Victorino? What a joke!

The fans in the first vote didn’t vote him in……his peers didn’t vote him in……and yet he’s starting in the all star game. Nice going Manuel.

Manuel Only choose him because he's a phillie

This is bull. I mean who didn’t want to see Hawpe Play CF?

It *is* bull. Manuel should have chosen Werth

Plus corner guy who can play CF. He’s like Spilly, except with 20 HR and with ability to steal bases.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

Read the article.

Victorino is not a bad player, by the way.

Brad Hawpe playing CF: THAT would be a joke.

by Tom (RFTN) on Jul 13, 2009 12:52 PM MDT up reply actions

oh Victorino isn't bad by any stretch

But why isn’t, say Adam Dunn there? He’s had a monstrous 1st half. Or say Matt Kemp or Colby Rasmus? Nope, need to add yet another Phillie into there.

Because Adam Dunn would be even more hilarious in CF than Hawpe.

Yes he did

but Manual chose Werth over Dunn or Rasmus. Kemp could’ve been DQed on that account for being in the fan vote, but I’m sure he was eligible to be chosen.

Put Braun in center. Why would Hawpe be the leading candidate over Ibanez and Braun?
This ASG is overrun by Phillies. Five of their starting lineup are in the game now, three starting. We should have voted in Kemp or Fat Ichiro.

The fans have absolutely no business voting on the all star team.

It ends up being like voting for homecoming queen in high school. The most popular girl wins. Let the players and coaches pick. No media. no fans. Then the most deserving would make the team.

“We weren’t swinging the bats, making our pitches. It just wasn’t our series”

No details have emerged yet as to who will be advancing to the NLCS, but the Phillies clearly outplayed themselves, yet find themselves going home.

In unrelated news, an MLB probe is being set up to investigate the Umpiring crew from the NLDS.

“…there’s just no way a team like Philadelphia doesn’t win that series,” said commissioner Bud Selig from his boat off of the coast of Key Largo. “The large markets are simply more dedicated to winning. Just look at their payrolls!”

Hank Goldberg

During Sunday’s game Drew and George were talking about the fact that one year (I don’t have the year and I am at work so I do not have time to look it up) Hank Golberg had over 100 RBI at the break and did not make the all-star game. Probably anti-Semitism in effect, but they also brought up the point that the manager of the ASG that year was his manager and he did not want to take to many of his own guys. So the way I see it one of two things has happened.

1. It is now OK to discriminate against white guys from Texas. I have no clue what Hawpe’s religion is and really don’t care, but straight white guys, preferably from Texas, are the only people it is PC to discriminate against so maybe we are onto something here.

2. The tabu of loading up the ASG roster with guys from your team is now history.

I am leaning toward 2 being the answer, but wonder about 1.

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

This is not the first thing Manuel has got wrong.

Take, for instance, who he pegged to start:
Lincecum: 2.33 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 2.40 BB/9, 4.38 K/BB, .217 AVG (against)
D. Haren: 2.01 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 1.11 BB/9, 8.06 K/BB, .195 AVG (against)

Don’t be surprised when Pujols and Braun get pulled in the 2nd inning for Howard and Werth. Lord help me, I might have to root for the American League.

Well, of course.

He’s not going to have a 2.01 ERA the entire season. He’ll regress some.

But he’s had a much better first half of the season, pitching in one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the majors, than Timcecum has pitching in AT&T.

-Pygalgia

by DbacksSkins on Jul 14, 2009 4:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Why does the all-star game have to be based solely on who had the best 3 months?

As that’s pretty much Haren’s argument over Lincecum. If you include previous history, and rest-of-season projections (which would take account of both previous history and the 3 months of this year), Lincecum makes a very good case.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Jul 15, 2009 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Because

it’s the “2009 All-Star Game”, not the “2008 All-Star Game, Played In 2009”. Also, Lincecum’s “previous history” is basically all of 2 seasons…. when you select players based on reputation, then you get situations like Raffy Palmeiro winning a Gold Glove for playing DH.

Haren’s been better this season, in an extreme hitter’s park, at preventing baserunners and preventing runs. That’s the pitcher’s job.

I would like to join in solidarity with you Rockies’ fans regarding the All-Star game. Charlie Manuel has managed to anger both our fan bases (Dodgers for not choosing Kemp to replace Beltran, despite MLB pushing him to do so; and now this with Hawpe).

I understand the need to have a “real” CF starting the game, but per the rule Hawpe had the highest player vote among the non-starting OF, so he should be starting. Who cares if someone is out of position for a few innings? Is it really that bad of a thing?

Down with the Phillies, and Charlie Manuel.
