Game 88: Kris Medlen vs. Jason Hammel
Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies, Jul 12, 2009 1:10 PM MDT
The Rockies dodged a bullet when they learned that Braves ace Javier Vazquez will miss his scheduled start today due to a strained lower abdominal muscle--but they still have to wake up on offense to take advantage of their good fortune to even the series at two games apiece.
Getting the ball in a spot start today is Kris Medlen (2-3, 5.72 ERA, 3.84 FIP), whose peripherals suggest that he's been a much more effective pitcher than his ERA gives him credit for. He does have a propensity for walking batters (5.40/9) though he does strike out quite a few (9.21/9). Medlen is more of a flyball pitcher, which should play right into the Rockies' hands.
Medlen was shelled by the Rockies earlier this year---let's do that again please. However, he really doesn't have anything to lose in this start, making him a dangerous opponent.
Opposing Medlen will be Jason Hammel (5-4, 4.07 ERA, 3.81 FIP), one of the more pleasant surprises for the Rockies this year. Hammel pitched (and lost) in the first Atlanta series.
Unfortunately, most of Hammel's success has come on the road (4-2, 1.97 ERA) while he has struggled at Coors Field (1-2, 7.00 ERA). Opponents are hitting .363 off of Hammel at home with a .395 BABIP, so at least a measure of Hammel's home struggles is due to bad luck. Let's hope that Jason has his good stuff this afternoon.
Seth Smith gets two starts in a row and is hitting 3rd! It looks like Tracy is going with the alternating LR strategy today, Cotton. Let's see how it pays off for him.

Yes, we must
And we must pray for the Padres to discover some offense. They’re facing Zito today, shouldn’t be that hard.
yea seriously and Corriea is probably there
best pitcher right now so technically with the “Ace” going against there #4 they hopefully will win today….HOPEFULLY

Of course not.
Just pointing out that in this case, this isn’t just a case of the media pumping up a guy just because he’s a Yankees prospect.
Are you watching the broadcast?
They didn’t plug anybody else like they plugged him.

Hey I have a question
What is all the crap on the helmets of baseball players? It looks like they burn them but I can’t tell. Anybody know?
Sticky substance batters
put on their bats to get a better grip, so they don’t throw the bat into the stands very often.

Actully it is used
to get a better grip on the bat so it does not rotate as they swing. If you have ever looked at a metal bat they have the grip tape around the bottom to prevent the bat from moving when the batter swings (it’s also for comfort and sting purposes). Pine tar is used in the same way on wood bats for grip.

bb-ref has .246/.356/.439
somehow I don’t think he’ll PH .480 for the year. Nevertheless, this isn’t the way to break into the lineup.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Used early in the lineup
It’s not bad. Dex has a similar obp. The two of them batting 1-2 makes a pitcher throw an awful lot of pitches leading into helton and hawpe.

Plus, when he gets more than one start in a row he tends to be better. He’s gone 12 for 33 (.363) in the two streaks he’s had three starts or more in a row.

Um, wow
The Braves announcers just said that the Royals got a pretty good shortstop from the Mariners the other day.
Yes, they did.
A couple of days ago, the Royals picked up Yunieski Betancourt from the Mariners for two minor league pitchers.
Of course, in Aviles the Royals had one of the two that was actually worse.
So I guess technically it does count as an upgrade.
Reaction on BBTF
One positive: Yuniesky Betancourt is a better player than Tony Pena Jr.
This is debatable. Seriously, it is.
IIRC
Aviles is a much better defensive SS than Yuni. UZR suggests he’s having trouble this season, but in general, yea

I think it is too soon to tell
But he definitely has bizarre splits so far this year. Most players find PH’ing to be the impossible role.

yep maybe
but people who think he is an every day player are delusional…seriously what has he done that proves he is an everyday guy….not knocking him i love Smitty but not to start back to back days like ever lol

He hit well in the minor leagues
and has shown the ability to hit in limited PA’s in the majors so far.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
all he needs is an error in the OF
to cap it off

For all future Smitty starts
have one of the off starters stand in the on deck circle for Smitty. Make him think he is PHing every time.
lol

In a feeble effort to improve the Rockies' pitching and hitting today, I'm doing my part by creating an overflow thread that will remove the foul taste of the first 4.5 innings from our mouth.
Eschew Obfuscation!
Wow, what a play by Atty!
