Game #55: Aaron Cook vs. Todd Wellemeyer
Colorado Rockies at St. Louis Cardinals, Jun 6, 2009 5:15 PM MDT
Today will be Carlos Gonzalez' starting debut with the Rockies - clearly the storyline of the game. I'm sure we all know about CarGo, but if you are curious, FakeTeams has compiled several scouting reports on tonight's center fielder.
vs.
Seems the Rockies have the pitching advantage and the better offense.
Go Rockies!

The Cardinals optioned down Jess Todd after yesterday's game.
He has been replaced by Blake Hawksworth.
It's gonna be interesting seeing CarGo get his first start!!!
I just hope we didn’t use up all of our Runs allowed for this series yesterday.
I just don't want to see
that first pitch, ground-out to 2nd stuff anymore.

Any word on when Tulo will be back?
I thought he was going to be ready by the weekend
The swelling has gone down some, but they're gonna play it safe
I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t play him till the Brewers series, just to be sure.
Renck said he's getting a rest day
I suppose Stewart has filled in decently and there’s no need to rush him.

Though, honestly, if he plays like he has been, I don’t see any reason to be excited for his return.

Or you could go to the game, and do the Fantasy Broadcast Booth for an inning. You even get to keep a CD! :-)
Broadcasting from the game would be difficult, and poor quality.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Jun 6, 2009 5:35 PM MDT up reply actions
He, as a former "pitcher", felt that in a blowout, you should just toss fastballs down the middle instead of toss tricky pitches.
It reminds of Steve Kline’s whining a while back when Torrealba scored during a blowout, damaging his ERA, even though there was no way the Rockies were going to win (it was like 13-1)
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 6, 2009 5:36 PM MDT up reply actions
What he said
He was yapping at DLR after each pitch, which was a breaking pitch. He then hit a double off a slider and yelled at DLR the entire time running the bases. It really is just stupid. It’s like getting pissed off at a hitter for fouling off good pitches in a blowout in an attempt to get a good one and notch a hit.
There is no situation where a player should be expected to “take it easy” on an opponent. Pitchers are paid to get outs. Hitters are paid to get on base.

Helton gets a walk
Just seen Fowler is leading the club with 25 walks, promising stuff
he also leads the club in K's
with 44, less promising
He's had a lot of AB's...more than anyone but Helton and Atkins
Smith, Iannetta, Q, Phillips and Bellorin have better BB%
He’s 10th on the team in BB/K

I’m not greatly concerned with the K’s. The guy skipped AAA altogether. You’d expect him to have difficulty with K’s to start. Phillips, Bellorin and Q are fluky with their BB% due to low ABs. So really, he’s only beat out by Smith and Iannetta, who are elite hitters in terms of walks. Your point is a good one…it’s really good to see a young hitter getting walks out of the leadoff hole

Random topic: Longest Homerun
In order to fully understand and appreciate long-distance hitting, a frame of reference should be established. Any drive over 400 feet is noteworthy. A blow of 450 feet shows exceptional power, as the majority of major league players are unable to hit a ball that far. Anything in the 500-foot range is genuinely historic. For perspective, consider the computerized measuring system implemented by IBM in most major league cities in 1982. By 1995, the sponsorship had changed, but the program had been expanded to include every big league ballpark. During those years, only one drive of 500 feet was confirmed by this system. Cecil Fielder of the Detroit Tigers is credited with powering a ball 502 feet in the air over the left-field bleachers at Milwaukee’s County Stadium on September 14, 1991. Such renowned sluggers and extraordinary physical specimens as Jose Canseco and Juan Gonzalez have never come genuinely close to the 500-foot threshold. The best effort on the part of either player was Canseco’s famous blast into the fifth level at Toronto’s Sky Dome during the 1989 American League playoffs, which was estimated at 484 feet.

that it’s so refreshing to hear that much genuine excitement from Drew Goodman. If Stewie can make him do that, then I’m all for keeping him around :) . That’s twice tonight that Goodman’s actually been yelling out loud in the booth.

I love it when they do that
What I don’t love is when they (KOA is also guilty of this) yell out loud when the other team gets a homerun. Its so confusing.
That wasn't really a typo.
Just typed the wrong word with my hands. They rebel against me sometimes.

Ian is breaking out big time
he is on pace for a nice 34 homers. It’s time to ship out Atkins now that Ian has solidified his spot on this team.
But agreed that it's good
to see some production from 3B. Only taken a cool two months. Now it needs to keep up.

True
But Ian has followed up his good games with, gasp, another good game! Garrett is following up his good game with the same stuff he was before.

Ianetta’s good, but Molina could be the best C in the game

Iannetta brings godlike offense and good defense.

not sure I'd call a .859 OPS "godlike"
but yes, he is a better offensive player than Molina.
He did start off incredibly cold and got it to that
His OPS was .001 off of best among all MLB catchers last year. Best wOBA in the game last year. So if any catcher qualifies as “god-like,” he’s hard to argue against

Yorvit's situation
Just my hunch, but the happy resolution of Torrealba’s situation seems to have loosened this team up tremendously. Something like that puts winning and losing in perspective and they seem much more relaxed.
It could be a complete coincidence that they’re playing well the last three nights, but I bet the tension they felt while it was going on and the relief they feel now has had an impact.
’cause really, who the hell cares about losing streaks or your BA when a kid is in danger like that? Puts it in perspective for me as a fan, too.
My favorite Rockie? Why, Ty Van Burkleo, of course!

My favorite Rockie? Why, Ty Van Burkleo, of course!
Indeed.
But due to the necessity to keep it secret, usually criminal matters like this are classified. Perhaps the fact that it was in another country made the difference. If Yorvit’s kids had been kidnapped in the states, nobody who didn’t have to would have been allowed to know.

Can’t quantify it. I’m just thinking about the impact on any workplace when a co-worker is going through something like that. It’s gotta be hard to concentrate on the task at hand. And, when it ends well, everyone feels a bit closer and more connected to one another.
For all the stat crunching, these are human beings. Very young human beings in some cases. They can’t help but be impacted by outside events.
