Denver running out of brooms as Rockies continue to sweep through June; beat Pirates 5-4

The Colorado Rockies completed their fourth series sweep out of six in the month of June after beating the Pirates 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. After starter Jorge De La Rosa gave up three runs in the first two innings, the Rockies stormed back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second, highlighted by back to back doubles from Clint Barmes and Ryan Spilborghs following a run scoring single from Dexter Fowler. The Rockies added one run in each of their next two frames with Barmes adding a solo home run in the fourth inning to cap the Rockies scoring, and then De La Rosa and the Rockies bullpen held on over the next five for the close win over Pittsburgh.

Tomorrow the Rockies visit Los Angeles to face the Angels as the team starts a critical nine game West Coast swing that if successful could help keep the momentum rolling all the way into the All Star break or stop it dead in its tracks.

I think my favorite part was Spilly

I Spilly’d Spilly, and i think it was a real resume booster for his trade value.

if you're reading this, it means my undying support for your team will result in its failure.

Who knows...

Maybe no one’s really on the block at this point.

I think Spilly,Atkins and Baker

are available for a bullpen arm. Murton can come up we have no place for Baker, and Ortmier can play first in the spot starts for Helton. If Corpas is out for any length of time we may need someone in the pen.

Murton sets the CSprings hit streak record

Looks like it was a good day for Murton in AAA. He hit in his 29th straight game, setting a Sky Sox record. I’m sure he’d rather be w/the Rockies, but at least he’s making the most of his time down there.

Hopefully they’ll keep him instead of trading him. Murton is going to be a good one.

Are you kidding me with this team

To review, the bridge to Huston Street consisted of Josh Fogg, Randy Flores, and Joel Peralta. You have to be joking. (Although it should be noted that I am officially enjoying Joel Peralta – that split/change is pretty nasty.)

This is really a lot of fun. I’m not even thinking about where we’ll be in a week, or a month, or by October. I’m just enjoying every day, and waking up every morning expecting a win. What a fun team.

The baseball Gods are with us

Things are just going our way. In my opinion, that would have been a big fat L had Sanchez caught that ball, however, I’m not complaining. It will be exciting to see what the Rox can do with a June Rocktober.

Just got back from the game...

Went with my dad, of course. The best comment of the day came after the bat hit the backstop in the 2nd inning, and my dad said “good thing that net’s there, otherwise someone would have a really bad case of batface.”

Without reading through the game thread comments, could someone tell me, what happened to Dexter in that pickoff attempt? Did he get stepped on or did the ball hit him? We were pretty high up, and I couldn’t tell.

At this point, I could really care less if we make the playoffs or end up in last place, it’s just really freaking fun to be a Rockies fan right now.

I too was at the game

It looked like the ball hit him in the shoulder and ricocheted away. Probably hit some soft tissue in that area. Does anyone with a TV/Radio have what really happened?

At the game with my kids

It was hotter than Hades out there. DLR looked OK. Not great, but not bad after the 2nd inning. Overall, it was slowwwww game. Seemed like the rhythm was off a bit. Sweet shot by Barmie. Spilly looked good; Atkins swing just looks off. Bullpen did exactly what they needed to do. Although I would have like to see Street well rested for the road trip. Angels will be tough, since they seemed to be getting healthy again.

I was at the game with jrockies, good times

Anyway, all I really came away with was how bad Hawpe looked against Maholm.

Of course, everyone knows Hawpe can’t hit lefties. At all.

(ducks for cover)

Naw, seriously, some folks really stepped up today, and we get to miss Lackey in the Angels series, so I like our chances of at least 4 of the 6 six on this road trip.

Well it's a 9 game

trip with 3 against the Angels,A’s and Dodgers but I get your point. With the off day in there I would almost consider skipping DLRs spot and just working him on the side. Now if pitchcounts are high that’s a different story.

Right now, the Dodgers scare me….we’d do good to take 1 of those 3

Was at the game...

and what really helped our karma was…no wave! Seriously—44k people and no wave. Progress is being made people!

And I was seated higher than the purple row right behind home plate (331), which was great because we were shaded the whole time. Sweet.

16 out of 17. Wrap your mind around that.

We were shaded all game also

Sec 129. Was nice to see big crowds but makes getting tickets tougher. This trip is really big and most in the media think we will fade here, 6-3 would be nice.

And to think i was hoping to get to .500 for the season when Tracy took over

by Roxfan24 on Jun 21, 2009 9:04 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha

i was thinking the same thing when Tracy first took over i was like “hmm .500 would be a GREAT accomplishment for this team by season’s end”

we seem to have gotten over that HURDLE

by TuLoRocks2008 on Jun 21, 2009 9:17 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, they tried to do the wave...

but it didn’t even go all the way around. If I remember right, it’s because McCutchen did something, well, McCutchen-ly at that point.

I personally am attributing the karma to the number 16. In addition to this being 16 of 17, It was also Street’s 16 save. I was in Section 326, row 16. Wrap your head around THAT.

by coolopotamus on Jun 21, 2009 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1 to the #16

I was also at the game and rejoiced that the wave died. Our only issue was a guy with a giant sombrero sitting in front of us and an elderly lady, who refused to take it off when asked nicely by multiple people and only did take it off much later with much attitude from him and his friend. Otherwise epic win and a blast was had by all.

