Who's it going to be? Missouri RHP Kyle Gibson? Sacramento State OF Tim Wheeler? Prep RHP Matt Hobgood? Arizona State RHP Mike Leake? We'll find out some time after 6:15 ET when the Nationals will select San Diego State RHP Stephen Strasburg with the first overall selection of the 2009 draft.

He' typically on point
But that’s when we’re picking high with less uncertainty.
Hobgood
I’ll leave it up to others to do real analysis of our picks, but I have to say I’ve wanted him since I first saw his name, so that we could nickname him “Hobgoblin.”
I'd be down for nicknaming Matzek "Hobgoblin"
its not as clear as a link with nicknaming Hobgood that but at the same time, someone in the organization needs to be nicknamed Hobgoblin
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
How do we have 34?
I know it’s the sandwich pick, but Jabbs’ article didn’t specify how those are ordered, or I missed it

Three picks in the first 35 is a pretty good hault.
I’m hoping for two pitchers and a corner infielder, personally.
lol so are the Rex Brothers any good???
and will the Rockies draft both of them?

But there is something in that comment.
Draft picks should be traded.

I feel the uncertainty of MLB draft picks and the distance from MLB impact
makes trading draft picks almost pointless. It’s too much potential that might be 3 years away, you know?
The only real purpose would be the teams that are in blatant firesale mode, I don’t see them actually providing the marginal increases to a trade package that they would in the other 3 of the big 4

Actually
I think a scenario would work out where trading picks would be a great idea for a team. Look at the Nationals. Sure Stratsburg is going to be a heck of a player, but there are also risk with drafting pitchers, and with the money he is going to get, I could almost make the argument that the Nats should be able to trade the number 1 pick for another teams number 1 1s and 2 or however you want to look into it. Thus giving them 3 picks for one, and filling more holes in their minor league system.
but your average DP commenter
thinks that the Broncos did a good job trading draft picks and so the Rockies should do the same thing

That's the debate....
Pretty unlikely he doesn’t sign two years in a row. Rockies just need to mention Matt Harrison to scare him a bit. Rockies may have to go a touch over slot and wait till August 15th, but I’d be he signs. There’s no leverage there.
Harrington would be a good guy.....

We’ll see a little more love for Waco later in the year but that’s another sport and another discussion.

I'm OK with Hobgood but...
would rather get someone to fall back to us rather than reaching for him. Crow, Scheppers, GIBSON, Matzek,
I've been reading on Hobgood today
and I’m imrpessed. Fastball with 90-95, big curve, good frame. Comparisons to Goose Gossage. I think he’s a great pick if he falls to us.
Goosage was a starter in the early part of his career
And Hobgood would be a starter too, say he still has good velocity on his fastball in the fifth and sixth innings so nothing suggest that he wouldn’t be a starter.
I just don't trust high school pitchers
Too much can go wrong. I saw Alex White pitch in the super regionals over the weekend, I want him.

The time limit is 5 minutes, so #11 should come within 30-45 minutes or so. In the first hour for sure.

He would have declined
Nobody saw the train wreck that was free agency coming. He expected to get a big payday.
Most likely.
But if he doesn’t, we’re paying Adam Dunn and Eric Byrnes a combined $28 million or so this season, and we still needed a starting 2B, a starting pitcher, and BP help.

Renck at the DP is now saying
that while Hobgood is on the list, the Rockies are also considerting 3b/1b Bobby Butchering.
Keith Law reported that this morning, as shared be David Oh No. Renck is pulling that striaght from Law. Had they been separate sources, this would have more legs.

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jun 9, 2009 1:35 PM MDT up reply actions
That's what K-Law was saying as well
It seems that as the draft is getting closer a lot of HS players are sliding over signability concerns. I can guarantee that a few of them are bluffing and when push comes to shove, they’ll sign with their drafting team. It’s just a matter of the Rockies being able to ferret out which have real demands and which are just posturing.
Borchering would be a great pick if he is somehow still available in Round 32.
We need more corner IF depth.

