Red Sox Acquire Adam LaRoche
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Red Sox have acquired Adam Laroche.
Hey, it's a more credible Pittsburgh source!
Looks like the Sox aren't too pleased with how Lowell's hip is looking. Downside for us is that we won't have Garrett Atkins being shipped off to Boston for delicious young relief pitching.

lol
we were totally going to get Bard, right?
site's not loading for me
Did the article say who Pittsburgh received?
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
hasn't gotten that far
I think Red Sox Nation is performing a malicious attack on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s website

This might suggest the market is still really expensive
as he’s pretty consistent, but is an underwhelming bat at 1st. People are probably asking for their tastier young players, but they seem to want to hang onto those guys.

Either them,
or North Korea.

it was kind of a throwback to the Rockies World Series Ticket Debacle

Sally league pitcher and AA good field no hit shortstop
WEEI in Boston reports that the Pirates receive Hunter Strickland and Argenis Diaz.

Good return for the Pirates
this is better then the 2 sandwich picks they would get for LaRoche as a free agent, and don’t have to worry that LaRoche could actually accept arbitration. Strickland seems to be a nice add to an organization actually.
Not to mention the salary savings the Pirates will get for the remainder of the year.
Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!
Yep, he just misses the cut

That's actually a fairly crummy return
considering that neither of the two has a skill that suggests major league talent. The Rockies grow Diaz’ s like crab apples, and Strickland is a dime a dozen arm. Not saying LaRoche is worth much for the next two months, but the players moving to Pittsburgh aren’t much in the way of talent. Whatever salary relief they get for the next two months is the best gift of this trade.
Was there reason to expect much more?
LaRoche wasn’t so great, and it’s been reported that few teams want to take on payroll, so that doesn’t leave much for him.

A decent move
The Pirates can turn 1b over to a guy with a lot more power and upside than LaRoche in Pearce…
I think this deal means that the Rockies were not going to get a compelling reliever for Atkins and have probably decided they are better with him as insurance at 1st or 3rd. Not sure which would be a better move, don’t want to be left in a lurch with inexperience at 3rd or 1st if an injury were to occur, but the bullpen has started off the 2nd half pretty poorly.
If Atkins
would bring back a quality bull pen arm….I think we all would take that…including the FO. But that doesn’t look to be realistic.
So I’m fine to have him as depth. In fact very relieved to have him as depth. He was a career. .299 hitter coming into the year. He can play first and third (granted got great, it’s why he’ a back up). He’s experienced, but in years he’s not too old. In fact, I’m actually glad to have him.
Quality Bench depth is one area to me that separates a contender from pretenders. And I think Atkins IS quality bench depth (that I should point out is different then quality starter, which Atkins is no longer)
Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!
He does know how to work a count and take a walk
He’s still an ok batter, just a godawful hitter. He is batting .375/.500/.500 in PH situations.

Well I figure a hitter
is someone who can get hits, has a level swing or whatever.
A batter can work a count and still has positive OBP results in general, ie. can take a walk
