All-Star Game Thread
Tonight the Phillies, er, the NL looks to end the recent dominance of the AL in the All-Star Game (haven't won since 1996). In case you don't know: This Time it Counts. In other words, the winner of the game will be given home-field advantage in the World Series.
Many people wish that this weren't so:
All-Star Identity Crisis (Crasnick)
Change the Format Now (Bryant)
Whatever the hue and cry, the MLB All-Star game remains by far my favorite edition of the game.

Did anyone watch the parade...
The Red Sox, Rockies, and one other team (that I saw anyway) had all their All-Stars in one truck, while others all got their own. I wonder why…
It was so cool to see Brad and Marquis announced for the rosters. I’m just glad the Cards fans didn’t boo Jason, being an ex-Cub and all!

Apparently Marquis is one of the NL pitchers unlikely to get in the game.
Bummer. I’d have to look at the roster and see who else has been in previous All-Star games and when they pitched last, but you’d think they’d try to get a guy in his first (and maybe only) All-Star appearance.
Maybe they'll go
16 innings again and get him in

And Marquis is a logical guy to hold back for insurance purposes (you don’t want want starters in case you need guys to go multiple innings). But I wish he’d planned it more carefully.

Since there’s absolutely no baseball and everything.
I got it screened for me ages ago.
/brag
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 7:41 PM MDT up reply actions
I have only given a positive review to one Potter film.
This was not it. David Yates, like he did with part 5, is probably the most competent director with the material. However, Part 6 was not one of the better books, and the story suffers significantly as a result.
Much of the climax was removed, making the entire thing feel like little more than one big setup for the upcoming two part final chapter.
Jim Broadbent was great.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 7:43 PM MDT up reply actions
Correct.
He was an entertaining character.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 7:45 PM MDT up reply actions
That first scene with him (I'd assume they kept it the same for the movie)
How’d the graphics look with him changing from a chair? Sorry to bombard you with questions.
I saw the movie and read the book so long ago, I don't even remember that at all (in book or film)
My screening was back in February (the film was ready in November, for the original December release, but got bumped up to the Summer).
With all the movies I see, I can’t recall that detail. Sorry for the let-down.
I do recall the graphics in general to be superb, as they were under Yates with Part 5
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 7:51 PM MDT up reply actions
Nah, it's alright. Now at least I have something to look forward to!
I didn’t realize it was supposed to release in December.
It was
but due to the success of the most awsome movie ever made, they bumped it to July
FHWEE Woodie!!!
Hey I'm on Youtube!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gAlLTZsGUg
It was a result of the WGA strike of 2007.
With the writers out of commission for five months, Hollywood studios had very few projects ready to go for release this Summer.
As a result, several projects that were ready for December release (Harry Potter 6, Star Trek, etc) were bumped to the Summer to fill it with more movies, because they didn’t have enough.

The first and second films (Columbus') are VERY faithful to the originals.
If you think those have stuff cut, wait until you get to books 4+, where Rowling adds an entire other book of useless fat to each book in an attempt to make it appear she’s an actual novelist.

I'm glad I'm not alone.
It’s not that I never wanted to read them. It just became a situation where I was resisting the fad. Which I don’t always feel the need to do that, but I did in this case, for no really good reason, as I’m sure I would enjoy the books. Some day, maybe.
They're not particulatly good....
… (in my obviously subjective opinion), but I read them to ensure I am kept up on pop culture, a necessity in my field.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 7:49 PM MDT up reply actions
I generally don't need books to be high quality literature.
I can enjoy brain candy now and then. And I’m just going off of other things I’ve enjoyed and the opinions of friends and family whose tastes I often share. So really, I don’t know why I’ve never gotten around to it.
It's now so low quality that I would call it "brain candy"...
… they’re just very “meh”. The first two are very childish (out of necessity), 4-6 are very angsty, and the final bit has far too much to wrap up for its own good.
The third book is the best, and ironically (in a sad way), my least favorite of the films.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 7:52 PM MDT up reply actions
The books do get a little... uh, lengthy, in describing some things.
It’s come to the point where I just completely skip over chapters when I read it.
Books 4-6 are FILLED with useless information.
7 needed to be as long as it was. Perhaps even longer. If only Rowling had devoted more of her earlier works to wrapping stuff up.

