2009 MLB Draft Open Thread - OverFlow
The Rockies took a big time prospect in LHP Tyler Matzek with Pick #11.
Who are we going to pick at 32 and 34? Tim Wheeler? Kyle Gibson? Rich Poythress? Slade Heathcott? Tanner Scheppers?

Thread juggling might get tricky
I’m not sure I can handle a draft thread and a game thread while my internet is moving like a snail because of the tornadoes. That and I should be studying…

Ringolsby just mentioned on the pregame show...
… that he believes that there are a couple of Rockies FO people from Matzek’s area that have an idea on how to get him to lower his signing expectations. He didn’t give a lot of details though.
Hehe. That would be awesome.
It’s probably some sort of mentor/coach connection.

Casey Kelly?
Let him play both 1B and pitch like the Red Sox are doing with Kelly at shortstop maybe?
I'm curious to see if the Rockies really played this draft
or simply changed course after things began to crystalize over the past several hours. Was Hobgood a smoke screen? Was Matzek the guy all along? There is so much intrigue here that you have to wonder if this is a very carefully thought out plan.
hate to be cynical about ownership and the FO but I wondered if the pick was just a ruse to get an extra pick next year
and not have to pay out $$$ this year. I just can’t see this ownership group laying out that kind of money.
Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?

knew he wouldn't last.
I would love to see us take Andy Oliver, though that may be overdoing the potentially tough lefty signs.
Wheeler, Brothers still on the board.
Scheppers may be a good idea with that pick then
If we decide the injury is a problem, we can get that pick back.
From Baseballamerica.com mock draft 4.0....
“According to multiple team sources, several of the draft’s best high school players blew them away when they revealed their price tags. California lefthander Tyler Matzek, the best prep prospect in the draft, wants “precedent-setting money,” which is interpreted to mean that he wants to surpass the record $7 million guarantee for a high schooler given to Josh Beckett and Rick Porcello. Texas righthander Shelby Miller, previously believed to be signable for around MLB’s bonus recommendations, is asking for $4 million."
Ouch. Can we really get this kid signed???
That's the big question we're all wondering.
I think in the end the Monfort’s have to sign him to save face, but if he’s too much over what O’Dowd/Schmidt and company say they can reel him in for, it may push our GM out pretty fast. Losing money is a much bigger concern than losing games, we know.
mabey if we lend Dinger out to little kid birthdays
we could make up the diffrence in money or ask Helton for a loan.
they already do that with Dinger

We are NOT
Pimping our catcher.
"Good teams win games, horse**** teams have meetings." - Ozzie Guillen
I doubt his spouse would be in favor of that plan...
And it might be just a little tricky legally/ethically beyond that.
Is Matzek really going to turn down $4 or $5 million
of guaranteed money and risk the draft in the three years? That seems insane too me. Seems like the college guys have a little more leverage.
Oregon's a big time program,
And they typically have a pretty high pull with their commitments. I think it will take over $6 million.
Oregon?
Aren’t they just starting up?
"Good teams win games, horse**** teams have meetings." - Ozzie Guillen
I'm still off, I better get my head straight before I post a story for our next two picks,
But what I should say is that Horton is a big time college coach and he makes Oregon a big time program by himself.
Also
we’re the Rockies. That can only give the other side leverage…
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
But he cat hit at CoorZ Canaveral!!

thinks you guys would have taken Borchering:
Switch-hitter with power from both sides of the plate who has evoked Chipper Jones comparisons. They’re probably doing cartwheels in the Diamondbacks draft room. In his senior season at Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) High, Borchering hit .494 with 13 home runs. There are questions as to whether he can stick at third base. And we’ll see how tough he is to sign. Baseball America reported that his asking price was $2 million, which would be about half a million over slot. There was some concern that Borchering wasn’t going to get to them, but after Colorado made a surprising selection with LHP Tyler Matzek, a potentially tough-to-sign high school arm, it appeared to clear the way for Borchering to fall to the Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks: Invincible in 18 innings since '01
I liked the Borchering selection for you guys, it's the Pollock one that I wonder about.
Still, the whole story has yet to play out, it will be interesting to see what you guys do with your next picks.
I guess
they figure they’ll take a low-upside, high-probability guy to go along with a high-upside guy. Last time we had 2 first rounders, we took CoJack and Carlos Quentin. (But we don’t talk about him anymore)
The Arizona Diamondbacks: Invincible in 18 innings since '01
Also,
there’s some speculation that Pollock may move to play middle infield.

