I think this is one of them.

How the heck did a team losing THAT bad make it into the regionals?

Was OSU like one of those Lehigh basketball teams that goes 10-18 but wins three conference tourney games?

I just did a doubletake on the lineup

Tulo down to 7th surprised me. If we’re going to play the “lets bat everyone where they want to bat” game, which apparently we are since Outkins is cleaning-up again, this isn’t where troy should be. Just seems contradictory.
Everything else looks fine, especially Barmes the slugger in the 2 hole, and Hawpe-Smith actually doing the clean-up. I just hope Spilly and Smith both have better days than their last outings

if you're reading this, it means my undying support for your team will result in its failure.

by fantasyfencing on Jun 1, 2009 5:13 PM MDT reply actions

Tulo was batting 7th in all three games against the Padres as well

Hasn’t really helped him much, but Barmes is swinging the bat better than him at the moment, as worrying as that is

by djmbluemoon on Jun 1, 2009 5:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't get Atkins in the #4 spot.

Supposedly Tracy doesn’t want to mess with what has given the Rockies success in the past. I hope this doesn’t mean Corpas is the closer.

Seriously, this is ridiculous. I understand that Stewart is struggling too, so you want to start Atkins at third base. But does he have to bat fourth just because he used to? This is every bit as bad as the stuff people were complaining about from Hurdle.

by RoxnSox09 on Jun 1, 2009 5:19 PM MDT up reply actions

playing devil's advocate here....

Obviously Atkins is in a prolonged prolooooonnnnged slump, but I can kind of see the rationale behind it, as he has had success there in the past. The problem is noone has stepped up to take the position off him, except for Hawpe (and batting him behind Helton makes it much easier for the opposing bullpen). I don’t see that there is a ready alternative to starting Atkins at #4

Oswalt

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

by Silverblood on Jun 1, 2009 5:26 PM MDT reply actions

Didn't Tracy Say

That he was looking to field a more consistent lineup? So what’s with Spilly starting/hitting lead-off?

by Rox R Champs on Jun 1, 2009 5:30 PM MDT reply actions

Fowler can't play every game?

I don’t necessarily think finding playing time for a number of talented outfielders is too burdensome a problem to have (unlike some of our other ones).

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

by Silverblood on Jun 1, 2009 5:33 PM MDT up reply actions

I'd play Fowler every day

Adding his dimension of speed makes us a different team. Spilly’s outfield play has been a little spotty recently also. Though that also goes back to wiping the slate clean I guess

by Rox R Champs on Jun 1, 2009 5:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah

The rest of the lineup looks fairly consistent to me (even Outkins in the 4-hole….) and I’m not yet ready to put bit-part switches under a microscope. (Give it a month or two…)

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

by Silverblood on Jun 1, 2009 5:39 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't have a problem with sitting Fowler once in a while

Especially against the toughest NL pitchers. I also have zero doubt he’ll see time in the field tonight.

Oswalt

has not been himself this year.

Too many HR’s allowed, can’t hold leads, very different from past years.

Maybe he’s slipping, maybe he’s lost his mental edge playing on a last-place team
where the key veterans don’t think much of the coach & Oswalt has no rapport
with the pitching coach. For whatever reason, he’s been nowhere near ace-like.

Of course, he started 2008 like that, too, then in the last 2/3 of the season got back into his normal, Top 5 pitchers in the league mode.

Perhaps the Rockies can catch him before he returns to historic form. We’ll be able to tell based on how many balls fly out of the yard. He’s been Mr. Gopher Ball so far this year.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

But tonight he’s been mixing in more curves & sliders than usual, so
batters can’t sit on the fastball, which they’ve been doing for the 11 HR he’s given up in 11 starts

certainly no fan

but how are you a “newcomer?” Sheesh I don’t think a day went by in college where I didn’t hear some DMB. I always thought he had a very original sound, just not a good one.

Most of the music I listen to are the songs I write into my scripts, or use for inspiration.

But I do have the radio on when I drive; never really come across them before. Obviously heard the name though.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 1, 2009 7:16 PM MDT up reply actions

I think you must be a bit young to have heard them in their hayday.

You’d probably recognize some of the songs off their first album if you listened to it.

by holly96 on Jun 1, 2009 7:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I can't say I know either.

I’m pretty young, but I have the tendency to listen to older music. I’m like 10 years behind.

