Game #68: Charlie Morton vs. Jason Hammel
Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies, Jun 20, 2009 6:10 PM MDT
Don't look now, but with a strong start today, Jason Hammel will become the Rockies' third starting pitcher with an ERA below 4.00. 2008 was the only season we finished with more than one. Also, if we win tonight, that will be 15 of 16. I believe that will be the best 16 game streak in franchise history in one season. We won 15 of 16 regular season games covering the last 15 of 2007 and Opening Day in 2008.
Morton came in the Nate McLouth trade. This will be his second start of the season, his first since June 10 at Atlanta, where he lasted just one inning before leaving with a hamstring injury. He was abysmal with Atlanta last year, going 4-8 with a 6.15 ERA but had pitched very well in AAA this season before his callup and injury. Morton is your typical four pitch pitcher, throwing a fastball (90-93), slider (80-84), curveball (~75) and changeup (80-83). He has suffered from control issues his entire career in the minors and majors except this season in AAA. Maybe we can coax out old demons.
Hammel is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in June, and the Rockies have won his last five starts.
Jim Tracy goes with the same lineup as last night:

Nobody has proven to me yet that consistent lineups play better baseball.

regardless...I'm a fan of consistency
and getting consistent ABs for those performing is always a plus

That is certainly a plus.
I’m just not going to believe that there is a correlation between # of lineups used and winning percentage until I see it.

Wind blowing Southeast, large array of rain to the Northwest
Could be a while, especially seeing as the rain hasn’t even gotten here yet.
If the wind changes direction, that could change. The precipitation activity looks large, but not serious.

Hopefully there will be a nice crowd tonight
FYI, we are 13th overall in average park attendance. Not too bad. Should be going up in the next few weeks.
2nd FYI, just to kill the time before the game starts, my brewery is starting to expand. I’ll be making a mead in the next few days (fermented honey, also known as the nectar of the gods)
Most Excellent.
Can we have another Rowbot Meetup when the Mead’s ready? I would love to try some.
Well then,
There’s always winter league baseball in Mexico or somewhere :)

There is a meadery in Boulder

If you're local, you should go
The tour’s pretty interesting.

Doesn’t happen much though. I had one of their meads while I was in Tucson. It was incredible. Very close to a fine wine.
Awesome on both FYI's!:)

Hynick for JDLR
Maybe it’s premature, maybe JDLR is a better pitcher than he is right now but if find ourselves legally in a pennant race than perhaps we should trade or bench him in for Hynick from Colorado Springs or Josh Fogg.
JDLR just doesn’t seem to be able to get out of the big innings…and that is killing the Rockies.
Thoughts ,comments? Anyone, anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
DLR is starting tomorrow...
… and after that, we won’t need a fifth starter until July 1 against the Dodgers. Even if DLR blows tomorrow’s start, it may be a while before we learn if a change will be made in the rotation.

crazy biased, republican worshiping, Bush crushing, Obama hating, and the occasional ridiculous soft new story. I’ll give them that.
How many hours of news have you actually watched on Fox?
They are indeed a conservative station, but I feel people should get news from all sides of the spectrum, rather than just ignore part of it.
No ideology has the whole picture. You can only get it if you experience them all.

Please
Their coverage of Obama’s inauguration was mostly just Bush flying to Texas. Before Bama took over, they condoned any anti war protest, in fact, any protest in any form was evil to them. But they sure did love the tea part protest stuff.
I’ll watch something that isn’t so overly biased.
I believe your own bias exaggerates the bias of other things.
It’s called the “hostile media effect”, and most news viewers are subject to it.

how long is Tracy going to strick this guy. He can’t seem to hit a MLB Pitcher
He's being incredibly unlucky
He’s hitting line drives nearlt one third of the time, yet is only hitting .231 on batted balls. That’s ridiculously unlucky. If his BABip were league average , he’d be hitting about .300 right now

Ticket advice needed
I’m in Colorado for 6 days & haven’t been to Coors Field before.
Tomorrow’s Father’s Day & my wife says a Rockies game is my treat.
Don’t want to pay big bucks for box seats. What’t’s a reasonably-priced
location to sit in? Lower outfield (which I’m partial to — like to see the
ball coming toward us.
Watching the game tonight on TV at Oskar Blues in Lyon]s. One
helluva way to watch a Rockies game.

He gave up two hits
One was clobbered but inches from being an out. And Morgan would have been out if the IF wasn’t drawn in. He’s been solid this year. I won’t give up on him.

Oh i won't either...
just hard to see the young ones especially him fail. I don’t think he should have been put in that position either, Hammel should have been pulled earlier.

Tough call there...
…Tracy has shown he is more than willing to let pitchers deal themselves out of these kinds of situations. He’s lauded when it works but now we can see the downside. I’m split on this.

Yeah...
I would have definately pulled him after the two guys were on though. Perfectly setup for Flores and Daley…I believe it would have been a different outcome.

I’ll post a comment in whatever thread is up in the morning. Depends on whether wifey’s well enough to go or not. It’s Section 216, row 2 or 3 (forget which). I’d give it up for $20 if a Rowbot wants to use it. I’d hate to waste it.
