because he has the Red Sox payroll to back his mistakes.
Billy Beane may not be a REAL genius, but he has an excellent track record.
O’Dowd has spotty ownership backing, and he’s just not as crafty as Beane is when it comes to trading guys in their 5th year – Harden, Blanton, etc.

Not sure how you coach it
Is it a fluky thing?
I remember that Toronto was abysmal last year with RISP, and yet this year they seem to be doing quite well. There were significant coaching changes made, but can you really give credit to the coaches for such a turnaround?
It looks like we have been awful in close games and, with a couple hits in the right places, this team is looking at .500 at least, even with a leaky bullpen and rough starts by our two “aces”
I fully support Corpas being temporarily demoted.
In terms of options of who to replace him, we don’t have a lot. Speier, as far as I can tell, is eligible to return on Thursday, so we may be waiting for that.
In terms of options from AAA, Steven Register is the only Sky Sox reliever on the active roster. He’s doing okay in terms of runs allowed, though he’s getting hit a lot. He has the worst WHIP of any reliever on the team at an even 2.00, and has given up 16 hits in ten innings pitched. May be worth an emergency callup.
In terms of performance and situation, Randy Flores could be an option. Flores is arguably the best reliever on the Sky Sox right now, has more major league experience than anyone else, and is also considering opting out of the organization. Assuming we could find room on the roster somewhere for him (which would require a DFA, outright, or 60 Day DL transfer), he’d be a prime temporary option, I think.
O'Dowd was interviewed by Chris Meyers yesterday
and said that Flores was really impressing him, along with Joel Peralta…for what it’s worth

Keith Law was impressed with Bruce Billings and Hector Gomez.
Eschew Obfuscation!
Gomez
could someone give a brief summary of what Law had to say about Gomez?…i’m not an Insider subscriber, so i wasn’t able to read that part….thanks
Here's KLaw's take...
Gomez missed all of 2008 with a pair of injuries, including Tommy John surgery, but his arm has clearly recovered and is at least a 60 at short. He has great bat speed, accelerating his wrists late and swinging hard every time; he’s on his front foot early but keeps some of his weight back, and then swings with everything he’s got. He’s a plus runner and got down the line in four seconds flat on a bunt for a hit, but in his last at-bat showed little regard for whether or not each pitch was near the strike zone. He’s an exciting talent and has the tools to be an impact player in the majors; he belongs in the Futures Game this year on the World Team.
Eschew Obfuscation!
Whew... Glad to know K-law and I are on the same page with those two.
I hate it when I’m on my own with prospects, it usually means I’m way off, and not having seen anybody else say anything really positive about Billings had me worried that was the case with him.
Is there a synopsis on what was said about Billings
I kept wondering about him, but no one mentioned him as a prospect and if I remember correctly it was because his stuff is not overpowering, is that correct. Is he a finesse or control righty, similar to Hynick.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Not really
according to the Cube, he’s a SO pitcher. He was popping the catcher’s mitt with regularity when I saw him, although he gave up a few hits.

by Andrew T. Fisher on May 4, 2009 4:38 PM MDT up reply actions
He's not like Hynick.
Every start I’ve seen him he averages over 90 on the gun, usually sits around 91 or 92. So he does have some stuff. My problem is that he’s got flyball tendencies with that fastball and as Law notes, doesn’t really have an above average breaking pitch to put with it.
He is deceptive with his speed, though, batters are always swinging late, it seems, so what’s actually a 91/92 mph pitch is having the effect of a pitch a couple mph faster than that. The FB rates are also showing that when hitters do connect, they’re getting under the pitch, meaning that his FB has better than expected horizontal movement away from RHB’s ands into the hands of LHB’s as well.
Awesome
When I watched him, I had thought he was throwing 95 or so, but I caught the radar gun registering no higher than 93 and mostly at 91. So I can attest to the “deceptive speed”
