Most draft picks

You can probably eliminate Holliday and Tracy for the nepotism,
And Bagoly’s not going to be a very easy sign, it will require a lot more than 40th round money to lure him in, plus given his size, I think his long term destination is at a corner. That whittles it down to five, which is a bit more reasonable, particularly since we don’t really have any coming in from Latin America.
Tarleton played first base this year, he’s going to be a work in progress moving back behind the plate.
Joe Sanders may or may not have already signed,
But this article is a pretty good read of how the Rockies have had him in their sites for awhile now. It seems to be a slam dunk and we should hear of his signing sometime this weekend, I imagine.
I read that as Joe Saunders and got incredibly confused

My favorite Non-Matzek Pick
THere were a few players I expected or hoped the Rockies would target on day two. Matthes and Stavert were expected, Matthes because as a senior sign and his abilities he was a slam dunk as a cost effective talent. Stavert because one click viewing of his draft vid and you’ll see his power sinker that will help him survive the tough hitting environs in the Rockies’ system.
Sanders, though, I didn’t expect, but did want as an underrated power prospect. Had Sanders not broken his jaw, he would have come close to matching Matthes’ HR total, and likely would have cracked BA’s top ten on numbers alone. Reports indicate his defense is sketchy, but I can see him being a Matt Gamel tpye prospect, where he’s athletic enough to overlook flaws while you watch him rake at the plate. This pick could be one we talk about in a few years when hammering out a Purps Top 10.
(Side note: The other guy I wanted was Kentucky lefty Chris Rusin. Build, stuff very similar to Zach Duke, and his sinker would have made him a very high floor prospect.)
I think I'm quietly hopeful about Wheeler and Musick
But Matthes and Sanders have to be right up there as well. Paulsen I view as a type of player like Mike Paulk or Jeff Kindel that the team seems to draft every year but ultimately doesn’t get much out of. I’m definitely curious about watching what happens when you draft three fifth-year seniors from the same very good college team and whether the Rockies keep that Clark/Garneau/Scott trifecta together, but that may be more of a literary human interest subplot rather than an actual baseball help story.

Is that the first time we've ever signed our 50th rounder?
I can’t remember signign one before.
No
We signed our 50th-rounders in 1993 and 1995… but, granted, the draft went longer than 50 rounds back then, and both were draft-and-follows.
Also Josh Hungerman was our 50th round pick last year, so technically we did sign our 50th-round pick from last year.

Both Matt and Joe Sanders, Tarleton, Testa, Ballard, Wong, Wheeler, Scahil, Ruiz, Matthes, and Perkins.
From Renck
Nothing I have heard from my sources indicates the Rockies have any chance at signing top pick Tyler Matzek. Nothing figures to be heard regarding the negotiations — the deadline to sign is Aug. 17 — for several weeks.
Ugh.
That's what I was worried about from the moment of the pick
Especially given two other picks in the top 34. I wouldn’t mind a top 12 pick next year, especially if we continue to win and lower our 2010 1st rounder with success this season. But darn it, I want Matzek.

Still don't mind the Matzek pick
as having a top 12 pick next year would be nice as well as a our normal first round pick. There was no risk in going with the best talent.

I mind it
When it’s a ploy. They did it for the positive attention they get for ‘taking the risk’ when, really, apparently they knew there wasn’t a risk at all.
Hopefully people start attending games and the team can afford to get him signed.
by LawrenceDavis on Jun 23, 2009 8:21 AM MDT up reply actions
I definitely do not believe it was a ploy
They most assuredly knew the risk was much lower with the rule of a high compensatory pick in place now. They were in a great position to take a risk on a great talent, but I definitely don’t think it was an opportunity to “pass on payroll”

Ghosts official roster
has both Balcom-Miller and Paul Bargas, so I suppose you can put them down as signed. Dustin Garneau, too, but he’s the only one of the three Fullerton guys.
It’d be nice to know more about the Ghosts heading into their season opener tonight, but the Casper paper does such a piss-poor job covering them. Not even a game preview article in their morning edition, it appears. They cover minor league indoor football with more zeal than they cover the Ghosts.

Yeah, but still
UW is on summer break, minor league indoor football is a step above demolition derby, and you only need one fluff piece a week about a Legion baseball player. The Ghosts might actually feature some players who make the Show someday.

The Shawn Chacon Experience - Life as a Rockies fan, one day at a time: Because we're all still recovering from those nine blown saves.
They
probably have a sports staff of four, all of whom are overworked during the UW/preps season, not to mention the fact that they have to prepare for the beginning of the next year and work in any vacation they might want to use — since they can’t take it during the other months. You combine that with the fact that, just guessing here, there’s really not a ton of local interest in the team, and it doesn’t make any sense in wasting resources on covering them. They do a fair amount of features and game coverage, but there’s no way they would ever bother — in this newspaper economic climate — to cover them the way you think they deserve.
by LawrenceDavis on Jun 23, 2009 4:43 PM MDT up reply actions
All I'm saying is
if you can work in coverage of an indoor football team in a league nobody outside of the players and their parents have ever heard of, I’m assuming you can work in at the bare minimum a season preview story for a team that’s affiliated with a Major League Baseball team.
And as for being over-worked during UW/preps season… boo-freaking-hoo. You want a job with summers off, be a teacher.

