Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Tracy Ringolsby reported that Yorvit Torrealba is heading home "to Venezuela to deal with personal matters."

Edwin Bellorin will take his place on the active roster. No note as to whom will be removed from the 40-man for this move. Torrealba was placed on the restricted list, so no move is necessary regarding the 40-man roster (Thanks to WolfMarauder for the tip)

Roster

I see that the mlb.com 40-man has been updated to list Bellorin, but Torrealba’s also still on it. If I’ve counted correctly, there are 44 members, with 3 on the 60-day DL.

So I don’t know if someone’s about to be removed from the 40-man, put on the 60-day, or if Torrealba is on the restricted list or what. (I’ve read someone on the bereavement list still is on the 40-man, but I can’t keep up with the transactions trivia!)

It won't be a DL move unless it is someone we do not expect.

Daley, Morales, Speier, and Iannetta, our 15 Day DLers, are all on their way back. The move will either be Torrealba to a list where he does not count, or the designation of an inactive player for assignment.

Sorry, I got your page, but due to an eddy in the space-time continuum it was far too late...

Here’s what I’ve gathered after some cursory research:

Restricted List

Players who fail to report to the team or who fail to sign an agreed-upon contract with the team. Players on this list do not count towards the Reserved List (40 man) or Active List (25 man) limits. Players on the restricted list do not receive pay, and may not sign with another team. A player may remain on this list for two consecutive years before he is removed – either activated or released. Often, placing a player on the Restricted List is akin to releasing him without fully relinquishing his rights. However, sometimes younger international signees can be placed on the Restricted List while they are finishing school.

Though it isn’t exactly on point, here’s what my PR Academy article on the bereavement list said:

Bereavement List

Implemented in 2003, the Bereavement List allows clubs to replace players on the 25 man roster who are experiencing a family emergency or the death of a loved one for 3-7 days with the permission of the commissioner’s office. The definition of loved one has in 2004 been expanded to include extended family or in-laws, but does not include the birth of a player’s child. The team must use a 40 man roster player to replace the bereaved player. Players on the bereavement list accumulate major league service time.

So what would be the reason for putting him on the Restricted List rather than the Bereavement List?

The only thing I can think of is that they think or know he’ll be gone for more than 7 days.

Yeah, I was confused about this delineation in this case...

I mean, the facts of the case would suggest a bereavement list position, but Torrealba being on the reserved list is something that maybe means…he isn’t coming back?

It’s certainly something to ponder.

The restricted list doesn't seem to cover a "family issue" and the bereavement list wouldn't allow for replacement of him.

Wonder if the commissioner’s office has any leeway include him on either and allow the replacement?

Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?

From Thomas Harding:

“Cinderella story
For all the coverage and excitement about the Draft, the best stories are about the player who never hears his name called. For the Rockies, it’s right-hander Matt Daley, who signed in 2003.

When the Rockies needed a reliever, they called up Daley from Triple-A Colorado Springs. He went 0-1 with 4.19 ERA in eight appearances before stepping on a bat while backing up home plate and suffering a sprained left foot. When he returns from the disabled list, he’ll have chances. Remember, the Rockies have had good results from an undrafted righty before — Steve Reed, who helped the 1995 club to the World Series and returned to the club later in his career to help a young bullpen."

Uhhhh….. world series?

Torrealba was placed on the Restricted List.

No player needs to be designated for assignment.

Buller is probably coming off DL tomorrow and

it wouldn’t suprise me to see him go to Sky Sox since he has AAA experience.
These clubs sure are tight liped on things like what kind of business he is leaving for but often it is a death in the family. I hope not.
