Ryan Speier recalled; Joel Peralta optioned to Colorado Springs
Ryan Speier will finally get his chance to prove his worth to the big league club, as the Rockies recalled the soon-to-be 30 year old righty from Colorado Springs. Speier posted a 4.80 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP in 17 appearances with the Sky Sox. He struck out 11 and walked 8 in 15 innings pitched.
To make room for Speier, the Rockies optioned Joel Peralta to the Springs. Peralta pitched well upon being called up to the big club earlier in the season, but has struggled of late - particularly in his last two outings, where he allowed four runs on six hits while only recording four outs. Last night wasn't the first time the D-Backs got to Peralta, either; on July 4th, five Snakes reached against him and all of them came around to score.
Speier last pitched on Sunday against Fresno, so it's conceivable that he could go tonight if needed. Hopefully, that won't be the case.

Man,
Peralta was really good for a couple of days there.

Odd move
perhaps something had to be done about Peralta at some point, but Speier has more or less been crummy in his rehab, and doesn’t have the type of major league acumen to believe he was just suffering from a rusty return from rehab.
This does nothing to help the bullpen, and may in fact hurt it.

this reminds me of the old line
about rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. not that we’re in titanic mode, but I agree that I’m not exactly convinced that this move saves the day.

Yeah but he's really the only guy down there that has any MLB relief experience...
That said, the Rockies are indeed up in the night if they think he’s the answer to their problems. Peralta was really stinking it up though, so I understand the need to move him.

I'm not a Speier fan
This is not an upgrade. At best it’s and equal move. The only upside, is that Speier has a different arm angle from anyone else in the pen.
Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

Speier's arm slot
is similar to Daley’s, no?
