Game 75: Aaron Cook vs. Vin Mazzaro
Colorado Rockies at Oakland Athletics, Jun 28, 2009 2:05 PM MDT
With the Rockies' 11-9 win last night, coupled with a loss by San Francisco (and LA to boot), Colorado finds itself a mere game back in the wild card standings.
The Rockies look to complete the sweep of the Oakland Hollidays by sending out the red-hot, franchise-winningest pitcher Aaron Cook (7-3, 4.00) against 22 year-old Vin Mazzaro (2-2, 2.56). In the last month Cook is 4-1 with a 2.65 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, finding his groove mostly on the road.
Mazzaro meanwhile has been no slouch either--having his first five MLB starts this month, he's more than held his own. He sports a 2.97 FIP, so the ERA isn't too much of a mirage, though his BABIP is .265, which should receive a course correction soon. Here's Dave Cameron on Mazzaro.

The battle of the sinkers.
And therefore, the battle of the defenses.
Interesting that they selected Mazarro but not Cook to be part of their study.

they do have Mark Ellis back at second
who is arguably the best defensively at the position in the majors, but yeah, Cabrera has been poor at short THIS year, and Kennedy is unknown at third but looked uncomfortable on the one ball he got there yesterday from Atty
And don't forget Cust in RF. If he's playing today.

He is. They need his bat in the lineup. or at least feel like they do.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:29 PM MDT up reply actions
They're not terrible defensively
Sweeney is solid as is Holliday in OF. Cabrera doesn’t have the range but can still pick it. They’ve allowed the fewest SB in the majors by far. They do make a lot of errors but have decent collective range

Sweeney is not in the league of Fowler or Gonzalez in center field
Holliday is a bang average left fielder, I take all three of our outfielders over theirs (this is probably the only right fielder in baseball I’d say that for!). On the infield, I’d say we were comfortably better at three of the four positions, and Suzuki and Ianetta is a close call
Ahem, according to THT..
Holliday has been one of the best defensive LF over the past few years.

OK fair enough
still a no brainer on Gonzalez though
Gonzalez is good..
Did you see his throw in Anaheim on Tuesday? Gunned the man down at 2b before he could even slide!

I find it odd that both Cust and Giambi are in the lineup
and neither is the DH
hmmm, I'd imagine it's just so he doesn't have to wear the gear again but gets at bats
I would hope this never translates to the Rox though, unless they’re contriving a way to keep Phillips around.
I guess that makes sense. He has caught four games in a row.
I think it would have made more sense for them to put him at 1B in the middle of the rehab, though, not at the end.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:21 PM MDT up reply actions
We're facing Brian Lawrence, former Rockie starter hopeful.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:24 PM MDT up reply actions
So is there a time limit when we have to activate him? Or can we wait until we want to?
And Phillips will be DFA?
"I've had pretty good success with Stan Musial by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third." - Carl Erskine
He was only allowed 5 rehab games.
He needs to come back right away. It will be Phillips who is designated for assignment unless they want to carry 3 catchers for some reason.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:28 PM MDT up reply actions
hopefully he sneaks through, he's been more than we could have expected as the backup
I don’t see it though, I think another team picks him up on waivers, if it wasn’t for Yorvit’s contract I think I’d prefer to keep him around
Phillips has been designated for assignment eight times in his career.
He’s never once been claimed. Why does everybody assume some other team wants Phillips on their roster?
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:31 PM MDT up reply actions
Because he's been hella good on this round
I like him a lot
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Jun 28, 2009 1:32 PM MDT up reply actions
He has.
But is any team that desperate for catchers? If he’s claimed, he has to be added to the roster immediately.
I don’t deny it is possible, but it seems like a stretch.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:33 PM MDT up reply actions
Yes.
I know Philly has issues. I can’t remember Milwaukee’s situation.
The question is, will they choose to pull the trigger on Phillips? Like I said, I don’t deny that it’s possible, but if I were in their situation, I wouldn’t be looking at Phillips half as well as I am as a Rockies fan.
I think there is a very significant chance he clears, though nowhere close to a guarantee. The fairest way to put it is that it could go either way.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 2:05 PM MDT up reply actions
During BP in Anaheim Phillips would...

