Capps contract

Cots must be wrong on Capps’s contract. It says he has 2.017 yrs of service time entering 2009, yet 2009 is the 2nd yr of a 2yr deal, with a 2009 salary of 2.3M. Why pay a premium for the 3rd pre-arb year if you didn’t lock up any of the arb years at a discount? He must have been arb eligible for 2009.

I’m not sure if I like either of those guys if they’re asking for prospects.

It does look like it's off a year.

This would have been his first arbitration eligible season. John Grabow’s set to be a free agent after this season so he’d be a three month rental.

The question is whether he’s better than Embree, and I think the answer is pretty clearly yes, probably better or at least as good as we could get anywhere for LHP’s out of the pen. The salary plus short term shouldn’t mean that the Rockies would have to give up that significant of prospect talent, but obviously we’d need to send somebody of value the other direction. I still think this is a fine idea.

Capps would require more in talent and that gets a little more tricky, but he might be worth it.

As long as we don't try to close with him

In my limited observation, he seems to be a bit of a choker. He’d definitely be a good pickup though. I wonder if he has any history with Tracy as well.

Oh, and BTW, did anyone notice that Ian Snell retired like 13 straight batters via K in AAA?

That's the way to rebound from a leadoff walk

17 K’s in the game, but no W, so must not have pitched well. And if Tracy put Capps as the closer in front of Street, I’d personally slap him. Same for O’Dowd if he traded Street while in contention

depends on the price

I wouldn’t see him as a “premium” pickup…seems like he has pedestrian K rates considering he’s more of a FB pitcher. OTOH, his unintentional walk rate from 2006-2008 is utterly ridiculous: 18 in 213.1 innings. So what do I know.

shoulder

I wonder if he’s gotten over that shoulder problem as well.