Heathcott is an interesting one
Scouting report reminds me of Carlos. I’m also all for Leake, assuming Crow or Scheppers don’t drop.
Also relevant:
Insiders are saying that Leake is the second choice for the Tigers after Aaron Crow, with Shelby Miller also being a possibility. So he may be gone before we even get there.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 1:57 PM MDT up reply actions
Mayo's sources are interesting...
He’s now saying the Tigers are going a different direction from Crow, who he expects to still be available for them:
Looking like Tigers choices at 9 for #mlbdraft are: Jacob Turner, Shelby Miller, Mike Leake
after he twittered:
New#mlbdraft mock is up http://tinyurl.com/nnovr2. It’s already updated; Crow will not go 9. How far will he slide?
Anyway, if he's right, that means Aaron Crow should be available at #11
Since I doubt that the Nats would draft him twice. If he is available, we’ve got to take him.
How much
did the Nats offer him last year? I agree with Law that he’s not going to accept anything less.
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
The reasons to accept less outweigh the reasons not to.
At this point he and his agents have played the draft game poorly and I think his best hope for future money is to take less money and hope to get an MLB contract so that he hits free agency quicker.
Matt Harrington
as well as his agents and his family disagree with your assessment.
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
Yeah, that worked out really well for them.
It’s exactly why Crow can’t afford to go through another draft. His only leverage is to squeeze as much as he can out of the drafting team this year, but he can’t go one more.
The problem
is not the player but the agents. There is way too much ego involved in the business to admit that you screwed up last year to take less this year. If Crow knows what is good for him, he’ll look at Harrington as a warning, and ignore his agent and do what it takes to start his pro career.
"Better move your rental cars, I am about to take BP."
-Glendon Rusch
I just watched his video on MLB.com
He still thinks Crow is a possibility, though Crow has been hopping all around the draft predictions. He speculates his agents are trying to shadow his signability so as to lower his draft number so he gets a better team.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions
LOL maybe forget Hobgood
JonathanMayoB3 Now looking Matt Hobgood going 5 to O’s; Wheeler 6 to Giants; Minor 7 to Braves; Matzek 8 to Reds? less than 5 seconds ago
That still leaves Crow out there...
The Rockies have to call the bluff of his agents. He’s not going to spend a second year in Indy ball.
Callis is on the same train:
These six picks look fairly certain:
1. Nationals: San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg.
2. Mariners: North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley.
3. Padres: Georgia HS outfielder Donavan Tate.
4. Pirates: Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez.
5. Orioles: California HS righthander Matt Hobgood.
6. Giants: Georgia HS righthander Zack Wheeler.
From BA’s latest blog post.
I guess Wheeler is the new Beckahm
(Two in the first round, unrelated)
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions
Now 8 from Callis looking certain
1. Nationals: San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg.
2. Mariners: North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley.
3. Padres: Georgia HS outfielder Donavan Tate.
4. Pirates: Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez.
5. Orioles: California HS righthander Matt Hobgood.
6. Giants: Georgia HS righthander Zack Wheeler.
7. Braves: Vanderbilt lefthander Mike Minor.
8. Reds: North Carolina righhander Alex White.
So
We have a good chance at Crow or Scheppers. I would love that. If they are still on the board when we draft, which do we take?
I'm thinking Crow still, but Scheppers would also be a good pick.
I really think it’s in the Rockies interest to take the risk with one of those two because there is no real leverage. They won’t sign until Aug. 17th, but they will sign, eventually. Given that the pick is protected, it’s the best play the team has available, I believe.
Everybody seems to be locked in with Storen at 10 as well,
So right now the only mystery seems to be who the Tigers pick. If their options are high upside HS arms Matzek and Purke or safe college guys like Leake and Brothers. I think they go cheap this year given how the economy’s hurting their corporate ticket base.
They're after Shelby Miller too.
And despite the evidence, I still say there’s possibility they go for Crow.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 3:14 PM MDT up reply actions
I'm surprised they're getting scared off of him
His agents must be very good poker players, as everybody knows they have a terrible hand, but nobody wants to call them on it.
It's possible the Tigers are laying low themselves, playing into Crow's hands...
… and they intend to draft him anyway.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 3:18 PM MDT up reply actions
I'll believe
The Padres will draft and pay Tate when it happens. Not saying it’s impossible bu he’s not their sort of guy. Maybe Moorad has shaken things up?
Tate's not as big a gamble as his draft demands make him seem.
$6 million’s the going rate for HS selections at the #3 slot, see Eric Hosmer last year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Padres did pay him that kind of money there and then go cheap after that.
I should probablyexplain further,
Unless they want a PR disaster like Pittsburgh’s going to have for taking Sanchez, the best players available at that slot are all going to be asking for big money. Since Tate’s not looking for “precedent setting” money like Tyler Matzek is, for instance and just what the #3 pick got last season, he’s a solid value pick without seeming cheap.
I was using the Matt Bush story as an example.
And from my experience in San Diego, there’s never really a fear of a PR disaster. Fan expectations are somewhat low.
This is true, but I think given that Tate's a decent available option
That gives them an out with some cost certainty and won’t seem like it’s out of left field like the Bush pick was. Since everybody seems to see that pick as a near certainty, I’m also guessing there’s some insider knowledge.
Moorad
likes to drop money on outfielders. (See Byrnes, Eric; Green, Shawn)
The Arizona Diamondbacks: Invincible in 18 innings since '01
D'oh!
No Crow for the Rockies, it loks like, but we’ll see what they come up with:
At No. 11 the Rockies will take the most signable high school pitcher, and that Arizona State righthander Mike Leake is not in the equation.
From BA’s blog.
This makes me think that we might go with Shelby Miller...
As long as the Tigers go another direction. At least Leake’s out.
Looks like either Miller or Chad James.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 3:22 PM MDT up reply actions
I just noticed that nobody thinks the GIants are picking Matzek anymore.
That puts him on the list too.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 3:25 PM MDT up reply actions
Right...
… but I am hoping signability is less important than is being stressed.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 3:29 PM MDT up reply actions
Hey hey! We got him after all, eh?
My hopes were fulfilled.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 9:58 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah, the more I think about the Rockies, the more I think James.
I think Miller’s clearly bluffing with his $4 million bonus demand, he’s not going to college, but I don’t know if the Rockies will call him on it since they clearly aren’t about to call Crow or Scheppers on their bluffs.
Is it possible...
that the front office is just going by projections right now, and would plan to pick Crow if he is still on the board.
Maybe...
…. but most people are projecting no teams before us take Crow anymore. So if that’s the case, they’re using outdated projections.
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 3:32 PM MDT up reply actions
Crow
Many people now think that Crow will last until the Supplemental 1st……He doesn’t seem willing to budge from his $4 million asking price which is causing the drop.
He has to budge...
Or he becomes another Harrington. He’s just not going to get that kind of money anymore.
That would be a pretty far drop
If he goes down that far, he would absolutely need to sign. Otherwise, he will be a third time drafter with a signability tag, not exactly going to get a lot of teams interested in him.
Thanks

