Saturday Rockpile: Alan Embree out for season, Christian Friedrich returns Monday, Esmil Rogers solid in Springs debut
Rockies dealt painful loss - The Denver Post
Alan Embree is out for the season with a broken leg after being hit with a line drive off the bat of Martin Prado. Troy Renck mentions that the Rockies will initially use Jorge De La Rosa to help solidify the bullpen if needed, and are likely to recall Randy Flores (who was just sent down when Franklin Morales was called up earlier in the week) to fill the spot on a more permanent basis.
Embree had struggled quite a bit so far this season but has gotten some outs in some key situations. The Rockies will probably end up missing him a bit, but it definitely shouldn't completely derail the team by any means.
Inside the Colorado Rockies " Friedrich To Return Monday | News and commentary about the Colorado Rockies major league baseball team
According to Jack Etkin, Christian Friedrich will return to action on Monday, as he's scheduled to get the start for Modesto against High Desert. He will be on a pitch count limit of about 75. Good to see him back, and hopefully he gets back on the fast track to the big leagues.
Inside the Colorado Rockies " Rogers moved up to the Springs | News and commentary about the Colorado Rockies major league baseball team
Esmil Rogers was promoted to Colorado Springs earlier in the week, and earned the victory for the Sky Sox on Thursday night at Salt Lake, going six innings and allowing just three runs on nine hits while striking out five - all in a tough park to pitch. Esmil will find himself in a Rockies uniform very soon if he's able to keep things going like he has.

Adding one more:
Tracy’s use of the Pen is good for the relievers. Street went so far as to say it’s the best from a manager he’s seen.
From that article’s note section:
The Rockies have been baffled by reports of their interest in Pittsburgh’s Freddy Sanchez. They are not attempting to acquire him, their focus squarely on bullpen arms. No deal is expected until it gets closer to the July 31 trading deadline
Wolfmaurader points out in the game wrap up from yesterday, that the Rockies have outrighted Jason Hirsh to Colorado Springs. Assuming Embree goes on the 60 day DL..that leaves the 40 man at 38 players. (not to mention where this leaves the career of a former 2 time minor league pitcher of the year)
Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!
This is the second, possibly third time that Pirates journalists have pointed to the Rockies as buyers for a player they're not actually interested in.
Anyone else get the suspicion that they’re just tossing our name out there because Tracy is our manager?

yes

Some guy on the Mets ESPN board posted today…Mets Acquire Todd Helton
“Mets receive: Todd Helton … Rockies receive: Dillon Gee, Jose Corronado, PTBNL That is what the rumored trade is. Here is to Hoping it happens.”
Todd would never waive his no-trade to go to that Hell Hole

Yes, and not really because of Tracy necessarily
But because they know the Pirates are desperate to unload him on somebody. anybody. And if they think they can help the club drum up alleged interest by writing about it, they will.

But why the Rockies?
They could have picked any other team. Instead they’ve picked us three times.

Because that one particular writer is pretty ignorant and just presumes Barmes is teh suxor
Oh, and because the Rox aren’t going to compete for the WC.

The same could rightly or wrongly be said of many other teams.
It’s not just one journalist. Upwards of three separate journalists have said we were interested in Snell/Capps/Sanchez. All Pirates journalists.
All three of these rumors were debunked by NATIONAL journalists, not just Colorado journalists. We NEVER had interest in Snell, NEVER had interest in Sanchez, and had only glazed lightly over Capps.
I’m sorry, but that is really rather odd, don’t you think?

So could they be clearing room to trade an non-40 guy(s) for someone to put on the roster?

They could be doing any number of things, though that makes the most sense.
This isn’t a sudden move… it had to have gotten going earlier in the week, so it is in no way a reaction to Embree’s injury.
Either they wanted a space on the roster for someone else (or in general), or they specifically didn’t want Jason Hirsh on it anymore.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 11, 2009 1:03 PM MDT up reply actions
Time will tell. But it does sound like Hirsh has lost favor
with the powers that be.
"I've had pretty good success with Stan Musial by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third." - Carl Erskine
I am assuming this means he will be made available to a waiver claim
any chance he will be claimed? I personally think Hirsh needs a change of scenery and I don’t think he is a part of our plans. Frankly he shouldn’t be, he has not piched well at all for the Sky Sox.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
He was outrighted today, which means he already passed through waivers.