Ugh
Indoor football draws more than rookie-league baseball. The locals don’t care about the team and Casper circulates to the whole state. If nobody in Casper cares, why would someone Cheyenne care?
by LawrenceDavis on Jun 23, 2009 6:30 PM MDT up reply actions
There are Rockies fans all over the state
The numerous Rockies radio affiliates would certainly attest that there is support for the region’s professional baseball team, so I’d think there’d be at least a modicum of interest in a team that features the Rockies of the future.
Wyoming has one professional sports team. One. The Wyoming Whoevers that play the rookie-ball equivalent of indoor football do not count. And I can guarantee you that by your argument, there’s nobody in Cheyenne – or anywhere else outside of the 500 very bored Casperites that show up to those games – that cares in the least about them. In fact, I am positive I could survey the small Wyoming city I live in and not find more than 15-20 people that know about the indoor football team, while many more people would know about the pro baseball team.
Who knows, maybe the Ghosts would draw better if the local paper acknowledged their existence? Not like there’s anything else to do in the summer in that jerkwater town besides tour the city’s various meth labs.

Look
They do cover the team. They aren’t going to cover the team like the Post covers the Rockies. They cover the home games and file staff reports for the road games. I work for a newspaper with a minor league team in town. Nobody gives a shit. The coverage we provide is on par with the coverage Casper provides.
Casper is a nice town that really enjoys its rodeo and University of Wyoming as well as some high school sports. The Ghosts, generally populated with foreign players with no ties to the area, aren’t a big draw. They have limited resources and can’t waste them on something that people don’t care about.

Yes
This suggests, to me, that there’s interest in the team. One story a week is not very much.
In three years, it appears that there has been about 120 stories on the team, about half of which are not done covered live.

Not sure I follow
I am having trouble understanding what the big deal is. I would be horrified if the FO used press coverage as a factor in deciding where to place a Rookie level team. It seems that for a team with very young, often foreign players, less press would be better – for those that are fluent in English, reading day-in and day-out how bad/good they are really can’t be of much value.
Besides I’m sure Ringolsby will be as good or better of a source – Plus more fun to read.
TGFPR!!
You're missing the point
I’m not saying that the Casper Jerkwater Tribune must cover the Ghosts as though they are a big league ballclub. I was just surprised to see that there was nothing in the way of a season preview story the day before the season began (contrast that with the Tri-City Herald, which had three days of stories previewing the Dust Devils season, talking to the manager, previewing the rotation and the lineup, and so on) and surprised not to see even a short writeup of the season opening game (a trained ape could write a 100-200 word recap of a game based on the boxscore alone).
The debate then turned into, basically, what do Casperites care more about: indoor football or minor league baseball? I insist it’s the latter because I can’t imagine any place on God’s green earth that would care more about the former. But then again, this is Casper, the meth capital of the West, we’re talking about.

Excellent points here.
The Tri-City Herald does provide excellent coverage of the Dust Devils… which is what you’d expect from a town where there’s not a lot else to cover sports-wise. Many minor league teams don’t have great coverage in their local papers. The Tennessean (that’s the local paper in Nashville) doesn’t give that much coverage to the Nashville Sounds… but then, their sports section has an NFL team, an NHL team, and two major college teams (UT and Vandy) to cover. Sacrificing coverage of a AAA baseball team for those is perfectly acceptable. Not giving good coverage to a minor league baseball team when the other things going on are a minor-league indoor football team, rodeo, high school sports, and a mid-major college team (sorry, any Cowboys fans reading this) is much different.
Any thoughts on Paulsen?
Is he really talented enough to move up into the top two rounds as a senior??
TGFPR!!
I doubt it...
We saw how Rich Poythress, a better prospect by most measures, fell this year, for instance, and without enough power, there’s no reason to think that teams would suddenly change their minds about him. Even if he did start jacking them out, a lot of teams would wonder if it was sustainable. I’m not saying that it’s impossible, but that seems a little high on the hype side.

I would bet there's little to no hang-up with Brothers
beyond this being possibly an above slot deal that is being “held up” by the comissioner’s office. The Rockies have little leverage with Brothers because they do not get his pick back if they fail to sign him, and I trust that the Rockies did their due diligience to be sure that Brothers would sign upon being drafted. Nobody should be worried about Brothers.
I’m really not that worried about anyone in the top ten rounds outside of Matzek, other than that I’m surprised that deals haven’t been announced for Arenado or Pauslen, considering how much emphasis Schmidt places on a player getting on the field quickly.
I was starting to wonder about Arenado and Paulsen

Designed that way??
It appears that this was by design. We can only presume that Arenado will fall in line once the guys in front of him sign. It would be hard to sign him to say a $2mil deal and then try and convince Brothers that he needs to take less.
At this point I don’t expect any more signings until the middle of August. Maybe Hambright who is a 2nd year JUCO.
