the bullpen would really appreciate it if you threw a shutout today, and offense, well, if you don’t dominate against Garland, I might throw something.

The only reason this makes me nervous is that it means it will be Hammel facing Cain, at home.

That’ll be a steep win. But you’re right, I’d rather risk one game than risk further damaging Marquis hand.

I had a dream last night...

We were up by one and the score was some crazy number like 20-19 or something like that. It was only the third inning, but we didn’t want to lose the lead, so we had Street pitch for seven innings.

The bullpen is giving me nightmares.

-Pygalgia

by DbacksSkins on Jul 22, 2009 1:23 PM MDT up reply actions

that was a ludicrous pitch

probably a ball, but at that speed and that close, easy call for the umpire. Reynolds probably did get jobbed a bit, but that’s what you want the pitcher to do.

by Teekalong on Jul 22, 2009 1:23 PM MDT up reply actions

on the top-view replay

it was clearly off, definitely not on the edge, but well within the zone that umpires often call. Too close for Reynolds to take.

by Teekalong on Jul 22, 2009 1:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Ubaldo

throws sliders/changeups when he just needs to throw his heat. See..throws his heat and freezes Reynolds. That’s what he needs to do

by CentralCaliRox on Jul 22, 2009 1:22 PM MDT reply actions

Agreed.

Establish your fastball in the early innings, and then later on mix in off-speed stuff when they are already expecting the fastball. Especially when you can throw as hard as he does.

by RoxnSox09 on Jul 22, 2009 1:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Yorvit loves to call for the breaking stuff

thats one of the biggest differences between the games he calls compared to CDI.

by realmenwearpurple on Jul 22, 2009 1:24 PM MDT up reply actions

You always hear pitching coaches and managers

talking about how everything keys off the fastball. If you can command your fastball, the other pitches become more effective. But until you’ve established that your fastball is a weapon, they can wait for a hanging off-speed pitch.

by RoxnSox09 on Jul 22, 2009 1:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Froze Reynolds

because it was off the plate.

Probably too close to take, though.

Gameday called it a strike. Also called the inside fastball a strike. In fact, according to gameday, only two of seven pitches failed to touch the zones

Unless the ump is wildly inaccurate,

Gameday calls everything the ump calls a strike, a strike. You’ll even see that they go back and change the placement of some pitches on Gameday after the game.

Or even

just after the inning. My assumption has always been that it’s an agreement with the umpires’ union.

-Pygalgia

by DbacksSkins on Jul 22, 2009 1:34 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah probably so

Though one of the clearer strikes by gameday was called a ball. Also, isn’t gameday what the fangraphs hit used to contend young is screwed by umps?

That is not the case.

As someone who was trained in GameDay’s operation, unless the equipment at the stadium is broken, the paths on GameDay are very much accurate.

by Greg Stanwood on Jul 22, 2009 1:51 PM MDT up reply actions

do they change outlier calls after the inning to look like the umpire is more accurate?

Not after being traumatized by a doozy of a hail storm when I was in 6th grade or so.

Nine pitches in the ab to Reynolds. Two balls, none in the middle of the zone, seven right on the edge, with all of them low except a 99mph heater. He was really locating, with gas, change and slider. Wow

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jul 22, 2009 1:27 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

yep

they showed a slo-mo of his change/forkball and that thing had some serious break. If he ever learns how to use that pitch effectively (ie, not just as a change of pace) he could be unstoppable. Probably not at Santana level, but Santana can’t hit 99.

Or if you’re not going to get rid of the rule, at least clarify it.

-Pygalgia

by DbacksSkins on Jul 22, 2009 2:14 PM MDT up reply actions

It's pretty damn clarified

Read through the rule on pitchers. Explains every situation that a balk would need to be called.

by ShadowPenguin on Jul 22, 2009 2:17 PM MDT up reply actions

When

even very good umpires can’t agree across the board as to what a balk is, I’m not sure how you can just point to MLB’s rules and call them “clarified”.

"In the future, I want to be a fossil. Or, at least have my feces be fossilized"
-Pygalgia

by DbacksSkins on Jul 22, 2009 2:26 PM MDT up reply actions

That comes down to the fact that a lot of umpiring

is personal judgment of what they see. Did they see the ball in the glove or the foot on the bag first? Did they see the ball outside the plate? MLB provides the framework for defining a balk, the umpire has to determine if what they saw violates those rules.

Basically, they’d each have to see a movement, decide if they thought it was a balk, and call it. You’d get some who thought it was fine, while others call a balk. It really depends on how tightly those umpires interpret the rule. Can’t really “clarify” judgment calls further than that.
