Game #74: Jorge de la Rosa vs. Trevor Cahill
Colorado Rockies at Oakland Athletics, Jun 27, 2009 7:05 PM MDT
It appears it will be more hot and muggy tonight than yesterday, so that may affect fly balls. A win tonight secures the Rockies 6th series win in the past 7. The pitching matchup gives Oakland a chance more than in any other game in the series though. Let's just hope good DLR shows up. If we win and Minnesota and Milwaukee do as well, we'll be within 0.5 games of the wild card, in second place.
vs.
Stat of the day: One starter in this game has a tRA and FIP of 5.70 and 5.00, while the other has 4.04 and 4.03. And they don't match who you'd think.

not only will the hot and muggy affect fly balls but
it will affect the breaking balls.

YES - PHILLIPS IN TONIGHT!
As my fanposts indicate – I’m totally digging this guy. I know it’s almost sacrilegious to naysay CDI on PR (Where John Kruk’s opinion means nothing and The Pride of Providence Rules) but all must admit he’s been struggling the last few outings (3 for 13 with zero RBIs & HRs in last 4 games). Not really meaning to knock the guy, just pumped to see Paul get his licks in tonight.
does he have any options left when Yorvy comes back?
"I've had pretty good success with Stan Musial by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third." - Carl Erskine
chances are probably not real high that he'll clear waivers
"I've had pretty good success with Stan Musial by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third." - Carl Erskine
That depends.
Are any teams actually looking for a backup catcher? Phillips’ career is nothing exciting; he’s been a journeyman catcher who happens to have been journeying with the same team over and over. Paul Phillips has been designated for assignment EIGHT TIMES in his career. He’s never been claimed off waivers.

But we do have Bellorin.

I'd rather DOD figure out a way to package Yorvy in a trade.
Would give a bit of salary relief.

We're stuck with Torrealba until the end of the year.
Then his option will be declined. If Phillips is still in the organization, he could be our backup full time next season.

Yep, you're probably right. Phillips makes a nice affordable backup tho.

let alone this game, so it’s hard for them to be optimistic to see a win at this point. Commentors at Athletics Nation are extremely apathetic as well

We had bad Jorge that inning so the tally is 2 innings of good Jorge 1 inning of Bad Jorge

I wouldn't say that was badJorge
Bad Jorge gives up five runs there, not two. He was locating, and got burned by one bad walk, lucky placement from Kennedy, and Suzuki fighting a good pitch.
Bad Jorge would have walked Holliday, given up a double to Garciaparra, then let Giambi hit it out. lol

When was the last time has hit 9 home runs, one in each inning of a game? (Not that I expect anyone to look that up.)

LOL at the Giants game
They scored two off Hoffman in the 9th to go up 6-4, then gave up three in the bottom of the inning to lose 7-6.
Too bad we don't really gain ground since we're chasing both those teams...
But as long as we keep winning against the A’s and they beat up each other, it works out alright.
Milwaukee can win a ton for all I care.
One of them or St. Louis needs to be at the top of the division. Milwaukee can win if they stay on top.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 27, 2009 8:44 PM MDT up reply actions
It's a bit of an issue when both Milwaukee and St. Louis are winning a ton
As both won today and have been doing pretty well since we swept them at the beginning of this run. One of them will have to lose more than the Rockies eventually.
But the Giants definitely will. As it stands now, only one of Milwaukee and St. Louis does.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 27, 2009 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions
It actually works best for the Rockies if both do.
I’m going to get into this more tomorrow with the Rockpile, but if the WC is the goal, the aim should be a better record than either the NL Central or NL East champion, if not both. WC winners almost always have a better record than one division winner.
It does work better if both do, as if we finished ahead of both of them, it won't matter who wins the division.
But one of the Brewers or Giants had to win tonight. The Brewers over the Giants is better.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 27, 2009 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions
I would actually argue the opposite...
Since the Rockies have more games remaining against the Giants, they can take care of San Fran themselves easier. If it comes down to a race with us and the Brewers, we would have to rely on help if Milwaukee’s still in front.
But we don't have any way of knowing if they will.
The Giants can suffer more damage at our hands, but all other things being equal, understanding that both teams neutrally have the same amount of opportunity to win and lose games, Giants still make more sense to me.
It doesn’t matter if we have the agency in the situation or not. We’re just another team that could win or lose to them. The Brewers have plenty of those too.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 27, 2009 8:58 PM MDT up reply actions
Agency plus a better team/more chance of winning does change things
I guess that’s the key part I left out of the San Fran scenario. Not only do the Rockies have more opportunity to gain ground on the Giants directly later in the season by virtue of the weighted schedule, they have a higher likelihood of it simply because San Francisco’s an inferior team to both Colorado and Milwaukee. There isn’t a neutral opportunity here, it’s a better opportunity of success chasing a weaker team than a stronger one.
I don't see how this matters,
Every game the Giants and Brewers play have a statistical chance of resulting in the same result – either a win or a loss. Just because they play US for more games doesn’t mean they should be considered less of a threat.
Let’s say we win every series from now on, except those to the Giants. We’re still in contention, but we’ve done absolutely nothing to shove the Giants off of us. Our agency against the Giants seemingly has no effect, because the Brewers could ALSO have the same situation happen to them with another team that they will be playing four more times. The difference is that the Brewers have a significant chance of leaving the competition entirely due to division lead. The Giants do not.
It sure seems to me that equal games, equal chance for win and loss based on talent and schedule, suggests that our agency means little to nothing, and is merely an illusion of our on control. Again, we may play the Giants more, but we have very little control over whether we beat them or not.
To me, a winning Brewers team that catapults out of the Wild Card altogether is the best case scenario, to a Brewers win is equivalent to the best scenario.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 27, 2009 9:09 PM MDT up reply actions

is the Dodgers Fall apart ala the 2007 Mets and the Rockies take the Division.

