They showed highlights of the Rockies win last night…just the bottom of the 8th and Street’s last out. THEN…they said “the Rockies have won 4 straight….but it’s the Rockies so it’s no biggie.”

Walker deal

The Rockies got some salary relief (as implied in the Dex comment).

They received Jason Burch, Luis Martinez (ptbnl) and Chris Narveson.

Burch was later part of the trade that brought Rodrigo Lopez, who was ok for half a season before his injury. Narveson was part of a later deal that sent Charles Johnson away, brought BH Kim, and according to my googling, also brought cash. That last one was pretty much a swap of unwanted contracts/players, it seems to me, and Kim seemed a reasonable gamble in that context.

So the Walker deal seems to have worked out pretty well considering they really wanted out of his remaining contract.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Jul 10, 2009 11:07 AM MDT up reply actions

I wonder if any...

GM has tried to do an April Fool’s trade just to dink around with the fan base.

I could see it now Dan O’Dowd and Brian Cashman jointly annoucing that they have swapped each other teams. The Rockies are the Yankees and the Yankees are the Rockies. I would love to see that get done the media outlets in both places would go ape.

Or maybe Dan O’Dowd annoucing that he made a very one sided trade like giving Toronto Ubaldo, Tulo, Ianetta, Hawpe, Hynick, Chacin, Street and Helton in exchange for David Dellucci*

Many fans would probably die of heart attack from that trade

by lizardlad01 on Jul 10, 2009 1:14 PM MDT up reply actions

The problem with that is

that the season usually starts just after the 1st of April, and the rosters are usually set and there’s not any really big trades usually at that time (besides trading guys that are going to be cut)…so it would be sniffed out pretty quick.

It would be funny.

It would be sniffed out pretty quick

but giving the speed of reporting by todays meeting it would take a hour or two maybe to disprove it. I think it would be a lot of fun trying to get like 5 or so players from each team commenting on the trade just to sell the idea to the masses.

“So Todd Helton how do you feel about being a Yankee now?” Tracy Ringolsby
“:Sucks” Helton
“Why does it suck?” TR
“Media coverage in NYC is crazy.”

I get rid of the drama and great team, O’Dowd gets a playoff contending team that can take coverage from the Broncos and Avs.” Cashman

They could even get Selig in on it somehow.

Or, even worse, they could get Selig to announce that, after the season, because of the economy and such, there will be no more MLB.

A farfetched idea? Yes. Would the media figure it out pretty quickly? Yeah. But if you get the GMs, the players, even some of MiLB involved, it could cause a riot for a couple hours.

Talk about giving fans a heart attack.

He seems to be the best option, as he just threw eight pitches last night, though we rocked him in his MLB debut. Other AAA options: Tony Armas (not on 40-man), Jo-Jo Reyes (though I don’t think his rehab is done), and Todd Redmond.

I have nothing but praise for the guy right now. He’s certainly gotten this team pointed in the right direction, but as manager, it’s his job to keep the team on track. Let’s see how the second half goes before we ink him long term.

And how far back are we now?

Rox are 28-11 since JT took over.

He has brought stability to the lineup and handled the pitching staff much better than his predecessor. The move to put Barmes in the 2 hole and leave him there is one of his best decisions. I think it would send a huge message of stability if he were signed to an extension.

As far as DOD is concerned, I agree with Mondogarage. He has done a good job. If nothing else, getting Marquis for Vizcaino is his best move since he’s been here.

Extend them both.

by pedalpusher on Jul 10, 2009 5:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Nobody is arguing that JT is not producing

…and nobody was unhappy with the 2007 WS run that Hurdle pulled together But a review of the entire Hurdle reign makes it clear that he couldn’t produce that over an extended period. I’d like to see a sucessful year (as opposed to a sucessful 6-8 weeks) before extending anybody.

Maybe I should ask the question this way…How much do the Monforts save by signing these guys in July, instead of signing them after a playoff run? How much does it cost them if they extend them now, and decide they need to make another change next year, if the team were to return to Earth? Which scenario has a greater risk/reward ratio?

I think we agree more than we disagree here. I’d love to be proven wrong, and watch the Rockies win 70% of their remaining games.

Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.
