"It's going to be a long negotiation, I have a feeling," Jeff Matzek said. "If the Rockies are serious about what they're doing, they'll get a deal done."

And with

Bill Schmidt publicly saying that the Rockies have every intention of signing him, we’ll find out by the deadline on August 17.

Just hoping Jeff Matzek isn't cut from the same cloth at Matt Harrington's father

Does Matzek have representation yet? Do we know who that is?

Listen, this signature line is a big part of who I am.

Legacy Sports

Matzek is represented by Newport Beach-based Legacy Sports after the six-month interview process during his junior year. About 30 potential companies were narrowed down in the interview process, which had companies watch his games then contact his parents.

A worthwhile gamble

With two other picks in the top 35 the Rox knew they’d get somebody who was high on their wishlist, and as it turns out they got two in Wheeler and Brothers who should sign at or very close to slot (I haven’t heard anything to indicate otherwise). Even if Matzek doesn’t sign, that’s a pretty decent (if disappointing in the wake of Matzek theoretically not signing) first-round haul.

But at the same time, this franchise knows good and damn well it can’t afford to get nothing with the 11th overall pick, especially not with guys like Borchering and Alex White on the board who were considered less risky in terms of signability. I think it will take the largest bonus the franchise has ever handed out to get it done, but ultimately they will get their man.

I agree, I'm pretty confident that this works out for the Rockies.

As the FanPost on the right indicates, Oregon’s not really confident that Matzek enrolls right now.

Here’s another article from Oregon showing mostly pessimism with a Gerrit Cole repeat being their lone glimmer of hope.

by Rox Girl on Jun 10, 2009 8:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Matzek isn't feeding me any optimism pills

nor does he seem wildly excited. Maybe that’s pessimism by fear.

Maybe he's just a good negotiator.

I’m really getting the impression he doesn’t want college as much as his mom does, but thinks it might be a more real possibility at this point. In the end, I think the Rockies get their guy.

What are Matzek's options if he doesn't sign?

Given that he’s coming out of high school? I suppose one is: a) go to Oregon or another college, with next draft eligibility coming after his junior year

Could he also sit a year, playing independent ball or working at the 7-11, and re-enter the draft?

by FooMan on Jun 10, 2009 8:39 AM MDT up reply actions

He can go to a JC and be eligible in 2010, or he could go Indy ball and be eligible in 2010.

Honestly, I think he might be one to wind up going the Juco route

and try and get drafted again next year. I think Oregon could be a bluff.

by Rox Girl on Jun 10, 2009 8:43 AM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, but if he really

likes Oregon, George Horton, and Andrew Checketts, Matzek could help draw in talented players to Oregon (which I’m all for. Quack!). Help build a winner in the PAC-10 quickly.

I didn't get that vibe at all.

The vibe I get from him is that he wants to be bought away from college. I think he’d be just as tough about it with any team. When you look at players like Aaron Crow and his statements about the Nats last year, you get a much different vibe where you can seriously tell that they don’t want to play for the team. Matzek strikes me as a guy who would love to play professionally anywhere, as long as the price is right. He said he liked out club (which he would have no reason to lie about), and also said he enjoyed the idea of the challenging Coors Field.

I haven't felt that he was too fired up about us after I saw the interview on MLB yesterday. Hope I'm wrong and he wants to play MLB sooner than later.

Maybe he's just an underreactor.

I know I am. My parents once threw me a surprise birthday party, and people were convinced by my (non)reaction that I was onto them. When in reality, I was very surprised.

Well, I really hope that's it. I just know if it was me I'd be bouncing off the wall knowing I had the chance to play in the Bigs.

My instinct tells me he's seriously underwhelmed by the Rockies

And I did think, in the little I’ve seen/read, that he’s more excited about Oregon and about hitting, and about college life (which, at 18, is about the best thing ever). What I suspect this may mean is that he’ll be less inclined to compromise on a deal and more likely to go for his “precedent-busting” payoff – if he doesn’t sign he’s lost very little. The onus is all on the Rockies.

College life is almost the best THIng ever

I’d think being paid to play this game would beat it though :)

There are a lot more people going to college than there are playing professional baseball. If you’ve got the talents, it’s a no-brainer IMO.

Which reminds me, another Noob question

Where is Tri-City? Is it New York State, Troy maybe? And what other lower-level affiliates sub-Asheville do the Rockies have?

by biondino on Jun 10, 2009 8:35 AM MDT reply actions

Tri-City is in Pasco, Washington (state).

The other team is in Casper, Wyoming. They were the Casper Rockies until last season when they became the Casper Ghosts for marketability reasons. Yeah . . . .

On days that he doesn't pitch, they'll play him there.

As a former 1B/P, I would have appreciated such an arrangement too.

OK

Hmm.

“He said he feels more confident as a pitcher, but said the Ducks want him to play first base.”

I interpreted this to mean that he would play first base and NOT pitch (because of the “but” and the absence of “also”), but I’m sure you’re right.

I'm guessing that the front office has a plan

I know, they seem to be lost some times. But they don’t draft a player that they don’t think they can sign. It’s just not what they do. They probably have a good feel for what the kid wants, and they have a way to get it for him. I just can’t imagine the team drafting a player with a shot in the dark chance of signing.

by mkorpal on Jun 10, 2009 10:14 AM MDT reply actions

They better know what they're doing

The Denver Post type fans/commenters (which is a large part of the Rockies fan base), will be in an uproar if Metzak isn’t signed. You will never hear the end of how bad the Monfort bros. are as owners from the state.

And, frankly, this is the type of signing that can go a long way in erasing some of that misguided image of the Rockies as a cheap, bottom feeder, AAA affiliate to the Yankees, Red Sox, etc….

The Rockies will need to pony up the dough for this kid. This is a huge moment for this franchise.

by Business Socks on Jun 10, 2009 11:43 AM MDT reply actions

I disagree on one point

That the DP commenters will be in an uproar. I don’t think they pay close enough attention to the draft or prospects.

This

If this were more like the NFL draft, where people know all the college players, it would be another story.

by holly96 on Jun 10, 2009 1:26 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm not even sure that DP commenters will recognize the sacrifice in signing Matzek

If they sign him for a steal of a deal, they’ll believe it was just an easy run-of-the-mill signing. If they sign him to a big contract, they’ll say they are irresponsible with money, overpaying for a guy 10 teams passed on. I know I never got a great feel for the draft until the Row

Pretty sad

that what should be a phenomenal moment for an 18 year old kid sounds more like a 32 year old guy fielding offers from accounting firms. I dig that this is all business, but still. Pretty disappointing interview, but so long as he signs who cares.

In that the agenting world isn't 100% dissimilar

I think you’re right. It is pure business now. Nothing but, except perhaps when a local boy signs for his favourite team, like the Braves seem to make a habit of.
