Interesting lineup

not thrilled about the idea of two largely dormant yet still struggling hitter near the top of the order. Looking at July numbers, Spilborghs is hitting .200/.273/.450 in just 20 ABs, and Atkins slightly worse at .208/.269/.250 in 24 ABs. I have no problem with them playing tonight, even if on a hunch, but I don’t care for their spots in the lineup. I especially don’t know why Atkins always hits clean-up in games he plays. Yeah yeah, splitting lefties, blah blah.

by David OhNo on Jul 24, 2009 5:41 PM MDT reply actions

This one is kind of odd.

I’m glad that the other side doesn’t have much weaponry, but it seems like we want to make this a lot closer than we have to.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 5:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Spilly is 3/6 off Cain, Atkins 12/27

Not trying to justify anything, as history is only in the past. Just pointing it out.

by Greg Stanwood on Jul 24, 2009 5:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Certainly an interesting wrinkle to this game

the Spilborghs numbers are a bit flukey, but the Atkins ones appear slightly more meaningful.

One thing that does handcuff Tracy a bit is that his three best middle order hitters right now, Helton, Hawpe, Stewart (I guess you could throw Smith in there too), are lefty and four back to back might be a bit much.

by David OhNo on Jul 24, 2009 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Why is Stewart a better middle of the order hitter than Tulo?

Tulo has teh same number of HR’s, and has a higher average?

by djmbluemoon on Jul 24, 2009 5:56 PM MDT up reply actions

First, I said right now

as Stewart and Helton have been the team’s best power source in the month of July. However, on the season, Stewart’s ISO is 40 points higher than Tulo’s, and after the fourth spot, pretty much power takes precidence.

by David OhNo on Jul 24, 2009 6:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Nice thing is

thanks to the randomness of a one game outcome, we could easily be fretting over nothing and watch Atkins and Spilborghs both park one on Cain, making Tracy again look like a genius. I do like that if they are going to use this defensive alignment, they are doing it in a Hammel start and not a Cook, Jimenez, or Marquis one.

by David OhNo on Jul 24, 2009 5:50 PM MDT up reply actions

It's appears

that Tracy’s saving Smith for late-inning PH duty

by WanderingRoxFan on Jul 24, 2009 5:48 PM MDT up reply actions

3 defensive downgrades?

Ugh. I almost forgot that Stewart played second. I can live with Spilly taking over the two hole from Barmes.

fun fact

Ian Stewart has a .182 BABIP at Coors Field this year

by The Lodo Magic Man on Jul 24, 2009 6:01 PM MDT up reply actions

definitely a fluke number...

The average BABIP at Coors is something like .306 last I checked.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 6:05 PM MDT up reply actions

his line drive rate for the season is only 15.6%

explaining some of that, but yeah it’s definitely due for an increase

by djmbluemoon on Jul 24, 2009 6:07 PM MDT up reply actions

That would still translate to at least .270

And at Coors it should be even higher than that.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions

my bad

according to fangraphs it’s actually 12.2%, my maths was out

by djmbluemoon on Jul 24, 2009 6:16 PM MDT up reply actions

I thought it was something like that

Everything about Stewart’s peripheral’s told me he had actually improved this year, and was getting extremely unlucky, but I didn’t that he got THAT unlucky.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 24, 2009 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions

So, if the Rockies need 39 more wins to get to the playoffs...

And they might not actually need 39 more wins, but that’s the safe number as none of those other teams are likely to get the 40+ that they’d need, where do those 39 come from? With a ten game road trip on the way after the Giants, it seems to me that we really need to at least win this series.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 6:04 PM MDT reply actions

we're currently 18-23 against the NL West

mainly due to the Dodgers, I think we need to be at least five games over .500 in our division come the end of the season

by djmbluemoon on Jul 24, 2009 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions

That ten game road trip is winnable though

We face the anemic Mets, the struggling Reds, but then we get the Philles. If we 5-2 against the Mets and Reds, then that series has less pressure, but I’d love to win that series. I have to say 7-3 is the reasonable goal on that trip. Plus, winning 2 out of 3, even sweeping the Giants seems to be very possible, so we may have a stretch of 9-4 or 10-3, putting us at a real advantage over anyone in the wildcard.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 24, 2009 6:14 PM MDT up reply actions

Up until Aug 24th

the schedule is a cakewalk. Only meaningful opponents our Giants, Cubs, and Philles, and we even get the Nationals in a series again. Pretty easy IMO.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 24, 2009 6:17 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah but 16 of those 27 games

are on the East Coast, where historically we’ve done badly

by djmbluemoon on Jul 24, 2009 6:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Most of the losses were under Hurdle though

We’re 9-8 against the east this year, and I don’t think we face the Braves again, unless they leap over Philly.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 24, 2009 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions

It is tough for West teams to travel East...

you see it in baseball and football a lot. Time change messes with everyone. It really hits hardest in the second or third game of a series.

by realmenwearpurple on Jul 24, 2009 6:58 PM MDT up reply actions

I see some traps there...

Winning a four game road series is never easy, even against the Mets, and the Reds can be dangerous every so often. Philly is of course tough. I’d love to win the road trip, but I’m thinking 5-5 might be what we’ll be looking at. If we take two against the Giants, that leaves us 7-6 heading into the seven game homestand against the Cubs and Pirates where I think we really can pick up some wins.

If we are able to take the road trip like you say, we could conceivably be 14-6 or 15-5 heading into the SFG/LAD/SFG run, and at that point the division might get back into play. That would be nice, but I’m seeing this scenario as unlikely. I think 12-8 over these next 20 will suffice to keep us on pace for 91.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 6:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually, the Reds are quite awful

Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips are their only threats in the lineup. Hanigan’s pretty good, but outside of that, their offense is dreadful. I’d watch out for Cueto and Harang, but they give up lots of homers. As for the Mets, we have to face Santana, but other than that, they are even worse. We won’t see comebacks though; Cordero and KRod are naturally lights-out. I don’t think 5-2 is unreasonable ( a loss for each team ) and I agree with you that we won’t sweep anybody. We should win the series though, and winning in Philly is never out of the question. The goal should be 7-3, a series win for each city, and it wouldn’t kill to see 6-4, but 5-5 makes me shudder though, since we’ve been good on the road this year.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 24, 2009 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

The Reds won a series against the Braves last month,

swept the Snakes at Chase Field and swept a series against the Astros earlier this season. They can be awful, but they can be dangerous. Still, I think we win that series but lose 2 of 3 in Philly. And again, while we’d like to win 3 of 4 against the Mets, probability and chance alone suggest it’s not going to happen as often as a split, even with the disparity between our two clubs. I don’t know if I’d be discouraged with 5-5. I will be discouraged if we let the Giants get anything better than a 3-7 on their current trip, though.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 7:00 PM MDT up reply actions

For the Philles series, it really depends on who we face pitching-wise

If we get, say, Halladay/Happ (if we goes there) and Hamels, then I agree with you that we will probably lose 2/3, but if we get Pedro/Lopez and Moyer, then there’s a good chance we win the series. There’s also the fact that they have been awful at home at times, and we should thankful we’re not facing them on the road. It’ll be like old Coors again for some of the Rockies hitters. No offense, but sweeping the Snakes doesn’t mean much, though I’ll give you the Astros and Braves. Why do you have such fears with the Mets?

by bballrox4717 on Jul 24, 2009 7:08 PM MDT up reply actions

This is true regarding the Phils...

It’s not a fear regarding the Mets, it’s just the rules of probability. Home field advantage is something like .536, you apply this to a .470 team like the Mets and the .464 road handicap against the Rockies, and you get a very even series for four games.

by Rox Girl on Jul 24, 2009 7:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Probability isn't everything you know

the Mets pre-June are tons worse than the Mets now, and they’re playing like a AAA ballclub.
