Trade Targets
Pitchers who appear to be on their radar include Baltimore’s Mark Hendrickson and Washington’s Joe Beimel.
Hendrickson apparently is doing better in the bullpen than he did in his 7 starts (where he mustered just a shred above 28.0 innings accumulated). Beimel has been somewhat average, a shade above according to tRA.

A very sincere congrats to Josh Willingham and the Nats.
I kept waiting for “despite the fact that Willingham hit two grand slams, the Nats still lost just because they can’t seem to win.”
i like willingham
but Washington needs to trade off anybody hitting worth a damn, including: Adam Dunn, Nick Johnson, Josh Willingham.

The interest in Hendrickson & Beimel
stems less from the belief that they’re really good, I think, than the fear that the Rox’ bullpen (Street & Betancourt excluded at this point) is inconsistent or just plain awful. Mediocrity can be a step up.

Tracy's comments
suggest that he didn’t make the call, though he didn’t (as far as I know) lay the blame anywhere. He did call it a poor choice. Which it was.
I've noticed CDI looking more towards the dugout..
in high leverage situations. Usually he calls his own pitches, and in North Carolina was one of two catchers that was ever allowed to call pitches by UNC coach Mike Fox.

I have high hopes for him
but I see his appearances so far as mixed. He’s been walking a lot of batters.
I still wonder why he didn’t start the 8th, since he pitched the 8th in a tight game the day before. The first reason I thought of was what I typed in the other thread, that maybe they’re still being really careful about back to back outings. But maybe the Wright AB was foremost on Tracy’s mind and he wanted a right-hander?
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
As everyone is saying sometimes a guy just hits a good pitch
look at Tulo, that pitch he hit out was a borderline pitch out based on location and he hit that out. I would’ve liked to see him get beat on a fastball instead, but it happens. Regardless I don’t like Morales in a bases loaded situation like that. I would mich rather see him to start an inning or needing just 1 out and facing a left handed hitter. I am hoping last night was an end to seeing Rincon in any type of close situation late in a game. I think Chacin may be that guy in a couple weeks, but he needs some more appearances first.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I wonder where Tatis likes the pitch
Tulo likes those high pitches and seems to connect when he’s going. I wonder if Tatis likes the low ones, or if he just had a good swing.
And you’re right, when they walked the bases full and brought in Morales, I was nervous due to Morales’s occasional wildness.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Actually
Remember Morales was going to face Sullivan (a lefty) and Manuel pulled him for Tatis AKA Mr. Grand Slam.

I didn't understand the move
to bring in Morales when there was a good chance of a pinch hitter batting righty….
Tatis had been a DP machine and wasn't hitting lefties much that year

by TuLoRocks2008 on Jul 28, 2009 12:44 PM MDT up reply actions
This is my point
he was facing someone like Sully who would likely be PH for, so it wasn’t a lefty for sure and he needed to get 2 outs, so thats pretty tough. I also have a good friend at work that is a Mets fan and he said the same thing, Tatis has hit into a ton of double plays. It happens, looks like the curse of the Mets is in full effect.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
We need another lefty in the bullpen
We have one in the ’pen, and 1 in the rotation. We only have two lefties on the team.

The Mets too have a delusion that they are still contending
and they too, would ask for outfield help like Murton.

It would take more than Murton
Otherwise you do it in a second.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Arthur Rhodes, if the Reds are selling
they would almost definitely ask for Murton though. Their outfield is the worst in the MLB, and they have the delusion that they are still contending.
I like Rhodes though, he’s been death to lefties throughout his whole career, is even killing righties right now, and succeeding in the Red’s bandbox, but he has value to the Reds, unlike Beimel, who is just going to walk after the year’s over to get away from hell, so he could be had for less.

yea that would be good too
wouldn’t mind giving up Murton…he has no spot here and seriously the Reds need to realize they are not contending

I don't think you realize Murton's real value
He would be a few team’s starting left fielder (cough cough Reds cough cough) and a good 4th outfielder on other teams. He’s cheap and he has a good track record in the MLB.

