Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 3: Todd Helton hits game-winning homer and 500th double to take two of three

Todd Helton became the 50th player to hit 500 career doubles when he knocked one off the right field scoreboard in the third inning. He would then hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Rockies ahead of the D'Backs 4-3.

We salute you, Todd Helton!

The bullpen pitched well today, as Matt Daley threw a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts and Juan Rincon followed in the eighth with a 1-2-3 inning. And just to shake things up, Huston Street also threw a 1-2-3 inning.

whitesell ks to end the game

I only had gameday. Were they strikes? Gameday says all three well czlled strikes but all were outside the zone. Especially the last two. I guess that doesn’t jive with dbacksskins’ theory that the location is adjusted to make the umpire look better

Last two were balls

Second strike was a makeup call for ball two, which definitely was a strike. Then Whitesell started jawing at the ump, which is why I would guess he got rung up on the last one.

It's not adjusted immediately,

but rather, a little later. I’m not sure if those calls were bad enough to get rewritten, though.

Sorry dude

Those calls were BS. They made me smile, but it’s a cheesy way to lose a game.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

I thought

they were out of the zone, but I’ll take them.

Nice

I totally forgot there was a game today. Wandering in here and seeing that they won is like finding money in your jeans. A nice surprise brought about by your own forgetfulness

Way to go boys. Glad you did OK without me.

YOU SUCK TODD HELTON

you couldn’t have done this last night when I was at the game, and not today when I’ve been working the phones and emails, like I don’t think I ever have, and missed it all?

Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

by Redhawk on Jul 22, 2009 4:26 PM MDT reply actions

ESPN just showed

that Todd Helton is only the 5th player to get 500 HRS, 320 Hrs, and have a .325 career batting average.

And those other names….all legends. Stan the Man Musail, Babe Ruth, Ted Wiliams…I didn’t catch the others

Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

Once the stats start to get quite so selective

It’s not really all that meaningful. Just like saying “omg the Rox are so great since June 4th” when the season began, uh, two months earlier.

by biondino on Jul 22, 2009 4:43 PM MDT up reply actions

Helton was mentioned with 5 other Hall of Famers

and it’s not meaningful?

There are no Rockies in the HOF…to have one listed with those…is very meaningful.

Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

by Redhawk on Jul 22, 2009 4:48 PM MDT up reply actions

The problem is making your guy the lower bound

He’s got to be good to even be able to do so, but it makes it misleading. “here are are all these inner circle guys and my guy.”

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Jul 22, 2009 5:00 PM MDT up reply actions

Well if their was some crazy stat

like, guys with goatees, or Names that start with H

but it’s not…it’s 500 Doubles, 320 HRs and a career BA of .320. These are not “fluke” stats, or obscure stats

Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

by Redhawk on Jul 22, 2009 5:06 PM MDT up reply actions

My pt isn't the value of the categories, it's the misleading use of them

As if Helton can only look good if we use stats in the lamppost-supporting-drunk style.

We see this all the time. I don’t see why it should be any more acceptable when the media pulls this sort of braindead stuff to try to make Todd look good. They cherry-pick the baselines so the guy barely qualifies for the club, then point to all the superior members.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Jul 22, 2009 5:14 PM MDT up reply actions

When you talk career stats like that

it becomes VERY meaningful.
You’re confusing focusing on a small sample size with looking at entire careers.

by ShadowPenguin on Jul 22, 2009 4:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Well okay

How does it look if you up the qualifying mark to 330 homers? It’s an arbitrary figure chosen purely cos it makes Todd look great. He IS great, but that doesn’t mean it’s not artificial. You may as well add “and who are famed for their goatees” and then I’ll bet he’s even more exclusive.

by biondino on Jul 22, 2009 5:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Is "320 homers" a recognised milestone?

At least say you know where I’m coming from. I’m not just being churlish, I just think it’s a bit contrived!

by biondino on Jul 22, 2009 5:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree

“Todd Helton is the WORST player to have a career .320 avg, 320 HR, and 500 doubles!”