That still leaves Wheeler, Scheppers, Poythress
Even Garrett Gould, who would double us up on HS pitchers would be a great pick and he’s relatively signable.
I like Brothers a lot
Because I think his floor is the highest – if nothing else he looks like he could be a damn good lefty reliever, and we’re really short on those in the system. He’s still got a pretty good ceiling, too.

That leaves Brothers out there, though.
And Wheeler. The Yanks and Red Sox are seemingly taking HS picks just to search for raw upside in these picks. They’ve got nice ceilings, but low likelihoods of hitting them.
With two picks between us...
… we’re going to have at least one of Brothers, Scheppers, and Wheeler available.

Really the big question is with his defense...
If he’s able to stick in center field he’s a lot closer to Fowler, but if as expected he has to move to a corner, he’ll need more offense.

Baseball America's draft blog:
If he’s a center fielder, then he’s quite a value at 32. More likely, he’s moving to a corner, which is why he fell to 32 and didn’t go as high as we had him projected when he was No. 15 on our board.

Four things about Brothers:
1. WOOOOOO
2. We drafted a guy named Rex, which is tremendous.
3. With his big fastball/slider combo, this guy is a valuable lefty reliever at worst, and I like Brothers as a bit of a safer bet to contribute to the big league club, with a ceiling as a Morales-type of starter.

I would have entered the draft…
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
Yep
That’s the same reason I decided not to go into the draft. The Yankees were rumored to be considering me for their first pick, and I wanted to be a Rockie. The fact that I hit just above the Mendoza-line in little league had little to do with my decision.
I can top out at around 70mph
so I try to market myself as crafty. Also one time, I threw a really nasty screwball that was more the product of intense wind and a really dirty baseball…

Yep
I’d say I’m happy. Of course there’s the signability thing, but even if (God forbid) Matzek gets away, I applaud the direction taken. I also like the Wheeler picks a lot (they’re a bit safer but still have high upside) and can see both of them shoring up some weak spots in the system right now. Personally, I’m thinking Wheeler goes to LF and it’s sounds like maybe he could develope some power.

shortstop to be converted to catcher to possible move to third or first if it doesn’t work out. He was announced by EY as a third baseman, however, which leaves me wondering what the team’s intent is.

More on Arenado
“Arenado has a strong build with some size to him, like Yorvit Torrealba”
Seriously…
If a team is convinced he can catch, he could go off the board in the first couple of rounds.
Seems like his Offense was good enough from a catcher’s position but not corner IF. So either we like him as a catcher or we like his offensive projection better than most

Wheelers--another high money pick?
Dave Cameron mentioned that Wheeler slipped down out concerns over his asking price.
Here's a snippet.
His muscular build and howitzer arm appear to fit best behind the dish. Scouts are mixed on Arenado’s hitting. He has powerful hands that enable him to drive the ball long distances, particularly to the opposite field. But there’s some stiffness in his swing, and some scouts worry about his habit of getting too far out front with his front shoulder and arms.
That’s part of BA’s scouting report on him, they say he’s got some nice power potential.
Catcher maybe going to 1B with Power potential

Interesting to see a projected catcher in Arenado
With McKenry and Rosario already in the system, but this kid’s bat looks like the real thing. Watching his scouting video – that follow through on his swing looks EXACTLY like the late Garrett Atkins.

Some interesting picks by the D-backs as well. This will take some digesting, but it looks like solid drafts by most of our divisional peers at first glance.
I'm deeply disappointed in Arizona's 3rd round pick
At least as a Rockies fan I’m disappointed.
Keon Broxton was my favorite player in the Juco world series that was played over here a couple weeks ago. He was drafted as a 3B, but he played CF here and reminded me for all the world of Dexter Fowler. Looks a lot like him and has great speed. Also had great power here, but without metal bats we’ll see if that sticks. He was also listed as the #1 Juco draft prospect as a SS in a preseason article I saw online. Plus, he turned down a D-1 football scholarship as a WR to play baseball. Great, great athlete. It will be interesting to see if he turns that into MLB skills…
