Ringolsby just mentioned on the pregame show...

… that he believes that there are a couple of Rockies FO people from Matzek’s area that have an idea on how to get him to lower his signing expectations. He didn’t give a lot of details though.

I'm curious to see if the Rockies really played this draft

or simply changed course after things began to crystalize over the past several hours. Was Hobgood a smoke screen? Was Matzek the guy all along? There is so much intrigue here that you have to wonder if this is a very carefully thought out plan.

by David OhNo on Jun 9, 2009 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions

hate to be cynical about ownership and the FO but I wondered if the pick was just a ruse to get an extra pick next year

and not have to pay out $$$ this year. I just can’t see this ownership group laying out that kind of money.

From Baseballamerica.com mock draft 4.0....

“According to multiple team sources, several of the draft’s best high school players blew them away when they revealed their price tags. California lefthander Tyler Matzek, the best prep prospect in the draft, wants “precedent-setting money,” which is interpreted to mean that he wants to surpass the record $7 million guarantee for a high schooler given to Josh Beckett and Rick Porcello. Texas righthander Shelby Miller, previously believed to be signable for around MLB’s bonus recommendations, is asking for $4 million."

Ouch. Can we really get this kid signed???

by GoRoxGo on Jun 9, 2009 5:58 PM MDT reply actions

That's the big question we're all wondering.

I think in the end the Monfort’s have to sign him to save face, but if he’s too much over what O’Dowd/Schmidt and company say they can reel him in for, it may push our GM out pretty fast. Losing money is a much bigger concern than losing games, we know.

Nick Piecoro

thinks you guys would have taken Borchering:

Switch-hitter with power from both sides of the plate who has evoked Chipper Jones comparisons. They’re probably doing cartwheels in the Diamondbacks draft room. In his senior season at Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) High, Borchering hit .494 with 13 home runs. There are questions as to whether he can stick at third base. And we’ll see how tough he is to sign. Baseball America reported that his asking price was $2 million, which would be about half a million over slot. There was some concern that Borchering wasn’t going to get to them, but after Colorado made a surprising selection with LHP Tyler Matzek, a potentially tough-to-sign high school arm, it appeared to clear the way for Borchering to fall to the Diamondbacks.

Really the big question is with his defense...

If he’s able to stick in center field he’s a lot closer to Fowler, but if as expected he has to move to a corner, he’ll need more offense.

If he’s a center fielder, then he’s quite a value at 32. More likely, he’s moving to a corner, which is why he fell to 32 and didn’t go as high as we had him projected when he was No. 15 on our board.

That’s the same reason I decided not to go into the draft. The Yankees were rumored to be considering me for their first pick, and I wanted to be a Rockie. The fact that I hit just above the Mendoza-line in little league had little to do with my decision.

I’d say I’m happy. Of course there’s the signability thing, but even if (God forbid) Matzek gets away, I applaud the direction taken. I also like the Wheeler picks a lot (they’re a bit safer but still have high upside) and can see both of them shoring up some weak spots in the system right now. Personally, I’m thinking Wheeler goes to LF and it’s sounds like maybe he could develope some power.

true that

I’m also happy with the approach taken.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

Garrett Gould at 59?

Would he take second round money? Can the Rox afford another first-round type of bonus?

Did Cincinnati not pick anyone at 43?

I gave up on the MLB draft tracker and went over to ESPN to find a current list, and it doesn’t show anyone there for the Reds.

shortstop to be converted to catcher to possible move to third or first if it doesn’t work out. He was announced by EY as a third baseman, however, which leaves me wondering what the team’s intent is.

More on Arenado
“Arenado has a strong build with some size to him, like Yorvit Torrealba”

Seriously…

If a team is convinced he can catch, he could go off the board in the first couple of rounds.

Seems like his Offense was good enough from a catcher’s position but not corner IF. So either we like him as a catcher or we like his offensive projection better than most

Wheelers--another high money pick?

Dave Cameron mentioned that Wheeler slipped down out concerns over his asking price.

by FooMan on Jun 9, 2009 7:39 PM MDT reply actions

Here's a snippet.
His muscular build and howitzer arm appear to fit best behind the dish. Scouts are mixed on Arenado’s hitting. He has powerful hands that enable him to drive the ball long distances, particularly to the opposite field. But there’s some stiffness in his swing, and some scouts worry about his habit of getting too far out front with his front shoulder and arms.

That’s part of BA’s scouting report on him, they say he’s got some nice power potential.

Catcher maybe going to 1B with Power potential

Sounds like Kiel Roling, iirc

Interesting to see a projected catcher in Arenado

With McKenry and Rosario already in the system, but this kid’s bat looks like the real thing. Watching his scouting video – that follow through on his swing looks EXACTLY like the late Garrett Atkins.

Garrett Gould to the Dodgers.

Some interesting picks by the D-backs as well. This will take some digesting, but it looks like solid drafts by most of our divisional peers at first glance.

I'm deeply disappointed in Arizona's 3rd round pick

At least as a Rockies fan I’m disappointed.

Keon Broxton was my favorite player in the Juco world series that was played over here a couple weeks ago. He was drafted as a 3B, but he played CF here and reminded me for all the world of Dexter Fowler. Looks a lot like him and has great speed. Also had great power here, but without metal bats we’ll see if that sticks. He was also listed as the #1 Juco draft prospect as a SS in a preseason article I saw online. Plus, he turned down a D-1 football scholarship as a WR to play baseball. Great, great athlete. It will be interesting to see if he turns that into MLB skills…
