Manny Corpas to have surgery, miss at least August (or, Jhoulys Chacin's exit took this over)
The Denver Post broke the story that Manny Corpas will undergo surgery here. Renck offers Joel Peralta, Randy Flores, and Matt Herges (the usual suspects) as possible replacements.
If you're wondering who will perform the surgery, Thomas Harding reports that it will be the Rockies' medical director, Dr. Thomas J. Noonan.
Who do you want to join the faltering bullpen?

Deduno/Chacin/Rogers
have been my favorite choices for a while now. I wouldn’t mind a trade for a decent reliever, but at the same time hate to see much talent shipped off for only a few months of a pitcher who has been over performing this season so far.

is Chacin on the 40 man yet?
I think Deduno and Rogers are

Chacin may not be
but spots can be opened up. Embree can go to the 60 day DL, unless they really think he is coming back this season. I know he says he may, but I would not count on it.

No need to start his clock
especially when Rogers and Deduno are already on it. I think in terms of a relief role,Chacin’s profile is least exciting. Deduno would only have to work on his mad cutter and curveball in relief, where Rogers could also start pumping gas to balance his big biter. Chacin is best when he’s mixing all three pitches to get hitters off balance, as well as working to get groundball outs. His traits play up because of his durable build and workhorse like approach to pitching. He’d be a fine reliever, but the other two seem to have skill sets that could go further in that role.

Even if the reliever is under contract for next year
relievers are so vulnerable to alternating good and bad seasons, trading anyone with a real future in our organization would not be wise. Many/most relievers are just failed starters, why not introduce our young guns to the MLB in the pen, like Joba Chamberlain with the Yankees, Wainwright with STL, or Price with TB over the past few years.
by realmenwearpurple on Jul 22, 2009 6:53 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Deduno
I like Rogers better, but he might help more as insurance in AAA for JDLR and Hammel. Deduno is 26 and probably faces no better time than now to convert to the position he was inevitably going to fill, and go ahead and enter Colorado’s bullpen. Deduno is on the 40 man roster and would required no additional move.
Rogers is a better pitcher, but still very well could be called upon to start should an injury arise. May have more of an impact as a starter both this year and next.
Chacin still has more to learn in AA, is not on the 40 man roster, and has more value as a starter still. Obviously a bullpen role would be temporary, but it’s not necessary yet.
I like Deduno first, but if they are going off the 40 man roster, I’d like Escalona before Herges.
by David OhNo on Jul 22, 2009 6:55 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Deduno would be my first choice
for the same reasons you point out. Chacin and Rogers are other possibilities, but yes Deduno would be choice #1.
by realmenwearpurple on Jul 22, 2009 6:57 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
What about Hynick?
He may be another possibility.
by mkorpal on Jul 22, 2009 6:58 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
To similar to others in the pen.
The bullpen likely won’t help him add much to his fastball, and he’s a pitch variety guy, not a master of one-two elite pitches. Maybe he could become a Justin Duchscherer type, but that’s less likely than a guy like Deduno or Rogers using their power offerings to better success.
by David OhNo on Jul 22, 2009 7:01 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
That may be.
Rogers is starting right about now. So, we’ll see if they pull him too.
by mkorpal on Jul 22, 2009 7:04 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also
you can’t rule out bring up Chacin and using him as a starter and sending Hammel back to the pen.
by mkorpal on Jul 22, 2009 7:08 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
To expound on this
it’s not that Hammel has been poor, it just would represent an aggressive shift by management to put its talent to use when it needs them. It would show that they wouldn’t be afraid to use Deduno, Escalona, or Rogers if they saw the need down the stretch. If you aren’t going to trade for elite talent, procurring it is the next best thing.
by David OhNo on Jul 22, 2009 7:20 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thats true.
Lets also not forget how much bringing up Jimenez and Morales helped in 07. If they feel Chacin is ready to make the leap, and feel that it won’t hurt him, than I’m all for it.

put up numbers in the pen similar to Taylor.

