Saturday Rockpile: Prospect Nelson likely to miss season, Morales optioned, more.
Chris Nelson appears to need season-ending surgery on the torn ligament in his right wrist, although it has been temporarily postponed while he seeks a second opinion. Nelson originally injured the wrist while sliding back on May 8th, and probably made it worse by trying to return 11 days later. This is a tough break for Nelson, who missed a large chunk of last season as well. He was hitting a respectable .280/.355/.477 at the time he went down, and looked to be building off of what he started in the Arizona Fall League this past off-season, where he garnered rave reviews for his quick bat, speed, and overall athleticism. The 23-year-old prospect still has time to make a big-leaguer out of himself, but so far his progress has been slow, and this doesn't help matters much.
Franklin Morales was officially optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs before yesterday's game. Jim Tracy was obviously discouraged by Morales' disappointing start the other night, but on the other hand, he doesn't really need to mess with the big league rotation at the moment, either. Morales was able to find the strike zone in his start, but did not show good control within said zone, and his velocity was WAY down (averaging 88 MPH) - something that has been a concern for the past season and a half now. Within the same story, Jack Etkin mentioned that Taylor Buchholz will throw a bullpen session today and if it goes well, he will travel to Modesto on Tuesday to begin a 30-day rehab assignment.
A couple of different articles highlight Ian Stewart's current hot streak - here and here. The latter gives an update on injured utility man Jeff Baker, who will begin hitting off a tee today.
This Bleacher Report piece on Jason Grilli's departure for Texas features our very own Poseidon's Fist, who gave his thoughts on the Gas Can's exit from Denver (and points out that the Rangers have been the Rockies' very own garbage truck this season). The article also mistakenly refers to this blog as "Purple Cow." Fair enough.
Speaking of Posiedon's Fist, I'm sure he'll be at the Rowbot (or should I call it Cowbot?) BBQ today...if you're in the Denver area and are all for having a good time, stop by and share some food, drinks, and conversation with other members of Purple Row - details here. I will be there in spirit.

It’s a small thing, but Fangraphs has a post on Jason Marquis. I guess it could be a fanshot, but I assumed it would end up in this AM’s Rockpile.
FanShot it.

Yeah
We miss things sometimes. You can wait until the ‘Pile comes out and FanShot it if it’s not included, or you can toss it in the ’Pile comments like so.

I will argue here
I don’t care but a cow is not a respectable mascot (purple dinosaurs aren’t either) no matter what color it was. I think our mascot would be better if he lost his purple color because it reminds us of a freaky kids TV show. Cows just aren’t entertaining or fun unless you are eating it or watching a rodeo.

I love the thought of a purple cow as a mascot. It seems as apropriate (and random) as any baseball mascot.

Awesome dino
Would have been WAY cooler than Dinger.
Though the costume might have been akward.
Grilli
It seemed a little odd that he was DFA’s rather than some other players (Peralta or Fogg). I wonder if there was a story there. Obviously Grilli has ability, as PF mentioned. However, the Rockies are the 4th team to give up on him, so maybe it’s a simple case of him not being as good as those guys.
I was surprised too...but Grilli not as good as Fogg or Peralta?
Not buying that. They are just as much journeyman as Grilli. Detroit fans hated Grilli mostly due to his tendency to blow up at home, but he’s been quite effective in his career. I just think he’s got a bit of a raw deal each place, but relief pitchers are migratory by nature anyway. One thing I had not picked up on that was mentioned in the article was how much Hurdle leaned on him in April. That may have had more of an effect than a snowballing lack of confidence.

Why not?
Again, the Rockies were the 4th team to give up on him. If there’s something to Grilli, many are missing it. Plus he was so-so in Detroit and so-so in 2009, bad in his rule 5 year. So they took a flier on another journeyman that for whatever reason, they liked better. I don’t personally see anything to prefer the other guys (esp Fogg), but I also don’t see something untouchable in Grilli, either.
His K9 was fantastic

Hurdle
I don’t get that…what are you getting at? He made 11 appearances and 8.1 IP in April. That burned him out?
just a correlation
He was being used in higher leverage situations, which means more regular pitching, and maybe, just maybe, he’s not really ideal for that. His skillset would suggest otherwise, but maybe he just needs to be a 7th inning guy or used in mopup roles.
Or we could just be like a lot of people and blame the WBC or something.