Well, they first broke onto the scene in 94.

So right when I was in high school. It would depend on how on top of current music you were at that time. I know I wasn’t when I was junior high or younger.

by holly96 on Jun 1, 2009 7:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Or at least a sound you didn't like.

I loved DMB back in the day. Under the Table and Dreaming is one of my all-time favorite albums. Haven’t been as big a fan since then, though I do have one other album, I think.

As for originality, eh. I don’t generally think about that kind of thing (or at least it’s not super important to me). I only know if I like it.

by holly96 on Jun 1, 2009 7:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Being a student of criticism makes me overly critical about everything.

And therefore, extremely picky. If even one thing is bothering me about the way a song sounds, I can’t listen to it.

the ball hit the plate and ricoched off his chest. nothing more he can do. terrible pitch. didn’t matter.

what good would staying down do?

if he was “rising up” the ball still hit him chest high. whenever the ball hits the plate, its appropriately ruled a WP and really 90% luck if the catcher can keep it in front of him.

Mostly, yes, but 2 differences

Bourn bats left & gets a 2 step advantage w/ the same speed

Bourn takes batting advice & tries to change his game

If he ever learns to bunt as well as Willy T, he’ll be a better offensive player.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

by Maris6161 on Jun 1, 2009 8:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Sure

but so far in his career his OBP is less then Willy’s and his Strikeout percentage is higher then Willy’s. He’s an inferior player to Willy T. and thats saying something because Willy himself is a bad player.

by wolf213 on Jun 1, 2009 8:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, the Row has been dissing Willy T for a long time

Want to compare his OBP to the Rox leadoff hitters this year?

No records in the last 10 years should count.

by Maris6161 on Jun 1, 2009 8:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Sure

Willy T OBP this year is .325
Spilly is at .339 – with more power
Fowler is at .346
and the third guy that the Rockies have used at leadoff is Seth Smith at .413

I will take the Rockies leadoff hitters this year over Willy

by wolf213 on Jun 1, 2009 8:32 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually

Willy T’s down from where he started the year & is presently at .325, compared to Dex’s .346 and Spilly’s .339. None of those is great for a leadoff, and I’m not saying Willy T’s a great hitter. He’s not & probably never will be.

But he is a great defensive player & has made himself into a very good base stealer, which he wasn’t to start with.

He’s not a “bad” player. He’s an excellent defensive player & a below-average offensive player.

Funny thing about him, though. He played for the Astros before he was really ready & ended up in the World Series. Did the same for the Rockies, and as I recall won a playoff game w/ his speed. Now he’s with the Reds & they’ve got a winning record for the first time in quite awhile (admittedly, with much improvement elsewhere in the roster.)

Willy T was a contributor to all of those teams. He’s not a bad player.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

by Maris6161 on Jun 1, 2009 8:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Never said he was a great player (Willy)

I said he’s not a bad player.

Overall, he’s pretty average – plus on defense, minus on offense.

Like Counsel, he won’t carry a team, but he can contribute to team success, which is what ultimately counts.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

by Maris6161 on Jun 1, 2009 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Also Fowlers Defense is just as good if not better

and he has the Higher OBP. I will take Fowler or Spilly over him any day of the week.

by wolf213 on Jun 1, 2009 8:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed (as to Fowler)

There was no reason for the Rox to keep Willy T with Fowler in the wings. Fowler will be a better player in the long run, if he isn’t already.

Spilly, I’m still in a “show me more” mood on. I’m just saying that if Willy T had gone 0 for 5 tonight, there’d have been all kinds of negative comments. When good ol’ Spilly does that, not much is said.

But fans can pick & choose players they like & don’t like, & it doesn’t always correlate to performance. I’m partial to speedy, hustling, defensive-specialist guys. Others don’t like them. To each his own.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

Chew on this....

The Rockies are 26th in hitting in the MLB (based on BA).

26th.

And if it weren’t for Helton and Hawpe, they’d probably be dead last. I have never seen so many hitters go south together.

I just can’t get my head around what’s going on. We know Baylor is a fine hitting coach. We know Coors Field is still Coors Field. They haven’t faced Cy Young caliber pitching night in and night out. truly, it makes no sense. No sense at all.

Man this team ticks me off.

My favorite Rockie? Why, Ty Van Burkleo, of course!
