Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Callis says the Rockies are looking for a position player this time around, possibly USC SS Grant Green. But since pitching is the strength of this draft, White or Gibson wouldn't be too bad. Also, Georgia 1B Rich Poythress still isn't getting first round love.

Gibson

I read a report today that he was throwing 82-84 in the regionals. Many people were already questioning his mechanics, and that’s not a good sign at all.
As for that Rox draft, I like White and that hard sinker at #11, and Wheeler’s not a bad choice at the end of round 1 either. I’d be really happy with Green at #11 as well. As for Poythress, if he’s there at #34, that would be a huge pick-up at that point in the draft.

Harvey offers

more upside, but he’s been uneven all season. I’d prefer Green, but I’m not sure others will. He didn’t build on his great sophomore season—still, he’s a premium prospect.

Looking ahead to 2010 already?

If he wasn’t a Boras client, Harvey would have to top the Rox list next year.

As for White, his key will be the command. If he can improve that, he should be a good one. I agree on Green though, his slow start really has hurt him. I know there are questions about his passion, but the Rockies like collecting talent up the middle and Green’s the best of the bunch this year. I think he could be a great at 2nd next to Tulo or Gomez.

I would love that first round. :)

Draft...

There hasn’t been much draft discussion at this site. I’d like to hear what people think about the Rockies upcoming draft. With the Rockies having 4 picks near the top of the draft, there is a big opportunity to give a boost to the farm system here. Who would people like to see the Rockies go after.

Ideally, I’d like to see some power-hitting college bats added, but I realize that this draft projects to be much better for pitchers and it might make sense to go with an arm with the first pick. I don’t know very much, but from what I have read the following intrigue me—Poythress, (Tim) Wheeler, Pollock for the 32nd pick—also in 2nd round—maybe Kentrail Davis and Chris Dominguez could be re-drafted. As for pitchers, I like what I have read about Leake and White.

The ones I worry might not pan out are Brothers and Green.

Again, I don’t really know anything other than what I have read—I’d be curious to hear what those of you more knowledgeable have to say about this.

Fear not

The draft and college is not something I am personally knowledgeable about, but Russ will have a lot of draft material as it approaches, I’m sure.