Peralta and Fogg were pitching well. Grilli was not.
Simple as that, I think.

I still don't make tht move
Grilli was very good for a whole year. Every pitcher is going to have bad stretches. It seems shortsighted to get rid of him after two weeks of good pitching by two guys that weren’t close to the roster spot in ST, and don’t have close to the talent.

Whether or not it was the best move or not will never be determinable.
All I know is that it hasn’t hurt us, and maybe even helped us so far. Therefore, I’m absolutely okay with it.

I'm a little curious re: Bleacher Report
The first few paragraphs suggest Rockies fans can’t wait for Grilli to get out of here, but quotes no one. I know of no one that was eager to get rid of him, but he was bent on illustrating that as the prevailing opinion. Anyone else find it sketchy?

Yeah I found that extremely sketchy...
I wonder which Rockies fans he’d been talking too, because I don’t remember much of that going on around here. Maybe he was reading the comments section of the Post.

So, maybe this is not the proper forum
BUT, something has been bothering me for a while. And I know this smacks of “the guy who doesn’t vote complaining about congress,” but why didn’t Juan Nicasio make the cut on this latest PURP list? I know he’s old for the Asheville level, but for this season and last he’s pretty consistently produced, unlike some of the other names between 26-30.
Well
Nicasio didn’t make his first start this season until May 29, so we couldn’t take his performance this year into account when we did the poll. He was good last year but given his age, it had to be taken as more of a “nice performance, but let’s see what he can do at higher levels,” especially given that I haven’t heard the true scout types (i.e. Baseball America) talking about him much.
When you get down to players 26-30 on the list, you’re generally talking about guys who are maybe bench players in the majors (Colonel, Miller, Kindel) or somewhat interesting prospects in the low minors (Robinson and Frazier.) Robinson has had a credible performance for a 20-year-old; Frazier is a pitcher who relies on getting groundouts and so is going to be dependent on his defense, which may or may not be all that good (and is also 20.)
Or guys who haven't reached the States yet,
like Ricardo Ferrer and David Kandilas.

This is exactly a situation if you don't vote, you can't complain
There are so few ballots in the PuRPs poll that one or two more could swing things considerably, particularly if there’s a favorite player like this. The major reason some of those last few players listed are as high as they are is because somebody champions them in their ballot.
I didn't vote because I don't know enought about most of the prospects to make an informed decision.
Say this much for big league baseball - it is beyond question the greatest conversation piece ever invented in America. ~Bruce Catton

you heard the man, cowbots.
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
I'm calling us Cowbots from now on.

I love this quote from the DP piece:
“This is how I was brought up to play, coming from California and playing at Long Beach State,” said Tulowitzki, who cranked a solo homer to lead off the fourth. “It’s a lot of fun — moving runners over and doing anything you can to win games. Not to say we didn’t before, but like you saw tonight, there were slash plays like Ubaldo’s, and hit-and-runs and drag bunts. It keeps you moving.”
I just see him saying it with a big smile, feeling energized. Keep crankin’ Tulo!
"Don't tell me about the world. Not today. It's springtime and they're knocking baseballs around fields where the grass is damp and green in the morning and the kids are trying to hit the curve ball." -Pete Hamill
We're reaping the benefits of Tulo being an emotionally invested player now
He can really dig in and ride success. It just seems like he lets the bad get to him just as much when times are tough.

Totally agree.
It certainly could be said that his ’07 numbers were partially a product of the Rockies actually contending for a good bit of the year, spurring him on.

Denver has always had a reputation of being a "Cow Town"
but not sure I want my baseball team named for cows. Would it be the Colorado Cattle? Mile High Heifers? Though I wouldn’t mind the Colorado Cowboys or the Colorado Wranglers.
But Cow mascot?…..I don’t think this is better then Dinger:

The original NFL Fever on XBox
had an alternate uniform called the Cows. Black and white, same striping scheme as the Broncos

Love purple unis & caps, hate purple sports mascots – reminds me of Barney and Eeyore (he was purple right?)
Against any purple animals/fictional mascot unless it was based on this cool-looking bird:

One thing about Dinger though: kids got nuts for him.

Re: your site.
I understand the purple background, but personally it’s a strain on the eyes and has a heavy feel to it. Also the site seems cluttered, though I’m not sure you could do anything about that; likely a Blogspot template.
But always nice to see another Rockies fan and writer, so keep it up man!