The female growth hormone he was using is used to minimize testosterone levels accumulated after using performance enhancing drugs.
That’s still naught more than circumstantial evidence, but you have to admit it’s not all that unlikely of an explanation as to why he was on it.

The hormone DIMINISHES testosterone levels. If anything, it probably made him less fertile.

He';s in the A's minor league system.
So he’s not really out of baseball. But in terms of not playing in the majors, yes.

Upton better get a hit in the bottom of the 9th
He owes his teammates and fans of the NL that, at least. He also owes us all a steak if the NL loses.

It’s flat out dumb to put this much riding on an All Star game
by GoldenNugget on Jul 14, 2009 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions
They came up with it after the ASG in Milwaukee a few years back (it was before my time too)
When players just up and left the game because they didn’t care.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions
Well...
…the game ended in a tie. That’s why they changed it, to ensure that that would never happen again.

I know iot ended in a tie.
I was under the assumption the reason they cou;couldn’t keep going was because many of the players active on the roster had already left the game.

Not enough pitchers available
from what I remember.

Somebody mentioned somewhere that several of them had left the game and gone home.
I may have misunderstood.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 14, 2009 9:29 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah, a lot of them do
That wasn’t why they changed the formula, though. They can’t be used again anyway, so a lot of them just leave. It was all about saving pitchers.
"Horton is win."
--Horvil Tiki
Right
The tie was the impetus, but as I said above, I know that a number of old-time players had been complaining about it before that.
It was all about pitchers
Both bullpens were empty in the 11th, and they were on relievers. I believe the score was 7-7. They did the right thing, but they didn’t want it to happen again.
"Horton is win."

Give me a decision
in the All-Star Game or give me death! No, that doesn’t quite have a ring to it.

It’s still only one game. Not a big deal. All the other sports are like that. It’s just supposed to be fun, but whatever
by GoldenNugget on Jul 14, 2009 9:26 PM MDT up reply actions
Again, so what
In a 162 game season you take away a lot by just saying one game decides home field adv in the world series. The honor should just be being named to the game.
by GoldenNugget on Jul 14, 2009 9:29 PM MDT up reply actions
They should
make it so if the NL wins, the AL has to abolish the DH rule for the next season. That’d make things interesting!
Dunno what the AL would do the NL though…

by El Paso Jeff on Jul 14, 2009 9:31 PM MDT up reply actions
Or take a week off
and make it a whole series, that was it is more fair, each pitcher would pitch for a lot longer and players would play for longer too
by GoldenNugget on Jul 14, 2009 9:32 PM MDT up reply actions
I don't necessarily disagree about the home field thing.
But the game itself has, in my opinion, been much better. It really was getting to be a huge joke. Guys would get taken out in the 3rd inning and leave the stadium. When the game ended, the dugouts would be practically empty. The MLB All-Star game has a lot more tradition behind it than the other All-Star games, and players really did take it pretty serious until recent years.
Part of me hates it
But the other part of me hates the idea that a team like the Angels would have home-field advantage in the traditional way by beating up on a terrible division.

Last year, Philly fans went after Hurdle for losing the game...
should we go after the Philly fans this time?
I got nothing.
philly fans are tortured enough

? It's not as if they actually won a world series.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Yup
You should always go after Philly fans. After all, they’re the only fans that boo Santa Claus. Them going after Hurdle was because Lidge got up and warmed a few times. Hurdle’s pitcher did all he could to win the game when the defense – errr, Dan Uggla – was doing its best to give it away.

Naw, Crawford deserves credit for his catch.
He did it in the All Star Game, which has no bearing on the Rockies. If he made that catch during an important season or post-season game… maybe.
