I'm in my official "Don't get your hopes up and expect too much" mood.
Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?

Tulo's out with a hand injury.
So it’s not too surprising that there’s some minor shuffling.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
If Atkins
is going to be playing third, where will Stewart ever play?

right..
just thought he was going to use Q, and keep Barmes where he was. I’m new here so I hope I’m not asking dumb questions, but which position is more vital… 2B or SS ?
Well
the SS is usually considered the captain of the infield.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
more vital? I think pretty equally
exept if you want to consider that fact that there’s generally more right handed hitters, which means that the SS will generally get more balls towards him.
It's been a very long 24 hours. I'm ready to redeem ourselves.
Though I’m with Pedalpusher: I want it, but I’m not expecting it.
yep i think

Gorkys Hernandez, Jeff Locke, and Charlie Morton.
Gorkys = Andrew McCutcheon, Morton =#4 or #5 and Locke is not close but could be a #3 maybe.

Really
I think that was the whole point from the Pirates’ perspective. McCutchen, if he isn’t ready, is close, and the Pirates needed to make room for him. It only makes sense to trade the guy with the highest trade value.
exactly

It's not a terrible haul
Morton will probably immediately be up as he was pitching well at AAA. Hernandez has potential but hasn’t developed a power stroke (yet). Locke is your typical low-minors pitching prospect with good stuff but spotty command.
Pirates fans
like Rockies fans, are probably used to pain, and lots of it.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Win dammit

Just win, baby.

Braves also cut Glavine.
"Don't tell me about the world. Not today. It's springtime and they're knocking baseballs around fields where the grass is damp and green in the morning and the kids are trying to hit the curve ball." -Pete Hamill
And Glavine.
The left-hander is not happy about the Braves’ decision.
“He wants to pitch. He feels great,” his agent, Gregg Clifton, told Olney. “He’s still shocked about being released by a team he’s been a member of, and he’s not prepared to retire. He looks forward to pitching again in 2009.”
Glavine met with Braves general manager Frank Wren, John Schuerholz, and manager Bobby Cox. Glavine was told his velocity is down, and the executives suggested to Glavine that he could retire. But Glavine intends to pitch again.

P.S.
an out is where you don’t let your opponent (Generally called the batter) get on base or score. There are several ways to do this, including striking them out (3 strikes), or having them hit it so it pops up.

You think
we should program a virus to steal the decimal points off all the transactions that the Rockies make, and then use the money to sign Stephen Strasburg?
This seems to assume there's value in the transactions that the Rockies make.
Maybe we can get Kip Well’s contract back.

Speier's rehab has been a disaster.
They force him to completely redesign his delivery, and now he’s hurt again. If I were him, I’d probably be pretty angry.
They just said he injured his arm
after pitching his time out, and now there is a “?” next to his name.

The've been working on Speier's delivery since ST.
It was largely ineffective, and they told him to go back to his regular form. it got worse, and he got hurt, and went on the DL.
Once he got better, they sent him to Modesto, where the plan was to try tp convert him to a pure sidearm pitcher instead of a lower third. They’d send him up the ranks and he’d rejoin the team after success at AAA.
Well, he got hit at Modesto, got hit at Tulsa, got hit at Colorado Springs, and now… he’s reporting that his arm is bothering him, so he’s been shut down.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 3, 2009 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions
Yes.
I’m not entirely sure how the rules work there (if he gets another 30 days, or a reduced time), but yeah, MLB can’t disallow a pitcher who rehurts himself during rehab to not go back for more.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 3, 2009 6:55 PM MDT up reply actions
I wonder if there is any chance of shenanigans here, then, to allow more time to work on his delivery
Or is that too tinfoil hat-ish?
I think it is too tinfoil.
They want Speier back to form and back in our pen. I hope after this they just let him do his thing though. it seems likely that whatever they’re doing to him is causing him distress, and is possibly the cause of both injuries.

catchable, sure
but a big league player should easly put that throw on the numbers, especially when throwing to a pitcher covering. E could go either way, but a good throw solves everyone’s problems.

That's about as good of a throw I think you can expect from a second baseman in that position.
I see it as Peralta’s goof all the way.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 3, 2009 8:24 PM MDT up reply actions
you must have
pretty low expectations for our players, I guess you’ve been watching a lot of Rockies baseball this year. I’m sure Barmes would tell you that the throw was poor. This ain’t little league, a throw like that is hardly uncommon, pretty much every double play ball is similar. Sure, Peralta should have caught it, but how many plays at first do you think he’s had this year?
And really, who cares who gets assigned an error? Just another bad play from a bad team. Ugh, sorry, I’m done being negative. Rally.
Was it a perfect throw? No.
When you have a runner barreling at you, no player yet on the bag, and less than half a second to get it to the spot, you’re not going to throw a perfect throw every time. I don’t care if you’re the best defensive 2B to ever play the game, it’s not happening. It’s up to the player catching the ball. It didn’t even touch the ground.

