Rockies Review: A Dream Deferred

Colorado Rockies as Pretenders: 18-28.

Colorado Rockies as Contenders: 40-35

So, contenders for what?

The Wild Card, obviously. But the Dodgers' lead in the West continues to dwindle, too.

Yet, as we all know by now, John Kruk wrote a piece this week that cast the Rockies as pretenders, a team that wouldn't compete for the Wild Card. We discussed that ad nauseum here specifically and throughout the week everywhere else on the site. So much so that Kruk is now a four-letter word here and makes an appearance in the banner. What this really comes down to is that commentators want the Rockies to defer their dreams of that ultimate victory.

Langston Hughes wrote the following words on a more serious matter, but give it a read:

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Source

Or does it explode? Now, haven't we seen a dream deferred explode once before with the Rockies? Maybe it's time to take that leap and stop telling the Rockies to defer their dreams, because not taking that leap might just explode in your face.

Coming next week, the return of Silverblood to Rockies Review.

/waits for Rox Girl's lengthy piece on playoff contenders "this afternoon."

I love Langston Hughes

and the “dream deferred” metaphor is an apt one. Seems to me that our Rox had their dream deferred in 2007. Despite what some krukin’ commentators would like, I have a vague notion that they (the commentators) might be disappointed this year. Just sayin’. I’m loving this team right now. (Well, with the exception of the obvious culprits.)

And how far back are we now?

I just didn’t want to throw the first dagger their way. Thank you for handling that for me. ;-)

Yeah... me too...

The piece definitely got too lengthy as far as the research required for a relatively small payout. It’s pretty much done now, I just need to add some bells and whistles to break up the walls of text. I could give you a short version in the meantime:

Rockies need to win gamez. Lots of gamez.

Mets

Well, let’s at least hope we leave the Mets in the dust. Wow, they are stinking it up lately.

ESPN had ‘em on tonight. Mets were down 3-2 at home to the Yankees, so they put in K-Rod in the 9th to hold the 1 run deficit. 2 outs, runners on 1st and 2nd (one reached on a botched infield popup—ball fell between the SS and 2B in shallow center). Jeter’s up, Mariano Rivera is on deck. Yet the Mets have K-Rod throw a couple pitches to Jeter. With the count 2-1, they decide to walk Jeter afterall and load the bases so they can pitch to Rivera, who the announcers say has 2 AB’s lifetime. K-Rod then walks Rivera to make it 4-2.

Rivera would have likely held the lead anyway, and did hold the 4-2 lead, but sheesh.

here's hoping Silverblood returns to do a review of a streak that has reached 9 in a row.

Poem center-alignment

Does that happen automatically? Just curious… It looks funny. Am I the only poetry person who reads this blog? Center-alignment looks a little funny, right?

Anyway, great stuff, as always.
