…would CarGo have played that any better? His offense isn’t enough for a corner slot, but it’s plenty for CF..
He didn't misplay it though, he was getting ready to lay out, and spills had him backed up
and then his cleat caught or something and he got tripped up
That was a double with jsut about any CF in baseball

Then why bother playing the game?
I mean, I’m all for giving the guy credit, but please. We’ve got to hit against good and bad alike if we want to get to the playoffs. If we want to win in them, we’ve got to hit against the good.
You play the game because they CAN beat him.
I tend to notice a certain favoritism by baseball fans in this regard. When the opposing pitcher pitches well, it’s out offense’s fault. When our pitcher pitches well, it is because our pitcher is good.
Sometimes, the pitcher just beats the offense. Cain’s not being great tonight, but he’s beaten better offenses than ours with less control.
Frankly, I believe the pitcher has far more control over the offensive production than do the hitters.

He’s usually much more in the zone than he’s been tonight. He’s also elevating more pitches than I’ve seen in most of his starts this year.

Cain is off, but he’s still Matt Cain. If our offense has failed us, it’s because they aren’t being patient enough. The lack of hits is Cain being Cain.

Honestly, I have to argue that those sorts of things are entirely subjective.
I’m not the type to say our offense “really isn’t that good” just because we blow a game against a good pitcher.
Cain’s “off” stuff is still better than 90% of the pitchers we’ve seen this season, and I, personally, am going to give him credit for his pitching (even though I hate him more than any other MLB player), because I feel that a good pitcher can legitimately beat any offense even with lackluster stuff.
I do not hold our offense completely free of blame, especially with their lack of patience. But sometimes, the pitcher is just going to beat the offense, even if it were the best offense ever assembled.

It's not entirely subjective...
I think you fall back on this too often in arguments and it muddies waters that don’t need muddied. In this case, it’s actually probably more true than usual but still, some of what’s going on tonight we can go back and look at objectively.
On to the subjective stuff, though, there’s not a lot different from his pitches in this start of his and the May 2 start when the Rockies got seven hits and scored five runs. The major differences between that game and this one seem to be that the Rockies haven’t been as patient (four walks then), they’ve run into outs and no Spilly HR’s. That last one I don’t know what we can do about, but there probably should be another run on the board. Cain’s good, but tonight we should be a little closer than we are.

It’s as clear as day, to me, that in the cases I mention this, it is because more often than not, there is no acceptable way of measuring what is being discussed.
The role of the pitcher in the offensive performance of a team is one such thing. I believe that the pitcher himself is more important in determining the offensive performance of a team than the actual offense is. Beyond that, offenses can be inconsistent, they can be susceptible to strengths and weaknesses, etc. As a result, it makes it even more impossible for an objective standard to be established. Therefore, there will be cases where a “good” offense will be humiliated by bad pitchers. We’re being humiliated by a good pitcher.
I am getting the vibe that many of the people in the thread are being a significant bit more irrational than normal. I know most sports fans feel more argumentative than normal in a game situation like this, but what’s the deal?

You need to be more aware of baseball analysis then,
Maybe we need to link more of this, because a lot of these things, including the role of the opposing pitcher in limiting the offensive performance of a team, can be measured objectively, and they’re only going to get more precise at that as tools like hit/FX start to come into greater use. Again, I can’t remember what it was you mentioned the other day that was subjective, but it was something that was even more clearly set to an objective standard than this.
I’ll drop it, I think you’re getting more frustrated with the discussion than I intended, but I’m not being irrational in looking at what’s going on here and seeing more than just Cain being good at play. If the Rockies do want to do well in the playoffs, and likely at some point if they want to get there, they will have to win against strong pitchers most nights. We have to find out why the offense is struggling to do that even at least half the time.
I do not claim to be a baseball analyst of anywhere near your calibur.

A team could be no hit by Josh Fogg and still be playoff caliber.

If you’re unwilling to do so because I need to be “more aware of baseball analysis”, then by all means, forget I even responded.

haha, I was great all the way through freshman year of high school as a starter.
But then I got Quintanilla’d, broke my thumb and sprained my ankle right before varsity tryouts. I didn’t really get any opportunities to prove my clutchness at that point….

I too was good going into freshman year
I started there and my sophomore and junior years I started JV (our varsity was pretty good and I wanted playing time). My senior year I sat and only got in during blowouts.

We should be glad. We had Hammel going, our usual bullpen trust issues, and we only gave up 3 runs. Pitching was solid for both teams, they just ended up with more hits.
