Game #29: Josh Johnson vs Jorge de la Rosa
The Marlins failed to win two games in the previous seven coming into Coors Field, but they could make it two for two at Coors tonight with their best pitcher taking the ball for Fredi Gonzalez.
Johnson averages nearly 95mph with his fastball, with an 84mph slider as his secondary pitch. He also has a "change-up," which can be nearly as fast as Aaron Cook's fastball. His PitchFX data here. Johnson could have held the Nl ERA title his rookie year but fell 5 innings short of qualifying, so he settled for 4th place in the ROY voting. Teammate Hanley Ramirez won that year.
Prediction: Tonight's result will help appease Rockies fans - it will either improve the team record or significantly increase the pressure on the front office to can Hurdle.
Lineups for both teams have yet to be used this season.

Optimistic
After a bad day at work, I’ve been looking forward to the game all day.

Jackie Robinson
Fowler
At the start of the week, Hurdle said:
"I want to give this lineup a chance to go. With Dexter (Fowler) in center, we only have two positions where we are looking to move people in and out: second and left field," Hurdle said. "We will play the hot hand accordingly."
With the week not yet over, Fowler has sat two straight games. Does Hurdle even have a plan? Does he use Dusty Baker’s dugout dice to make his lineup?
Anyway, good luck Rockies. I hope DLR has a good game.
God knows...

I thought the timing of that quote was strange
as Fowler was really starting to struggle. It was obvious to me then that if he continued to struggle that he’d have to sit….and then you have this situation

Let's get a win streak started
Go Rockies!
"I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline... I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - this greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle, victorious." - Vince Lombardi

Walk watcher
Rockies pitchers have walked 3 batters in 3 games. None on May 7th against the Giants. That’s pretty impressive. They have the fewest walks in the N.L. (96). They’re 10-8 when walking less than 3 and 1-9 issuing more than that.
No base on balls.

has been issued to the Nuggets, with none left for the Avs, Broncos and Rockies

Yeah
I’m just hoping for a change of pace there. Though to be honest, the Nuggets are in the playoffs, so if the karma insists on sticking with one team, I’d rather it stay with the Nuggets. Hope that doesn’t get me kicked off the Row.

Why do we ever throw fastballs near Ramirez?
Just give him a steady diet of curves and sliders, and if he walks, so be it..

Does
where you hit actually effect how you hit? It seems that different lineups should have a minimal effect on performance.

by Andrew T. Fisher on May 9, 2009 6:24 PM MDT up reply actions
well, it'd seem like that
but depending on who you’re hitting behind/ who’s on base, you recieve different pitches, affecting your batting
That makes sense
but it’s not like you’re getting pitches or situations you’ve never seen before. Like, the logic is if you’re not in the same spot, with the same guys in front and behind you, you’ll hit differently? I know you see different things, but it still ends up being a one-on-one match-up.
"Don't tell me about the world. Not today. It's springtime and they're knocking baseball around fields where the grass is damp and green in the morning and the kids are trying to hit the curve ball." -Pete Hamill
well, right
but guys try to adjust to what they’re most likely to recieve in the actual game, if someone goes from batting sixth to leadoff, it changes the entire thing.
Yes, small changes like from 2nd to 3rd aren’t that big of a deal, but Hurdle’s still messing with the lineup too much for anyone to get comfortable.
There are also different roles based on lineup position
The 3-4-5 spots are typically run producing spots, expected to drive in runs with home runs or RBI hits. The 1-2 spots are your guys that get on base the most for those RBI guys to drive in. 2-hole guys have traditionaly been high contact guys for bunts and hit and runs. It goes back to traditional lineup construction and the roles associated with it.
In high school, I struggled in the three hole and flourished as a leadoff guy because I preferred to be disciplined with the strike zone, and rarely took big swings. Being placed in a different spot in the lineup can also subconsciously change the expectations of what is expected of you in that spot.

Ah, good to know. Thank you.
So probably mostly mental. Either way, it’s really freaking annoying to hear Hurdle talk about them not being able to find consistency when he does so little to facilitate it in the first place.

Well I actually mentioned at the beginning of yesterday's thread
that I maybe he wouldn’t be a Rockies killer. If that didn’t jinx us, hopefully this won’t either.
Stop the press
Greinke just gave up an earned run.

Today it's because Josh Johnson hates baserunners
like only about 20 in MLB do

I now think that Garrett is pressing. He said he’s not worried but he’s gotta be.

With Ramirez gone...
…maybe we can fob Atty off on the Cubs? He wouldn’t have to worry so much about his job, and we’d be rid of an anchor…
He's only gone two months tops right?

Atkins...
A few years ago, I’d have bet my house that Atkins was a perennial batting crown candidate. the kind of guy who would hit .320 or .330 on a regular basis.
What’s happened to him is utterly inexplicable. Of course, what’s happened to Corpas is also inexplicable. And what’s happening to Tulo is…. well, you get it by now.
My thoughts exactly.
A couple of years ago my thinking was that if Atkins was playing in NY he’d be a household name (a la D. Wright). I thought he was one of the most underrated players in the game.
He really was back in 2006
he’s just completely fallen leading into his “prime”