I don’t care if he can’t make a “perfect” throw every time, just would have liked a decent throw that time.
I would argue it was a decent throw.
How often do you see players throw balls that don’t even make it to the first baseman before hitting the ground? Probably at least a quarter of the time. Good 1Bs like Helton make it look better because they fish them out.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 3, 2009 8:32 PM MDT up reply actions
I agree with that being a decent throw
but players throw the ball in the dirt a lot less frequent than 1/4.

I wasn't including routine plays.
Only speaking of plays where there is no player already on the bag.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 3, 2009 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions
of course they do
and if we’d have had Helton on the bag, I would feel differently. However, I’d be surprised if Peralta has fielded a throw at first all year. Part of “winning” baseball is making the game easier for your teammates. Barmes did the opposite, with predictable results.
In short, the Rockies are terrible this year, and you can point to a lot of macro level reasons why, but on a game by game basis, its stuff like this that will keep us on the bottom.
I'm confused.
Are you suggesting we don’t even bother to discuss the “micro reasons?”
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 3, 2009 8:36 PM MDT up reply actions
actually the opposite
i’m arguing that Barmes’ throw (or, Peralta’s no-catch, or both) ARE the micro-reasons that we suck. We can talk all day about lineup consistency or Atkins or whatever, but at the end of the day games are won and lost by players making plays, and we don’t make enough.
Ah. Then we are really in agreement.
Plus, when it comes to lineup consistency, I think when you have a good team, it doesn’t matter in the slightest.,

he's already the best CF the Rockies have had in years
not sure why you’d send him down
Thats not saying much
but I love his potential and I think he is a stellar defensive CFer already, but needs some work on his bat, and maybe a less pressurized situation would help. Gonzalez may be a big offensive improvement and defensively he is just a small notch below Fowler.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Or he may repeat his 2008 and be a downgrade from Fowler.

Why wouldn't a guy thats young have a chance for improvement
it seems like we are basing this on a short stint in the majors, he has had other very good numbers and has done all he can do this year to prove he belongs, why not another shot.
This team is going nowhere fast lets see what we have in a few of our players
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
naw, might as well let him learn on the job
more time tearing up AAA isn’t going to do anything for him. He’s a young dude, a rookie and needs major league at-bats. No reason to baby him especially when this team isn’t going anywhere anyway.
If you are talking about Fowler, he hasn't spent a single day in AAA
so how has he torn up AAA?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
No I guess I don't, because I think he could use some time in AAA
he has yet to play a game at that level, he looks overmatched right now, and at AAA he could get his AB’s and get some coaching and fine tune some things w/out having the pressure of a big league game. And as someone wrote earlier he would be called right back up as soon as we find a taker for Hawpe, which most likely would be in 3-4 weeks.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Buchholz in the 8th would be nice too

no hitter looks very possible
wonder if any sportsbooks offer odds on that kind of stuff? I’m sure it wouldn’t be worse that 30:1 and I’d say it’s closer to a 5:1 shot at worst.
This team is brutal to watch
Does anyone know what the worst offensive year in the history of Major League Baseball is with say a minimum of 300 plate appearances? Atkins has to be on pace to break whatever it is. I know I am beating a dead horse but he is murdering us in the lineup and it is disgusting to watch. I know he has been on a slight decline for awhile now but it is inexplicable how he became this putrid seemingly overnight.
Hurdle haters got what they wanted. He was far from a good manager but even further from the real problems that plague the Rockies. This season has been miserable.
/ obviously beyond frustrated.
Nah
They’ve been playing baseball a long time, thus, many chances at horrid seasons with 300+ PA.
I don’t think it’s particularly close. I don’t subscribe to bb-ref’s PI, but anyone can run a query; Atkins was at an OPS+ of 40 entering the game. Search for people with 38+ or worse, 300+ PA’s, I get Homer Bush in 2000 as the most recent, and he’s one of 60 query hits.
I wonder if Tracy got a mandate from O'Dowd to play Stew tonight
because he seemed pretty set on Q in the post game last night. He also seems to be very high on Q overall, and then goes and changes things up tonight. I was happy about it because I have not fallen off the Stew bandwagon, but just wondering if there are any other thoughts on this.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
If Tracy wants to play Q over Stew
I sincerely hope DOD (who I think is terrible) makes all the decisons. I have a strong suspicion that the grass is very much not greener with Tracy in charge.