Are you kidding about Spilly

You want to trade the farm, and more importantly the intangible needed to make it through an off season. It is not all about baby faces. Rockies need
Spilborghs. Trade from AAA we have more outfielders in the minors than could ever hope to make in the bigs on this team. Trade Miller, Murton or Ortmeier- those guys are stuck because management is in love with Fowler and Cargo

by indianrox on Jun 21, 2009 9:23 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

The thing is that we know there is demand out there for Spilly.

Probably not for those other guys. I think we have to face that Spilly is not part of our long term plans. Someone like Murton could fill-in for Spilly just as well. If we want another bullpen arm or some other area of need, we have to trade a spare part.

by holly96 on Jun 21, 2009 10:30 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree

There is more demand out there for Spilly, who has proved to be at least above AAAA status (although he may be better than that) than there is for someone like Miller, Murton or Ortmeier, who are either replacement parts or unknown quantities. Spilly’s ceiling combined with his age does not make him a commodity for the Rockies going forward. Falling in love with your own players who have either limited ceilings or windows of productivity (see: Cory Sullivan, Garrett Atkins) only hurts the system as a whole.

Management is in love with Fowler because he’s the real deal, and Cargo has a very high ceiling. I’m not sure how many out of the group named could have either said about them. The best thing about being the backup QB is that you’re always better than the starter.

Whoops, hit "post" too soon

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you BUT

Spilly is part of a chemistry THIS year that is very important for a post season run. I say keep him through this season. I am too excited about the prospects to want to mess with their chemistry right now. Hopefully he will prove of even more value after the seson is over

by indianrox on Jun 21, 2009 11:29 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not downplaying the importance of chemistry.

But I don’t think Spilly is necessarily as critical in that respect as you think he is. There are 25 guys on the roster, and you’re never going to have the exact same 25 guys all year long. I’m not convinced that changing out one guy is going to disrupt what the Rockies have going (unless that one guy’s on-the-field contributions are irreplaceable, and I don’t think Spilly’s are).

And I’m not convinced that his value will be much higher than it will be at this point, at a time when we know multiple teams are interested. That might not be the case after the season, once those teams have made other moves.

by holly96 on Jun 22, 2009 2:35 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on the offer...

I think who goes really depends on the offer. I think the reports on O’Dowd are right. He is probably waiting and not actively shopping (that is, he’s not calling guys up offering specific names, if he’s calling, he’s asking about the other team’s guys).

I don’t think Murton is quite a Spilly replacement as he doesn’t have as much versatility in the field. But he is good enough to make it possible to move Spilly, esp. if they feel Carlos can stick around.

I am downplaying the importance of chemistry...

winning makes great chemistry. That’s all that is going on, ergo the Rockies have great chemistry. I am NOT a fan of that cliche’.

Trade him if you can get a bullpen part—but if not, go ahead and keep him.

Well it's safe to say

We pretty much got the most out of our only home stand in June. It’s really good to see the Rox playing well at home. After the break when we (finally) get more games at home than elsewhere, this could be a big plus for our playoff hopes. This is another big road test coming up, but I think the Rox have finally hit their stride. I’m with Roxfan24 on this one – a 6-3 trip would be just awesome.

Oh, and how sweet was it to see that many people at the yard again. You’d think it was, well, you know….

And how far back are we now?

Some thoughts on the lineup in Cal/Ana/LA and Oakland

I’ve been hearing that Atkins will get a lot of at bats as DH during the Angels and A’s series. We should be facing a good number of righties, so why aren’t we talking about Smith in the lineup? He’s been tearing the cover off the ball.

Anyway, here’s my thoughts on how I would set up the lineup for tonight (if I were Jim Tracy, and I’m not, but here it goes anyway).

1. Fowler
2. Barmes
3. Helton
4. Hawpe
5. Smith
6. Tulowitzki
7. Stewart
8. Iannetta
9. Gonzalez

I might even consider switching Hawpe and Smith in the order to put a little more speed in the middle, but also to protect Hawpe with Tulo. There’s some nice power and speed at the top and bottom of the lineup as well, but I also think putting CarGo at the bottom of the lineup takes some of the pressure off of him and just focus on getting on base. It also leads to some interesting situations when he does get on base with Fowler at bat.

Discuss.

i would love to see that line up tonight

but unfort. i think we are going to see Outkins DH :(

we seem to have gotten over that HURDLE

by TuLoRocks2008 on Jun 22, 2009 8:40 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

True. But possibly a short leash

I can’t imagine that Tracy will let Atkins under-perform for too long. Plus, if he’s really looking optimize matchups, it seems to me that having an extra left-handed bat in the lineup (that would be 4 bats out of 5 in the top/middle of the lineup, and a total of 6 for the entire lineup) could wreak havoc.

by SoxRoxFan on Jun 22, 2009 8:50 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is probably the last real good chance to get Atkins a bunch of at bats before the trade deadline.

Let’s just hope he snaps out of his funk during this “showcase” period.

The problem is

that even if he is showcased, and if he performs well, his overall performance has been shoddy and there still won’t be any leverage for picking up any quality bullpen help – at least not by the trade deadline