BA saying Colorado is tight lipped but believed to want a prep right-hander
Which suggests to me two things:
-The Rockies have better relations with Shelby Miller than others and see through the signability issues (Keith Law linked the Rockies to Miller in his second mock before pegging White)
-The Rockies will say draft board be damned and take Garrett Gould. I like Gould a lot at 32, but that is a lot of dreaming for pick 11, and leaves a lot of talent on the board.
Bottom line: I still expect Colorado to stay to form and select a collegiate arm.
He's the only one that makes sense.
The Rockies have had few publicized ties to Gould, and after Gould, you have to reach way down to find another prep righty with a decent first round grade.

Question
Is Washington allowed to select Crow again?
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! HOW can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!
No they can't

I just think it might be amusing
and a way to get another top draft pick next year. If they don’t end up signing Strasburg, then pick Crow and not sign him again, wouldn’t they theoretically be looking at 3 of the Top 12 picks next year?
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! HOW can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!

a player is only allowed to be selected by a team in two straight years if he gives them his written permission to do so.

" When Matzek is locked in, it’s easy to argue that he’s one of the — if not the — top high school lefty in this Draft class. With a fastball that reaches 95 mph and two different breaking pitches, he’s got the tools necessary to succeed. The one knock is that it seems at times that he’s just doing enough to get by. When focused, he really knows how to pitch and put away hitters. It’s a package that should go pretty quickly on Draft day."
by Greg Stanwood on Jun 9, 2009 5:11 PM MDT up reply actions
From ESPN
Matzek can now control all six of his pitches — a fastball that touches 95 mph, a cutter that breaks in on righties, a tailing fastball that breaks in on lefties, a slider, a curve and a circle change.

This has nothing to do with O'Dowd
but everything to do with ownership. O’Dowd and Schmidt would love to take guys like this every year if they were given the budget to do so.
It will be interesting to read what comes out of the Rockies FO in the coming days in discussing money with Matzek. Monfort canmake up for quite a bit of ill will with a blank check being handed to Schmidt and Co. to get this done.
Also, absolute best player available here. Matzek is a future ace, I’m simply floored by this…and still nervous.

Budget picks
maybe a Garrett Richards from OU at 34. Live arm, wonderful off speed stuff, highly inconsistent. Arm warrants the pick but the results do not. Maybe a below slot guy that high.
Perhaps still Poythress, maybe a HS outfielder like Everett Williams or Marisnick… I really can’t say after that bombshell of a first rounder.
One other comment on Matzek, he’ll be our #1 Purp over Friedrich the day he signs.

With higher-ranked talents on the board, the Diamondbacks go for Notre Dame outfielder A.J. Pollock, who had a great summer in the Cape Cod League last year.

I like Bochering, but there are too many players
just like Pollock to take him that high. Wheeler, Jackson, Den Dekker, Mitchell, even Kipnis, they all are roughly similar ceiling outfielders, with Mitchell having the highest ceiling and lowest floor.
Again though, like Colorado, Arizona’s important picks are their later picks today, where you can expect similar talent at cheaper prices.
Pollock
has a lower ceiling, but is expected to make the bigs fairly quickly.

Here's another thought, the Rockies take Aaron Crow or Scheppers at #32 as insurance
In case they don’t sign Matzek and then pick as they regularly would at #34. It makes a lot of sense to do it that way since they would get the #33 pick next year if they don’t sign either one.
alright, just forget everything I say for a little while
Still I’m clearly shell shocked by our pick. The ploy still makes sense with Scheppers, though.
Scheppers was drafted too.
(just kidding)

It also would suggest that
the Rockies only intend to sign two of their three first rounders, which I’m not sure they are prepared to do.
Given the expense of one of them, I see it as more likely now than I did an hour ago...
If one of the two they sign is Matzek, I’d still be happy with that, but otherwise it’s a questionable move.
Dbacks
like players like that. Chris Carter v1.0
The Arizona Diamondbacks: Invincible in 18 innings since '01
And then
they took a Conor Jackson type — mature college hitter w/o much power but good contact.

Could this draft get O'Dowd an extension if it goes well enough?
