This may just be ignorance speaking,
but it seems to me that there is a constant warning of ‘small sample sizes’ and yet half the decisions being made seem to be based on them.
I think the difference
is that using small sample sizes are less relevant when extrapolating to longterm projections…as in…Tulowitzki will be like Bobby Crosby because his batting average stunk in April.
When you use small sample sizes to project to just the next day, it makes more sense. Slumps have more relevance to the next day’s performance. Since Dex has struggled of late, he might need to make an adjustment, take a night off, or watch more tape.
That said, Hurdle IS guilty of kneejerk reactions to the batting order due to this, and tonight’s is altogether different than anything we have yet seen. I can see giving a guy the night off due to a slump, but I don’t see throwing a different lineup out until it sticks.

Tonight’s lineup reflects the Rockies continued search for a more potent offensive combination.
Seth Smith starts in left field and leads off for the first time this season.
"If you are looking to get more run production, which we are, then you put your run producers at three, four and five," manager Clint Hurdle said. "So I am looking at somebody to leadoff and get on base. His are as good as anybody’s we have on the club. He’ll take a walk and he has usable speed on the bases. It seemed like a viable option for me to turn to today."
Smith is hitting .271 with three homers and seven RBIs. His .426 on-base percentage is the best on the team.
For the second straight game, slumping third baseman Garrett Atkins will be on the bench for the first pitch. Ian Stewart replaces Stewart at third.
After a three-K day on Thursday, Dexter Fowler also takes a seat. Ryan Spilborghs gets the call in center.

Garrett Atkins, 3B COL
News: The Denver Post reports that Rockies 3B Garrett Atkins has adjusted his stance to try and help get him out of an early-season slump. “It’s frustrating when you are really not comfortable up there at the plate,” Atkins said. “But I am not worried at all about my season. I know I can get my consistency back.”
Analysis: Atkins is batting .224 with 13 RBIs and hasn’t been used in the cleanup spot for three consecutive games. Hopefully this adjustment will pay dividends, but you’re better off continuing to bench him in deeper mixed leagues until his offense does start to come around.

Mostly the guys hiting below the Mendoza line are those
that Hurdle is jerking around in batting order, or not committing to a set position. It must be incredibly difficult to think each at bat depends on whether one gets playing time. Hurdle should commit to players as soon as possible and see what happens

Wrote in his book that each player has a spot in the lineup they feel comfortable, and they perform at their best there. Clint Hurdle must not subscribe to this theory, or he’s not sure where everyone feels comfortable yet. I wonder though is he having trouble evaluating where each player hits the best, or are the player just playing inconsistently right now?

Me thinks...
that Hurdle is being a pretty terrible coach right now because he’s not committed to the team at all. With the exception of Helton, everyone is getting tossed around the lineup and subsequently not hitting well…any wonder why Helton is on a tear? he’s a great hitter, and has found comfort in the 3-hole. It’s crappy to think that the coach has just as much as to do with the team’s success as the players (not like that is anything profound, but you would think that with the talent this team has…they would just perform on their own)…

Rockies only have 5 IBBs this year. The Dodgers lead the league with 19. The loss of ManRam should help with that, although Andre Ethier has more than the entire Colorado team with 6!