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Jul 22, 2009 5:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Nah, actually

I think the career batting average is a better indicator/milestone.
But yeah, it’s probably one stat narrowed too far. Take out the homers, I’d like to see that company. 500 doubles and .320 BA.

by ShadowPenguin on Jul 22, 2009 5:17 PM MDT up reply actions

500+ doubles and .320+ career BA

Gave me these names (in descending doubles #):
Tris Speaker
Stan Musial
Ty Cobb
Nap Lajoie
Honus Wagner
Paul Waner
Wade Boggs
Charlie Gehringer
Tony Gwynn
Harry Heilmann
Rogers Hornsby
Joe Medwick
Al Simmons
Lou Gehrig
Cap Anson
Ted Williams
Ed Delahanty
Babe Ruth

That’s 18 other players, with some pretty damn big names.

by ShadowPenguin on Jul 22, 2009 5:22 PM MDT up reply actions

I'd like to point out

that all 18 are in the Hall of Fame

Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

by Redhawk on Jul 22, 2009 5:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Too bad none of them

played at Coors. Maybe I’m being pessimistic, and I don’t know who will be the BBWAA voters whenever Helton is eligible but I just see him getting slammed for being a Rockie unless he puts up another 4 seasons like the one he’s having this year. Sigh

If you set the bar at 330

you end up wiith 5 Hall of Famers…and Todd within striking distance. You don’t end up with any additional marginal talents.

I feel ya...

I just got home from work and got on the Row expecting to see the pitching match ups for todays game, figuring it would start at 7:05 because that is the most common time to start our home games.. too bad. I guess as long as they won its alright but I feel like I really would have enjoyed waching Heltons 500th 2B.. I remember where i was sitting and watching the game when Biggio got his 3,000th hit against us. Theres something about watching milestones reached live that are so memorable, its like a flashbulb memory.

All Hail The Toddfather!

I could not be happier for #17. And for the Rockies. I try very hard not to overstate the importance of one win over another, but I really did feel that this game was pivotal in the playoff chase. Winning this series was just something I felt we really had to do with the Giants coming in for the week-end.

The atmosphere at Coors will just be electric come Friday night. I’ll be there on Saturday, and can hardly wait. Go Rox!

Free Seth Smith, damnit!

I'll be at Saturday's game too

Third year in a row for me and Squeaky, it was better when there were fewer people there. I’ll be the girl in the Greg Reynolds shirt (I credit it for our win today. :P)

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

Fantastic game

First win I’ve seen in person. Beautiful day for ball at 20th and Blake, and huge thanks to Roberbola, who graciously let Squeaky and I use his terrific tickets in section 135, 25 rows back of the screen. We WON a series against the Dbacks (be still my heart) and it was great to be there for Todd’s 500th. He got a great ovation, and the noise Coors made when he hit that homer is one of my favorite things in the world. Huston did his bit to finish it off, and we’re in a pretty good position for the Giants. I can’t believe our luck in missing both Haren and Lincecum. Which means…

Go Rockies!

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

No, seriously, he did, on Baseball Tonight. It was hilarious.

LOL I was just watching that!

Baseball Tonight did a decent coverage on the Rockies..talking about our pitching (namely Ubaldo Jimenez), defense (namely Iannetta, Dex, and Tulo) and hitting (namely Helton and Hawpe). And then to put the cherry on top, Kruk comes out and says hey these guys have a nice chance at winning the Wild Card!! That pissed me off lol..3 weeks after saying we had no chance he takes it all back. Ugh. Pathetic

by CentralCaliRox on Jul 22, 2009 5:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Wow....

The Rockies are discussed on ESPN, What’s next — I’ll turn on sports radio in Denver and hear someone talking about the Rockies?

Nah…. that’s too unrealistic.

by BroJB on Jul 22, 2009 5:32 PM MDT up reply actions

It's the local guys that really get me ...

I would like to see move coverage on national media outlets like ESPN, but that isn’t what bothers me at all. Listening to 104.3 and the local sports talk hosts drives me up the wall. I don’t know what bothers me more, them ignoring the Rockies 95% of the time, or the 5% of the time they spend complaining how the Monforts won’t spend enough for the Rockies to be good in the future. Far be it to spend any time of the Rockies right now, talking about their strengths, their depth, possible trades, etc. Just a vent :)

P.S. It was 10x worse even in 2007 prior to and during the Rockies run. I can’t remember how many times Joe and Jim reminded us that the Rockies were irrelevant, that we were just passing time before Broncos season, the Rockies would never make the playoffs with the current ownership, etc. It made Rockober especially sweet. I think maybe 104.3 has an agenda to keep people from listening to 850 for the games, so that’s why they don’t hype up the Rockies. Maybe I’m just paranoid.
