Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

owners say no more money

According to a report on FOXSports.com, the Rockies are struggling in their search to find another southpaw to complement Franklin Morales.

The Rockies are having a hard time finding pitching at a reasonable cost, both talent-wise and financially, after taking on the $1.1 million due to Rafael Betancourt last week. That is a pretty sad statement of the Rockies. We are in the thick of a playoff chase and the owners can't pony up a little bit of cash? You want more fans to come to games, show more of a dedication to winning. I'm not saying overpay for anyone.......but come on man. Next thing you know we will be hearing how we have become sellers.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

You forget

that the Rockies management already added over $7mil dollars of payroll this year, a 9% increase in a down economy and after a disappointing season in 2008. They are also paying Hurdle not to work for them and just added the $1.1mil for Betancourt that you just mentioned for what will probably amount to about 20 innings of work for the rest of the year. Not to mention starting Chacin’s service clock early for the sake of bullpen relief.

I daresay they are showing the fanbase and the club that they are serious about winning and have made significant financial steps towards proving this point.

Well, lets run through what we spent

We spent a good 2 million on Embree, added about 5 million by getting rid of Vizcaino but adding Marquis’s salary, we had arbitration raises for Atkins, De la Rosa, Barmes, and Buchholz, and we took on Street’s salary. We also took off Holliday and Fuentes from the payroll, saving a ton. Now, we’re having Marquis’s salary off the books, Embree, Torrealba, and Betancourt have an option, we have the ability to cut Atkins this year, though Street, De la Rosa, Barmes, Tulo, Spilly, Corpas, and Iannetta are due for raises. Most likely, Spilly will be traded this offseason, the Rockies have to consider trading Barmes, all of the options will be declined, Marquis won’t be offered arbitration, and Atkins will be cut.

Also due for raises for 2010

In addition to your list: Hammel (likely arb-eligible), Hawpe ($2M), Corpas ($2M), Francis ($2M), Jimenez ($0.5M).

Oh well

I like this team. They can get the job done. A LOOGY would help but it’s okay, our ownership has proven to us fans that it is dedicated to winning.

by CentralCaliRox on Jul 28, 2009 4:24 PM MDT reply actions

For the record

I think the Rockies should trade for a LOOGY and take a chance with the cash. Just having Franklin Morales as the only lefty in the pen isn’t going to work when he has a set up job to help with, and Flores shouldn’t belong on an MLB team at this point.

For the record, Rhodes and Beimel make 2 mill in total this year, Feliciano makes 1.6 in total, Hendrickson 1.5 in total, Sherrill 2.7, Grabow 2.3. (I don’t know how much is remaining on any of their deals) It seems that Feliciano or Hendrickson would make the most sense in financial terms, so should Feliciano be the target? Right now the Rockies have connected to all the relievers above except Feliciano.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 4:41 PM MDT reply actions

Right now, if we need money, then the best option for the Rockies would be

to trade Atkins (who I personally do not want to get rid off) or Torrealba, who is making 3.75 million this year, then call up Paul Phillips/Edwin Bellorin. Say if the Rockies eat at least 2 million off the contract in a possible trade, would they A) Have any takers and B) Have enough money to trade for a LOOGY?

I like Torrealba, but he is expensive and replaceable because of Phillips, Bellorin, and even McHenry, who seems destined to be the backup catcher of the Rockies.

by bballrox4717 on Jul 28, 2009 4:48 PM MDT reply actions

And other teams will take Torrealba and his salary why, exactly?

And clubs who have cheat, talented pitchers on their staff will trade them to us why, exactly?

If we trade Atkins but are forced to eat his salary – as would seem inevitable – we won’t be any better off financially! Your desires are mostly flights of fancy with no base in reality, but you post them like they’re serious. I don’t get it.

by biondino on Jul 28, 2009 5:01 PM MDT up reply actions

Catching is one hell of a position to fill.

I never said that the team would’ve to give us cheap pitching, more or less like a move like we did Baker, but for something I said we would eat about half the salary, so we would have about a million left for a LOOGY. A taker could be team like the Cubs who have one catcher on the roster because of an injury. The Rockies have shopped Torrealba, but they didn’t have any takers because of the salary issues.

“Your desires are mostly flights of fancy with no base in reality, but you post them like they’re serious. I don’t get it.”

Way to put in an insult there. Give me a few examples? From what I’ have remember posting on the site, I’ve said I would like the Rockies to trade for Beimel, for EY2 to start sometime, and for Fowler to sit for a while due to change his approach to the plate so that he could strike out less. Of course I’m a little serious about them, otherwise I wouldn’t post them, but it’s not like I could make anything I said happen. They’re what you said: desires.

Bad Catching is actually pretty easy to fill

there are a ton of AAAA catchers that float around every year for several years in their careers. The Rockies have 2 in Fasano and Phillips, and Bellorian is getting into that category as well. AND they are cheaper usually league minimum contacts

The problem with the Rockies not adding any more payroll…is that is also the problem with about 20 of the major league teams. If both want to get cheaper, then it’s impossible to make a trade.

Yorvy plays at jussssssssssssssssssst above replacement.

0.1 WAR to be specific.

So yeah, there’s a lot of catchers who could be Yorvit and muchmuch cheaper. Like Danny Ardoin.

Like the PCL stats mean anything this year

which is very odd. It seems that AAA, specifically the PCL is further from the big leagues in terms of talent, then I can remember

Unless we are talking about EY2…and his numbers are all legit (in fact I think they are too legit) of course.

Common everyone….it’s Wednesday morning the Rockies are down….you need to dance with lines cut in your hear like Tulo!

esp. places like the Springs and Albuquerque

given the altitude, they’ve always tended to be more higher octane parks of PCL. Prob. Salt Lake City, too.

Ardoin

It was kind of fun that year he got a bunch of starts. The team wasn’t going anywhere, and he wasn’t much of a hitter, but he sure could play the position.

I had a friend that went to Spring Training

when Ardoin was on the team. She was a very smart baseball girl, not your air head “david wright girl” fan at all. When I asked about ST and did any of the players stand out, the first thing she said was, “Danny Ardoin is very pretty”