I can only do this year, or the 3 previous years on ESPN
For this year, he has a 2.7 ERA as a reliever and a 4.38 ERA as a starter. Granted, the reliever part is a very small sample size.
by mkorpal on Jul 22, 2009 7:31 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
On BB-ref, definitely
You can choose a season, or career.
I assume we’re talking about Hammel. In 2008 he had the most pen work.
career:
starter: 5.62 ERA, 227.1 IP, 28 HR, 82 BB, 156 K
reliever: 4.68 ERA 75.0 IP, 11 HR, 38 BB, 52 K (48 games)
2008:
starter: 4.88 ERA, 27.2 IP, 3 HR, 12 BB, 15 K
reliever: 4.44 ERA 50.2 IP, 8 HR, 23 BB, 29 K (35 games)
Obviously nothing to write home about, but he’s pitched a lot better this season in general.

Well
it’s not a call up to AAA. They wouldn’t interrupt a start to do that. It’s either an injury, trade or he’s going to be wearing pinstripes tomorrow.
If it was a trade, it’d have been made prior to the start, you’d think. And if not, you’d assume the team we’d be dealing with would want to see him finish his start… Plus, the Rockies are generally gunshy about dealing pitching prospects.
I’m betting we’re going to see him in Coors.

by mkorpal on Jul 22, 2009 7:18 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It could be a trade close
talks occur at all hours, and if the Rockies felt one was getting close, they could pull him to protect him from injury. That would imply that talks were far enough along.
This is the least likely scenario, though.

-Not being on the 40 man but moving ahead of Rogers and Deduno is odd
-Rockies dealing an impact prospect is odd

What is the state of the AAA rotation?
Could it be that they’re calling up someone else from AAA, and they’re moving Chacin up? And maybe they pulled him because they want him to start there in the next couple days?
by holly96 on Jul 22, 2009 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let's see what happens with Rogers
he could be moving up, with Chacin taking his place. That might explain Chacin starting but then getting pulled, as he’d just pitch later in AAA, while Rogers stays fresh for an MLB debut.

I’m not promoting it persay:
-The Rockies need offensive consistency
-The Rockies have catching depth
-Chris Iannetta is slumping
-Martinez is the only offensive threat on the market at a position Colorado could “upgrade.”

Adam Bright, a lefty, warmed up to pitch at the start of the seventh. Before the inning started, he was lifted for Matt Reynolds, another lefty, without any indication of an injury.

Matzek would make him fourth
Friedrich is my top Rockies prospect as a Cliff Lee type potential talent. I passed Rogers over Chacin because I believe Jhoulys is more likely a poor man’s Jair Jurrjens than the 2007 Fausto Carmona I was hoping for. Rogers plus control and power heater, as well as a power curve that flashes plus but sometimes is average makes him a safer bet to be a major factor in the majors. I’ve been surprised by Rogers this year.
Matzek will top all once he signs.

plus, Rogers may still be thought of as a relief candidate and they may want to hold out longer on him before they make a decision.
by David OhNo on Jul 22, 2009 8:56 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rogers may be more advanced than Chacin
but Chacin is two years younger and by the time he’s 23, will be much better. Rogers was average when he was 21.

Not completely fair
as Rogers was a converted shortstop, making age comparisons a bit misleading.

Denver II
Guys in the dugout. Supposedly there is a post game meeting of players right now (don’t know if that’s unusual or not). He also said Andy Graham (who relieved Chacin) was warming up before the game started, so it sounds like it couldn’t have been an injury.

Might be the Cubs
their pitching is legit and deeper than the Giants, and that lineup really should be better; it has talent, unlike the Giants (beside Fat Ichiro)
by bballrox4717 on Jul 22, 2009 9:24 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't like the Braves
Jurrjens and Hanson are pitching over their heads, Lowe is old, and their bullpen is way overworked. Not to mention their lineup and defense are terrible.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 22, 2009 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Over their heads?
I don’t know about that. Hanson looks like the next big thing and was suggested to be as much before the start of the season.
by David OhNo on Jul 22, 2009 9:29 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hanson has dominating stuff
but rarely has shown great command with it. Who knows, maybe his last start is the beginning of a new trend, but if he pitches the same as he has so far, then that ERA is going to go way up.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 22, 2009 9:44 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
This sounds like what they say about the Rox
“Marquis, Hammel and DLR are pitching over their heads, Helton is old, Cook pitches pooorly in the second half, their bullpen is bad. Their defense has bad USR ratings and their line-up has some BAD batting averages.”
by realmenwearpurple on Jul 22, 2009 9:29 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't believe this btw
just repeating what I hear from local Mets/Sux/Yanks fans
by realmenwearpurple on Jul 22, 2009 9:30 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol
the problem is that they lag Garrett Anderson in LF, McLouth is widely considered to be overrated, and Church is feeling the effects of last year’s injury. They have very little power as a team outside of McCann and McLouth.
Follwing FIP, each of Jurrjens and Hanson’s ERA are over a run below their FIP.
According to Fangraphs, their lineup is almost bottom 10 in the MLB, and the defense is 3rd worst in the MLB in a ballpark that’s not the size of Rhode Island.