But he isn't worth 20 innings of them, you're missing the point
I think a Craig Baker for Rhodes/Feliciano trade would be great. Baker has been dominating the minors the past two years but is blocked by Reynolds/Escalona/Alburquerque. He’s a good arm with a chance of making the majors, and any other team would probably have him in Double A right now, so him being 24 doesn’t mean much.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 12:59 PM MDT up reply actions
nobody will take him
for a Rhodes or Feliciano they would definitely take Murton why do we have to keep him toiling away in AAA when we can get a solid RP for him idc if it is only for like 20 some innings it is worth it…is Murton ever going to be a big piece in our puzzle? No
we seem to have gotten over that HURDLE
by TuLoRocks2008 on Jul 28, 2009 1:22 PM MDT up reply actions
Nobody will take Baker?
While he’s old for his level, his dominance of Modesto lately shows he should be in Tulsa, and if he continues his K’rates, he should transition with his stuff into the majors. He’s still a prospect, and it’s not like he has bad stuff, his pitches are pretty good actually. He has the upside of being a solid reliever in the majors.

I can't imagine
we’d hesitate for a second to ship Murton for a player that could help us. I sincerely hope we wouldn’t.
I just hope it isn't a 38 year old lefty
why would we trade someone who could be a good 4th outfielder for us if he got playing time for 20 innings of an aging reliever who is going to walk next year and may not perform for us?
It’s not like we’re trading an unproven prospect, this is a guy we all know can perform in the MLB.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 12:47 PM MDT up reply actions
do we even have any control over Murton
over the next year or more? I don’t know, I have nothing against him but barring a move of Spilborgs I cannot see him playing for us at all in the near future (and even then, he’d only be a PH candidate). I’d much rather have a 38 year old reliever (or whoever) that can help us in a playoff run than a redundant AAA OF that has no real place in the organization. He might not be an unproven prospect as you say, but he’s far, far from a proven MLB guy either.
"but he’s far, far from a proven MLB guy either."
He thrived in Chicago when given the starting job, but knowing the system in Chicago, expensive free agents get priority over homegrown guys, so naturally, Soriano was given the job over Murton, who was then used in the Harden deal. Oakland was too involved with their own outfield prospects, and Murton blew his shot there, so he was traded for Wimberly. In what he’s shown us this year, Murton can flat out rake at times (he was a good in the backup outfield job) but CarGo was given favor over him. Murton is our only outfielder in AAA who can take over in an injury or trade situation. He’s valuable depth in our system that lacks talent in the outfield at the upper levels. Trading Murton for Rhodes, then losing say, Hawpe next year to an injury (which is completely possible) is the kind of situation that screws teams over. If we had outfield depth in the upper levels in the minors, sure, but Murton is the only depth we have.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 1:34 PM MDT up reply actions
while I don't necessarily agree
with your love for Murton, I don’t have a problem with him either. I’m fine with good depth, obviously. But he’s been a pro since 2005, my question is: do we even have him beyond this year? I honestly don’t know. And even if we do, is adding a bullpen piece more valuable than having a 6th OF? I’d argue no, maybe there’s some disagreement. I doubt Murton is seriously in the plans for a replacement for Hawpe too. Whatever, not trying to get into it here, it just seems to me that he’s a guy we should definitely move for value if its possible, which I’m not sure is true.
I'd guess out of options
Murton must surely be out of options after this year. Next year should be the last slave (pre-arb) year.
I have a hard time believing anyone would trade something of value for him. (A useful MLB reliever, to be specific.)
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by CentralCaliRox on Jul 28, 2009 12:28 PM MDT reply actions
Gotta treat yesterday
like striking out badly in the first AB of the day…its over, nothing to be done about it, but gotta do something positive next time up.
That said, its frustrating that Ubaldo is pitching very well but we aren’t getting results with he is on the hill. The Rox are 8-12 when he starts the game, which is discouraging, but then you note that the Rox have scored 3 runs or less in 10 of those losses. (The 3-0 game in April is the only time this year we’ve won when scoring 3 or less for him). Other than those two early Dodger games where he got shelled, he has put us in a position to win pretty much every time out and the guys with the sticks are letting him down.
Marquis has been great this year at winning key games, let’s keep it rolling tonight. I’m scared of the 15ks that Santana is going to ring up on Wed, so we need this one…