Ok, thanks for the info, I'm a little surprised no one took a shot at him.

Agreed, but some might wonder if it is a CSC thing and give him a new start

Always a possibility, but at least for now, he remains with the organization.

Hirsh just has not been the same.
After suffering the fibula injury that Hirsh went through in August 2007(unlike Embree’s tibia injury), Jason has just not been the same it seems. An ERA over 5.5 last year and over 6.5 this year, I don’t think the Rox have the same interest in Hirsh than the phenom he was several years back.
he hurt his shoulder
and hasn’t been the same.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
"they mention that the Rockies' interest in the All-Star second baseman has dwindled."
This reminds me of my interest in flowers the first time I was offered one at an airport.
Some guy: Would you like this flower?
Teenaged Me: Uh, sure, flowers are nice.
Some guy: Would you like to make a donation…
Teenaged Me: Here’s your flower back…

By holding onto him, the Rockies just encourage the stagnation of their minor league system
Eschew Obfuscation!
What?
Yeah, those hot young prospects Matt Miller and Matt Murton and Christian Colonel are just blocked and it’s a travesty and… wait, they’re all 26 and 27 years old and not really prospects? And there aren’t really any outfield prospects knocking at the door, either? Then what in the world are you talking about?
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
The Shawn Chacon Experience - Life as a Rockies fan, one day at a time: Because we're all still recovering from those nine blown saves.
'Tis the principle of the thing...
the Rockies have a surplus of good to above average outfielders (yes, six constitutes a surplus). Dealing from that position of strength to shore up a position of weakness (the bullpen, perhaps) makes sense. I don’t think you’ll disagree with me there.
Look, Murton can replace Spilborghs’ numbers on the big league club while the Rockies get someone else that they can use from another team. Leaving the situation as is would be a waste of an easy way to improve the ballclub. It’s downright inefficient.
Eschew Obfuscation!
I agree with them being picky about trades but
I sure hope they are looking hard for bullpen help.

Me too, Rogers or even Escalona
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
So he takes Hirsh's place on the 40 man roster.
Noticed they haven’t put Embree on the DL yet according to the roster on the official site. Probably happen sometime before game time.

It has to.
Somebody has to leave the 25 man for Belisle to activate, which is obviously Embree.

Called up? By us?
But…but… Belisle?

Belisle doing okay
He’s not doing that bad so far in Triple-A, with the ERA under 4.00. Maybe it’s a short term fix, while the Rox look for more relief help.
doesn't sound like the Belisle we know
he’s mostly giving up singles—5 2B and only 1 HR in 35 IP.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Maybe it was a Clint Hurdle thing
Belisle’s problems seemed to take place during Hurdle’s watch. Maybe with Tracy at the helm, he might issue of those ultimatums to Belisle or be on the trade block. I read that Jack Etkin talked with Jim Tracy about “not ruling anything out” in regards to Belisle possibly returning late in the season after Belisle’s successful surgery on Saturday.
who's surgery?
Belisle had surgery Saturday?
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Sorry, I meant Embree in regards to the surgery
One of those days getting Embree and Belisle confused.
Sanchez threw a no-no against the Pads?
That should qualify him for only half a no-no.
Also, I’m going to the game tonight, so a) it better not rain, and b) we had better win. (That’s your cue, Mr. All-Star….)
Also, I was REALLY hoping we were done with the unfortunate Matt Belisle chapter of our history.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Posting from my iphone on the way downtown.
Oh god. Why is Belisle back on my team?
Will attempt to post from the game if possible.
No more asking please for wins, now I'm telling you: YOU WILL WIN.

Modesto pitching stops McOwens' 45-game hitting streak
Kudos to the Nuts pitching staff stopping an impressive 45-game hitting streak. Maybe there are a couple of NL pitching staffs somewhere out there that can slow down the Dodgers and Giants for a few days.