One other thought...
…If Embree is on the 60 day DL (who knows how bad his injury is), Chacin can be added to the 40 man, correct?

I know it's late
but my third hand buddy just called with a potential bombshell. Seems his friend (at the game tonight) just called him from some cowboy bar in Tulsa saying that forget to tell him that he asked one of the player’s wives after the game (apparently they all gather near the clubhouse door or something) if she knew anything about Chacin. She said the players were sworn to secrecy, that the Rox were going to announce something tomorrow morning, BUT, get this: she heard Chacin got a shaving-cream-pie-in-the-face tonight after the game!! Can’t imagine they do that for injured or traded players, so, again, it sounds like Denver. Fact or fiction, that’s all I’ve got.

Final odds, then bed
40% traded for George Sherrill
35% traded for someone else
25% call up

I accept that as a good trade BTW

Good lordy.....
I just want to know what is going to happen to Chacin…the suspense is killing me. Basically just restating what everyone else is thinking….also that this thread is pretty much the most hilarious thing I have encountered, at least today!

It's like this is the first time a prospect might be called up or dealt.
What a thread. :)

Wooooo!!!!! I found the bottom of the thread!!!
This is the most hilarious thread in a long while. If this is anything but a blockbuster trade or a callup, I’ll probably be laughing and crying at the same time.

Nice work everyone :)
Tomorrow, Chris Ianetta’s mum is spotted buying a pair of Seattle Mariners branded socks. Can we make it to 1000 posts?

Since it's an off day
yes, yes we can.

Depends
Whether the socks are the product of child labor, or whether Ichiro signed them, or whether he just bought them for….you guessed it….Jhoulys Chacin!

Here's to hoping Francis has a speedy recovery...

Still no update....
Though it has been reported in quite a few places. My guess at this point is that either Chacin is getting promoted to the majors or that someone in AAA is getting promoted and Chacin will replace their spot in AAA.
Still holding out hope for a Halladay/Frasor or Lee/Bentacourt type trade.

GOOD MORNING LOSERS!
Those that had “Call Up” on their pick sheets….look to be the Winna! Tracy Ringolsby at Inside the Rockies has this to say this morning.
There were indications that Jhoulys Chacin, the Rockies’ top-ranked pitching prospect, could be called up and moved into the bullpen to take Corpas’ place on the Rockies roster.
Unable to find a trade they are comfortable with for an expeirence reliever, the Rockies have shown a willingness to move a starting pitching prospect into a bullpen role.
Since I beat the Rockpile do I get credit for the scoop? And if all I’m doing is quoting the real person that has the scoop…I should still get some scoop credit right?

It sounds like he just said what we said all of last night
just speculation on his part
by mkorpal on Jul 23, 2009 8:09 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I'm afraid it doesn't count
If Ringolsby is just retelling what he read on the Row last night. Feedback loop.
by biondino on Jul 23, 2009 8:13 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
lmao
ok…first it’s Ringolsby…so even if he is just repeating what he read here on the that gives it much more credibility then we had last night. Like the business meeting where the pion suggests using FedEx shipping to save money…and then the CEO says they should use FedEX shipping to save money, and the table goes “Brilliant idea sir!”

DOD and the front office must be doing something a bit strange if they wont return Ringolsby’s calls. I still think there’s smoke here.

Hello Renck I know you are reading this blog! Get on the phones son….
by moomacher on Jul 23, 2009 8:25 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree....
However, the fact that today is an off-day has a lot to do with it. Rockies don’t need to announce anything till Friday, so they are bound to be a bit tight lipped until then need to be. With nothing else Rockies-related to report today, my guess is there’s going to be a lot of digging done in the next 12 hours.

Just joking.