He had elbow problems last year, and is somewhat expensive
If he stays off the DL, he will be paid $6-7.5M this year.

yeah, agree
I wonder what the market for relievers will be like? Seems like most teams are looking for them.
Free Seth Smith!
And in addition, very few teams are looking to be sellers this season.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:54 PM MDT up reply actions
that will change in three-four weeks time though
but the whole NL is pretty congested, the NL central is a logjam
It will, but you may be surprised how stubborn some of the teams are.
So many GMs are refusing to give away their players this season at all, or at least claiming to. Last season, there were rleady teams at this point showing off players and hyping up their willingness to trade. Not this time.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:59 PM MDT up reply actions
And I agree LaTroy wouldn't be a bad idea.
He’s had a good year, and he wasn’t that bad with us. He just rots in the minds of Rockies fans because of his awful start. He was 0-3 in this first two weeks with us.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:41 PM MDT up reply actions
He has a straight fastball, but it hits mid-high 90's..
and a decent curve. So he would be good for spot situations in the bullpen.

Saito is a big danger to break down though
I’d prefer LaTroy to be honest, I don’t think we’d have to give up as much to get him, plus I think the Astros are pretty bad at trading!
Isn't that Renck's opinion?
Sounded like Renck was throwing out names he thinks the Rockies should go for:
Here’s a name that makes perfect sense for the Rockies’ bullpen…If Houston dives in the standings, Colorado should aggressively pursue him. . . . Another reliever who could help tremendously is Takashi Saito
Free Seth Smith!
Yes.
I said he thinks “they may choose” to go after them, not “they’re going after them.”
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:50 PM MDT up reply actions
Was he saying the Rockies are going to be buyers at the trade deadline?
Because that would be sweet. Haven’t picked up a pitcher like that since Saberhagen.
Check out my Rockies comic strip at:
Rock Drive 1.4
Putting it in terms of "buyers and sellers" is still hot stove talk IMO.
If the Rockies ar ein contention, they will be looking for a reliever, and probably nothing else. In addition, they’ll be selling Spilborghs and Atkins unless something changes.
Stewart’s recent slump and Atkins’ recent hotness may constitute “something”. We’ll see.
Point being, it’s too early, and too complex of a situation to put such a label on us.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 28, 2009 1:57 PM MDT up reply actions
Right, and sounds like most of the teams are in that situation
most are waiting a little while to see how things shake out.
Free Seth Smith!
It's not just hot stove talk...
There’s always buyers and sellers when it comes to being in the playoff races. If a team is completely out of contention, I’m looking at you San Diego, then trade away expensive pieces for prospects. etc.

I saw that, and was just noting
that if the Astros had climbed back into contention, then they’d have
been hard-pressed to trade their veteran relievers. They almost
swept the Tigers this weekend — they were one strike away — but
Valverde took care of that. Valverde & a fan who pulled a Bartman
& reached over the railing on a double down the 3B line to cost
the Astros a run — runner was sent back from the dugout to 3B &
never scored. Helluva way to lose.
No records in the last 10 years should count.

I have had some discussion
over who should play Cargo or others. And I have contended that his defense save runs, so they should keep playing him.
Defense isn't overrated
the only question is if his stellar defense makes up for what had been a terrible bat when Smith and Spilborghs are plus bats in the OF. Until the weekend, it didn’t appear so

For the series or the season?
By WPA in the series:
Holliday: 0.033
Street: 0.258
CarGo: 0.142
That doesn’t include defense.
Season by WAR:
Holliday: 2.1
Street: 0.5
CarGo: -0.2