Marquis has been a stopper for us all year
they will beating groundballs into the ground all day.
I seriously do think we all underestimate Wednesday’s matchup: Hammel becomes this amazing pitcher on the road and Santana has been struggling lately, the no Berkman Astros crushed him last week.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 12:55 PM MDT up reply actions
its true
that Santana has had some rough outings lately and his Ks are definitely down over the last few months, but he’s likely to get in a groove at any given time and he’s gotta be licking his lips about getting it on against our high K lineup. I like Hammel just fine on the road, but he’s vastly, vastly overmatched here.
True, we do strikeout a lot
But the majority of our lineup can rock lefties at times; Fowler, Barmes, Atkins, Tulo, Iannetta, Spilly, and Hawpe all are great against lefties, and all can knock a homerun at any given time.. Besides, we are the most patient team in the league, so high K Santana will most likely have 100 through 6 if he actually does do good. (Strikeouts = even more pitches) We were hitting Ollie and the Mets pretty hard last night, we just couldn’t cash in the runs when it mattered.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 1:09 PM MDT up reply actions
I think
we do have a shot against Santana, I’m not conceding the game but I’m just not going to hold my breath on it either. We haven’t exactly lit up elite pitchers this season. Perez ain’t the same guy.
I know we just say ZOMG Rockies win all the time
but it bugs me when everyone thinks holy **** Johan Santana and concede the game there, when it can easily be a winnable game for the Rockies. Santana hasn’t been exactly lights out this year since the end of May. He was an awful pitcher in June and this last Astros start could be a run another bad starts for Santana. Besides, Hammel is pitching on the road against a terrible offensive team. He doesn’t have blow up innings like Jimenez and can go deep enough into the game to get the ball handed to Betancourt/Street.

Pebbles?
I know the big club is the story, but what’s happened to minor league reports?
What are you comfortable looking at or for?
The trouble with the Ghosts is that the best prospects on the team (Nolan Arenado, David Kandilas, etc..,) are so far away from contributing that to most casual fans they are going to be underwhelming. If you’re heavy into scouting and projection, look at these guys and see what they can become rather than what they are. If you’ve got difficulties with that, you might want to sort of ignore them and take a look at the more polished hitters, most notably Jared Clark and Eliezer Mesa. Both have at least some shot of becoming legit MLB prospects.
For pitching, I’d really try and work in Chris Balcom-Miller, because he’s experiencing a level of success there we don’t often see (Brandon Hynick and Jhoulys Chacin were the last two Casper starters as successful) and I’m really curious as to what he’s doing to perform so well. Given that company, it’s a really good sign that he’s a legitimate prospect.
Interesting..
Barmes is batting 8th tonight.
Today’s lineup:
1. Dexter Swing the damn bat Fowler
2. Seth Late Night Smith
3. Todd Mr 500 Helton
4. Brad Always swing at the first pitch Hawpe
5. Troy Mullet Tulowitzki
6. Ian Slumping Stewart
7. Chris Dreamy Iannetta
8. Clint Stay away from deer meat Barmes
How is Stewart slumping?
He’s 1 for his last 8, but is at .274 / .400 / .548 in July, with 13 walks and 13 K’s in 75 PA. His K rate (17.3% of PA’s) is way down compared to the rest of the season (25.5%).
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
It might just be me..
But I have high hopes for Stewart in the second half and I expect him to have a big half. It felt like he was slumping..mistake on my part.
