One of the most exciting days in my office in recent years was
when the new edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary arrived. A new edition of The Chicago Manual of Style arrived around the same time to similar celebration. How’s that for nerdy?

One of my favorite blogs just loves skewering the CMS
As you can tell by their whole section devoted to it. They have some pretty funny nerd snark in going about it.

I will have to check that out.

Just flipped over there
and read the “Carat, karat, caret (carrot)” entry. Hi. Freakin’. Larious. Will definately go back and read more another time. Very witty and very stylish. Thanks for the tip!

by Teekalong on Jul 27, 2009 8:07 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It wasn't even a strike,
I’m not sure where the big complaint is with the pitch selection. I want to look at the replay, though, because I wonder if Morales telegraphed it.
by Rox Girl on Jul 27, 2009 8:09 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I watched the replay 5 times
it was about 1 inch below the knee and right over the middle of the plate. A terrible choice for 0-2, and Frankie missed his spot badly. I mean, it was a wheelhouse shot.
by Teekalong on Jul 27, 2009 8:10 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's not a wheelhouse...
Never ever have I heard of an inch below the knee as being in a hitter’s wheelhouse.
by Rox Girl on Jul 27, 2009 8:12 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
he hit it on a full extension swing
in the sweet spot, and it was a no doubter. I mean, this was NOT some ball he chased. He took a massive uppercut and crushed it easily. how is that not wheelhouse? Morales shouldn’t be taking the fall for this game, but come on. Defending that pitch is ludicrous.
by Teekalong on Jul 27, 2009 8:13 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
That doesn't make it the wheelhouse just because he was able to bend
himself into getting good extension and hammering the ball. Now, if Tatis’ wheelhouse really is below his knees, than it was a stupid pitch, but something tells me you’ll be hard pressed to find other homers he’s hit from that location this season.
Looking at the replay, it was too far inside and still in a hitting zone. Not usually a homering zone. And given that he had a similar speed pitch just prior, his timing was going to be set for that. This was a bad decision by Iannetta. It wasn’t nearly as terrible a missed pitch as you’re making it out to be, though.
by Rox Girl on Jul 27, 2009 8:25 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
my initial point
was that the changeup was a bad call. I agree wholeheartedly that it was the wrong pitch to throw there. That said, I don’t see the argument at all that it was somehow still a good pitch. At the end of the day, I think the dude from major league sums it up best: “Who gives a crap, its gone.”
by Teekalong on Jul 27, 2009 8:33 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately, Morales didn't have a lot of options
He could give him high cheese and hope the changeup threw him off enough to get a K, but the possbility of a sac fly, and even a HR, seem higher. He needed a DP ball, and a changeup low and out of the zone is a pretty good bet for that, especially for a guy leading the universe in GIDP%. I’m not so sure I want to second guess the pitch call even though it ended up being the wrong one.

it was a meatball that was barely out of the zone. Tatis swung normally and caught the ball on the sweet spot easily.

your tv is different than mine then
it was close. a ball, sure. but not that far down. Whatever, what’s done is done. Would have taken a miracle to win after Rincon’s meltdown. But it was still a bad pitch. Not a luck shot.
by Teekalong on Jul 27, 2009 8:19 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
it definitely wasnt a luck shot
Seems to me tatis figured a young pitcher would try the same pitch he just used to make him look foolish. Either Franklin telegraphed it or tatis used the previous pitch to guess right, because he was ready to mash a low changeup. He prepped for it. You don’t often see such solid contact that low in the zone

Crap
Can they send Rincon to AAA tomorrow? Making him rent a car and drive to Colorado Springs from NY? I don’t ever want to see him pitch the 8th again. He’s channeling Jorge Julio at his worse.
by ddavis539 on Jul 27, 2009 8:05 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Someone remind me why
we didn’t have Betancourt in for the 8th? He didn’t pitch yesterday, he’s way better than Juan Freaking Rincon, and Franklin doesn’t work well out of the stretch. That was about as pleasant as having a pile of bricks drop on my head.
by coolopotamus on Jul 27, 2009 8:05 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that's fairly orthodox
to save the setup guy for a lead, or possibly the bottom of the 9th in a tie game.
Rincon in a tie game in the bottom of the 9th would be just too nerve wracking.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
by FooMan on Jul 27, 2009 8:09 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
But you'd bring in your closer in a tie game in the ninth.
Why not have your setup guy in the 8th?
by coolopotamus on Jul 27, 2009 8:12 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
In a home game
A lot of managers (not just Hurdle) wouldn’t bring in the closer in the bottom of the 9th in a tie.

by FooMan on Jul 27, 2009 8:35 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the worst part was that we had Daley warming in the pen during the 7th
There was no reason to put Rincon in this game at all, and Tracy effing knew it. This is why Speier should have stayed in over Rincon when Betancourt was added to the roster, because even though Rincon has better stuff, Speier can actually get groundballs with it and throw strikes, unlike the ***hole.
I think we’re saving Betancourt for leads in the 8th or tie games in the 9th by the way.

I would have to disagree
Not saying he was awful, but he was hardly as sharp tonight as we’ve seen him recently. And he was flirting with that 2 Out devil again tonight. Started to nibble a bit once he got 2 outs, which has been a problem for many on the pitching staff the last couple of seasons. Eventually, the Rox have to stamp out that mentality. How, I don’t know.

it was a tie game on the road. I don’t know what fangraphs will say, but I suspect our odds were not good. He was brutal, but its not like we’re locked in to win if we went with Daley or whoever.