You're still saying "equal chance for win or loss"
When I’m saying that’s a false premise to start from. Because of their lack of offense, the Giants have the greatest chance of loss head to head against any of the other six primary competitors for the WC slot, including the Rockies. 2007 showed how a matchup advantage against certain teams can make up ground more quickly than a generic “all teams equal” scenario, but that’s not even the case here. The Giants are barely a .500 team. If they can expect to go .500 for the remaining 86 games this season (43-43) it’s of more benefit to the Rockies to be a game and a half behind them than it would be the Cardinals and Brewers who both can be expected to go over .500 for the remainder of the season. If the Cardinals are going 46-40 and the Brewers 45-41, it means that the Rockies have to go 47-39 to catch them. It’s doable, but it would be easier and more likely if the projected win number was 44 or 45 instead.
Second point is that neither the Brewers nor the Cardinals (or Cubs for that matter) have that significant chance of leaving the WC entirely because the more likely scenario has all three within a couple of games of the division crown and even if they’re not, the other two are still left to deal with. You can’t wish one ahead in this case, the best result for the Rockies is to instead lap all three.
If you go to BP’s Playoff Odds Report, at first glance you’d suspect that the Giants had the best chance of knocking out the Rockies for the WC, but that’s not true because the cumulative chances of those three NL Central teams outweighs San Francisco and suggests whoever winds up #2 in that division is the most likely to beat the Rockies for that playoff spot right now, it’s just so close that they all have about even odds of being that #2 Central team. Anytime any of those three teams wins, it makes the Rockies job of securing a playoff spot a little harder, not easier.
“the Giants have the greatest chance of loss head to head against any of the other six primary competitors for the WC slot, including the Rockies.”
And I’m saying that we can’t know that. You know I am a stat lover, but this is something that the stats can’t tell us. They can’t predict the future. As it stands, I am assuming every team that has hung into contention thus far has a similar chance to make it in. On one hand, that may sound naive; but I understand very well that these teams are not equal. The point I am making is that we can’t know for sure which teams are going to be the ones that surge ahead. Educated guesses are all we have. Not enough IMO.
“the more likely scenario has all three within a couple of games "
I still contend that doesn’t matter. One of those teams is guaranteed to “win out of the race”. The Giants will probably not. Therefore, the Giants vs. any of those teams, the Giants are again the preferable loss.
“If you go to BP’s Playoff Odds Report,”
Once again, stats and odds give us a lot, but they do not predict the future. Each of these teams is an MLB team within striking distance of the playoffs, and I am not going to give the Giants a pass because they have a different set of odds attached to them than elsewhere. I want the teams with the most likely chance of being an active participant in the race to be losing, and teams with the less likely chance of being an active participant in the race to be winning when they are matched up against one another.
We’re going to ahve to agree to disagree on this one.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 27, 2009 9:45 PM MDT up reply actions
I guess we are...
As long as you can’t see that there’s a predictive element to a team’s past performance, there will be no way to convince you. I just can’t understand how anybody can make that argument. We know that the Rays are a good team and are likely to win more games than they lose. We know that the Nationals are a bad team and are likely to lose more than they win. What you’re suggesting would imply that this isn’t the case, and that the Nats are as likely to win later this season than the Rays. While this is a different degree, it’s the same thing. The Giants, so long as they don’t make personnel changes (and this is where I’d agree with you that we can’t predict the future) are very unlikely to win as many games going forward as the Rockies, Cardinals, Brewers, Mets or Phillies. Stats do predict probabilities and outcomes, it’s the only way that Vegas would be able to make money on sports books, which guess what, they do.
One team is guaranteed to “win out of the race” in the Central, true, but you’re still acting as if the other teams don’t matter as much as that one team, when actually they do, and they matter more than the Giants, again though, if you’re ignoring probabilities, I’m not going to get anywhere here.
“We know that the Rays are a good team and are likely to win more games than they lose. We know that the Nationals are a bad team and are likely to lose more than they win.”
Yes, we do. Those two teams have had radically different first halves. I am talking about teams who have accomplished similar things in this time.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 8:16 AM MDT up reply actions
“One team is guaranteed to "win out of the race" in the Central, true, but you’re still acting as if the other teams don’t matter as much as that one team, when actually they do, and they matter more than the Giants”
Look, there’s no denying you understand the situation better than I do. But I’m no fool when it comes to logic, and I simply fail to see how this is logical. It sounds to me, if I understand your argument correctly, that you think these teams matter more than the Giants because A, they’re projected to be better teams, and B, because we play them less times.
I have to maintain that the fact that we play them more times is 100% irrelevant, because we are just another baseball team. It’s rather foolish, IMO, to assume that we WILL do more damage to the Giants just because we play them four times more than the Central teams through the rest of the season. The agency we have in this case is a complete illusion.
We’re talking about just this one game. Giants vs. Brewers. I am not advocating that I want those central teams to just keep winning (unless it is one who does, and takes a Dodger like lead. Otherwise, yes, let them lose.
But when they play the Giants, assuming that their similar performances to date are indicative of similar project5ed performance (which they are, even if you assume that the Giants are overperforming), the Giants are staying in the race, pretty much certainly. They’re far more dangerous, in my opinion.
