The question, then, is how much playing time CarGo will receive. It isn't much of a reward to be called up by the Rockies and spend the time sitting on the bench.

Since this is a bit like a circus, a master juggler is just what we need.

Reign

Can one “make it reign” as they would “make it rain?” I was modestly hoping for a breakout performance from Carlos Gonzales (and maybe a slumpbuster from Atkins), not necessarily extended run of terrorizing 1790s France the league.

I'll go here

and not the fan post as I’m late to the party.

What the hell? Ok I understand Carlos Gonzo is tearing it up in AAA. I understand it’s time to promote him. And he will play where exactly? Split time in CF with Fowler (Fowler’s left handed swing is getting worse, not better). This really makes no sense to me. There are too many OF’ers, and there is no way they can all stay sharp and get regular playing time. And with young guys like Fowler, CarGo, and Dixie Smith, they need regular playing time.

This could have waited until Hawpe was traded.

Speaking of trades and playing time. Both Atkins and Stewart need to play everyday too. One needs to go down. The Rockies have too many bodies, and not enough producers that are earning/controlling their playing time.

Trade/cut Atkins, play Stewart everyday, fix Tulo, promote EY2, Trade Hawpe, Promote some of the young pitchers to at least the pen if not the rotation. (oh, and FIRE DINGER!)

2010 STARTS NOW!

by Redhawk on Jun 5, 2009 9:45 AM MDT reply actions

To me the most important issue...

is whether his nickname is CarGo or CarGon….I kind of lean towards the latter although Ringolsby called him “Cargo” today. I think A’s fans called him CarGon back in the day.

Really people, we need nickname clarity, its very important.

Also I’m not worried about playing time, there will be a trade and it will settle out. The point is that Fowler is holding his own, and since we are already playing for 2010 I see no reason not to blood CarGo as well.

by moomacher on Jun 5, 2009 10:02 AM MDT reply actions

I prefer CarGon

But people will know to whom you’re referring either way.

by FooMan on Jun 5, 2009 10:07 AM MDT up reply actions

He'll always be Cargo to me.

But players can have several nicknames. Several Rockies already do.

Atkins HRs

Did anyone see the pitches that led to the Atkins homers? Were they signs of returning skills (ie, were the pitches fastballs with movement, or a tight breaking ball)? Or, were they just mistakes?

by deacs on Jun 5, 2009 11:14 AM MDT reply actions

Even if they were the latter, at least he hit them.

I’m positive he’s had other mistake pitches lately that he didn’t do that to.

Either way, though, he needs to use this as a step in the right direction and not just a blip in the radar.

DLR

If DLR doesn’t turn it around, and Morales comes back, I wonder if DLR would be moved to the ’pen to make room in the rotation.

by FooMan on Jun 5, 2009 12:05 PM MDT reply actions

I like that idea....sorta

JDLR has great stuff, but can’t seem able to string together good innings, and I like the idea of his arm in the pen where he wouldn’t need to string together too many good innings.

the DOWN side to this idea, is DeLa Rosa hates pitching out of the stretch (it’s where he gets in trouble and melts down) which would be an issue coming out of the pen.

by Redhawk on Jun 5, 2009 12:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Options

Well, the other options would be: releasing him, trading him, or keeping him in the rotation and either keeping Morales in the Springs, or pulling Hammel from the rotation.

DLR doesn’t have a huge career split between pitching with runners on and bases empty situations (20 pts of OPS in favor of bases empty). If the team doesn’t think he can develop consistency as a starter, I’d prefer the pen to the other choices, though I’m assuming he wouldn’t draw much trade interest. (I probably shouldn’t assume that.)

by FooMan on Jun 5, 2009 1:00 PM MDT up reply actions

a lefty that can

rack up strikes and can throw in the mid 90’s will ALWAYS have a job and be in demand. In fact I would assume that Trading him or releasing him would not be options to even consider from the Rockies side. So that pretty much leaves starter or reliever.

I think the Closer is the most over rated position on a pitching staff…but on the same hand I think 6th starter/long reliever to be the most UNDER rated role. If JDLR can do it then I think the team would get much better.

Also making the team better would be Hammel pitching at least mediocre in Denver.

we're on board the bullpen issues together

it’s always the worst, most hittable guy being thrown as the “cleanup” guy, and that’s not really a good thing.

Boy Howdy. You’ve got that one right. Closer gets way more credit than he should for 3 outs of work.

There's no good reason NOT to start him

He has destructive K potential, and he’s put up some solid outings with 6+ innings and high K totals.

He’s doing more things right than wrong. He stays in my rotation for the time being.

One thing that really stands out to me about Gonzalez

is that he’s really improved his plate discipline this year. Even in the minors, in previous years, he’s been somewhat of a hacker. His K-rate has dropped to 16.7% w/ the Sky Sox and walk rate increased to 10.3% (career high at any level he had >100 PAs at = 6.9%)

Smith-Fowler-CarGon , if the latter two get even close to their ceilings, is a sick OF for years to come. And hopefully, that’s the starting OF soon.
