Game #77: Jason Marquis vs. Chad Billingsley

Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers, Jun 30, 2009 8:10 PM MDT

theoldgrizzlybear wrote this for an earlier version of the game thread:

The Rockies (40-36, 1.5 GB of San Francisco for the Wildcard) will try to improve on their 1-9 record in games against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Chavez Ravine. After last night's heartbreaking loss, the Rockies really need to get the bats going in an effort to avoid using bullpen arms tonight. They've faced Chad Billingsley once so far this season, scoring three runs off of him in 6 innings, while striking out six times in a loss.

Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.

by RdRnnr on Jun 30, 2009 8:41 PM MDT up reply actions

Last year was a weak year.

But when you see 250 movies, you find a lot of them stronger than Benjamin Button. Too bad too, because I really like Fincher.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 8:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Of the Academy nominees, I was probably most disappointed with The Reader

Button’s probably second on that list. Of movies that everybody else seemed to be in love with, The Dark Knight was easily most disappointing to me. Incredibly shallow script, even for a comic book movie, and I have no idea where Christian Bale’s ability to act went.

by Rox Girl on Jun 30, 2009 8:43 PM MDT up reply actions

It's funny you say that.

The Reader was my favorite film of last year. :D

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 8:44 PM MDT up reply actions

I really enjoyed

the Reader. Not a great movie, but vastly more engaging than Button to me. Agree with the sentiment above on Button, that it had interesting ideas that were never really touched. The whole time, I thought “this dude lives backwards but doesn’t really seem to mess his life up that much.”

by Teekalong on Jun 30, 2009 8:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Nor does it seem all that interesting to anyone else.

If I met someone who aged backwards, I’d probably be a heck of a lot more fascinated with them than anyone was in the film.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

exactly

though the submarine scene was cool, if only because it came from out of nowhere. cool cinematography, at least.

by Teekalong on Jun 30, 2009 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

It's got some of the same problems you're seeing in Button

Which I agree with. It really avoids the real tricky issues the story should be bringing up and when you’re dealing with war crimes, that’s a pretty glaring omission. The audience was separated to far from the real victims of that story in an effort to make Kate Winslet more sympathetic.

by Rox Girl on Jun 30, 2009 8:57 PM MDT up reply actions

She was sympathetic only to the extent she was loving to Michael.

I would argue The Reader wasn’t about the issues like the Holocaust or fascism, and therefore was under no obligation to flaunt them.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 8:59 PM MDT up reply actions

It didn't need to flaunt them.

It did need to explore why the central character, Michael, though was for all intents and purposes oblivious to why the woman he loved was actually on trial. Instead it was somehow made almost to be a trial of personal betrayal. The story makes him a victim, it makes her a victim because she’s illiterate and it winds up for all equating these little crimes of the heart with Auschwitz. To me that’s a pretty egregious mistake of narrative.

by Rox Girl on Jun 30, 2009 9:09 PM MDT up reply actions

You're looking at it through apathy theory, which I generally tend to avoid unless I am performing a specific reading with it.

I would say that the lack of exploration there left no hole for me. The “trial of personal betrayal” was exactly enough to emotionally involve me to the point where it became the most emotional experience I had at the cinema last year.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 9:14 PM MDT up reply actions

not really the apathy theory...

This was just the start of my issues. I suppose its a matter of if you find the two central characters sympathetic at all, you’ll be drawn into it, but if you don’t the movie’s gone from the beginning, which it was in my case.

by Rox Girl on Jun 30, 2009 9:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Performing a reading of a film studying the portrayals of the characters as victims would be apathy theory

Unless you’re looking at it in a different, more identity base situation such as feminist theory or queer theory, but performing either of those readings on The Reader would be next to impossible.

Wow… talking about reading The Reader is messing with my brains.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 9:32 PM MDT up reply actions

And The Dark Knight was my #8.

Interesting

I really liked Nos 1, 2, 4, 8. Yet to see 6, 7, 9 (9 is currently on tivo). I thought VCB was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in years. Painfully bad. F/N was interesting but I didn’t think it was that great of a film, better suited for documentary IMO. Rev Road for me was awesome until the 2nd scene with the “disturbed” kid, which I thought was a horrifyingly lame scene that ruined the movie for me.

by Teekalong on Jun 30, 2009 8:59 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh man, Michael Shannon's character was AWESOME.

I am sad you didn’t like him.

There are many documentaries on the Frost interviews if you’re more interested in those. Check some out!

The thing which annoyed me the most about Revolutionary Road was the ending, which disappointed me in going just a twinge too far into the melodrama, but nothing that made the rest of the film any cheaper.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 9:01 PM MDT up reply actions

I thought

he was great in the first scene, but [spoiler] I thought his 2nd scene was an obvious contrivance to draw out the subtle drama that had been building. It was wholly unnecessary (and unrealistic). His acting was very good, I just hated the blunt instrument they turned him into. The movie was playing perfectly below the surface, and he came in like a tornado to rip everything up.

by Teekalong on Jun 30, 2009 9:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Well, you're right, that's exactly what it was.

But I found it to be awesome anyway, as you don’t see such blatant, bitter antagonism in characters like that.

I kind of empathized with it, as I am also a social pariah at family events because I hate them. lol

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 9:08 PM MDT up reply actions

melodrama

is the right word for the entire last act, after the first 2/3 admirably avoided it.

by Teekalong on Jun 30, 2009 9:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Melodrama is not always a bad thing.

Only when it becomes palpable and impedes access to the story, which the very ending with the spoilers self inflicted abortion did.

The ending could have been equally as horrifying and disapproving of suburban life without all that jazz.

by Greg Stanwood on Jun 30, 2009 9:09 PM MDT up reply actions

agree

but by then, I was lost, so it didn’t bug me as much. One of those movies that was “so close and yet so far”.

He's really been very, very good this season

outside of a few shaky starts at Security Service Field.

Yeah I know...

…which makes me happy, because he’s been terrific on the road.

I was there for the perfecto

and it was 1 of the more impressive things I have seen in CS. His offspeed stuff was very good and he had great command tonight. Nothing harder than 91, but mostly worked at 88-89. EYJ made a great play in the 7th to keep it in tact, pretty awesome stuff.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

He was very good and has incredible command

but if you are looking for a guy w/ dominating stuff he doesn’t have that. He has performed at every level though, and I am pleasantly surprised at how well he has performed at altitude in the last month or so.

Be sure to have him in Los Angeles

before tomorrow’s day game!
