Thanks Clint!!
watching clint barmes progress through the minors, i admired his ability to play the infield and make solid contact. however, watching him live and being ignorant to his stats, i failed to notice his free-swinging approach and his inability to hit with RISP. now that i've become a stats enthusiast, particular SABRMETRICS, i realize his flaws. The only other players i can compare barmes to are vlad guerrero and jeff francour. patience is a virtue...79 strikeouts compared to his 19 walks... more 0-2 counts than any player in baseball. he isnt todd helton therefore he cant hit 19 foul balls in an AB. the rockies with say orlando hudson, probably competing for a division title. its annoying im the only one who sees this. wtf?
by the way.. clint barmes flied out to short right center field with the bases loaded and two outs tonight...TWICE!!! This led to jason marquis, who albeit is an above average hitting-pitcher, to lead off an inning. As the number 8 hitter in a National League lineup it is Your responsibility to make sure this doesn't happen. Oh and he also made a costly error which could've been a double play but was instead a crucial miscue allowing runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Thanks Clint!

Read and realize what?
That Barmy had a bad game or that you either did not see his terrific performances earlier in the Rockies’ return from the grave, or have chosen to ignore them.
As for your affinity for Sabermetrics, I have a nagging suspicion that a more knowledgeable Rowbot than I will have more to say.
Free Seth Smith, damnit!
Sigh.

UGGGH ROCKHEAD
i have watched probably 99% of rockies games this year. i watched barmes (as well as hawpe, holliday, atkins, francis, cook to name a few) progress through the minors. Don’t question what I’ve seen.. look at the stats and understand. Hope you realize barmes will be gone soon
Bruce, I forgot to give you props for "Don't question what I've seen"
In a forum of discussion, argument, and counter-arguement: well said.

As much as I was going crazy when Barmes failed today, and that I'm a start Eric Young Jr fan
You’re overreacting. A defensive mishap was bound to happen with him sooner or later, and while Barmes was a big reason for the loss today, it wasn’t just his fault.
While Sabermetrics rate him as negative batter, he’s WAY on the positive on the fielding side, and that’s what giving me pause when I want EY2 to start. And for someone who watches 99% of the games, you should see some of the sick defensive plays he makes,
As for the Rockies with Orlando Hudson, the Rockies were having serious financial issues and probably wouldn’t have traded for arguably our second best pitcher this year (Marquis) because of the cost. We were interested, but he cost too much.
good point bballrocks
I agree that Barmes is an above-average 2nd baseman. He’s made plays when we’ve needed him to however his range compared to an Ian Kinsler, Pedroia, Cano, Zobrist, and even Utley, just doesn’t work. Sure he made 2 good plays to save runs against the Giants over the weekend, honestly i could’ve made those but OK, good job Barmes. He needs to be more patient at the plate. Especially with 2 outs and the pitcher on deck. Sure, it’s Tracy’s fault for putting him in the 8 hole, but still, Iannette walked twice to load the bases, Barmes then flew out to short right. He doesnt produce with runners on and seems to swing at everything that looks somewhat hittable. Notice all his homeruns are to Right Field. He’s a dead pull hitter with limited power. If you need someone to strikeout and ocaasionally get lucky, while providing decent defense at 2nd base, call me. Or any of the other 200 2nd baseman playing proball. Thanks bballrocks.
We don't need a star at second base, and Barmes is also one of the best defensive second baseman in baseball
We need someone solid who can make the plays. Here’s the thing about Barmes; he’s one of the streakiest hitters in baseball, but when he’s hot, he’s a damned good hitter. We are all complaining about him because he is in a horrible slump right now, and like Rincon last night, proved all of our worst thoughts about him right, so we are “all get rid of him now”. Just…..relax. Barmes is almost definitely our starting 2nd baseman for the rest of the year, and barring some injury or sudden loss of confidence in Barmes, it isn’t going to change. Even though I don’t like him, I’ve accepted that fact, and will gladly wait until EY2 pries the job away for him.

yeah... actually,
barmes’ range is pretty dang good, i think. he even had good range—not all-world or anything— when he was playing shortstop, so it’s plenty at second. but yes, if we can trade him for kinsler, pedroia, utley, et al, count me in.
You're not going to trade an average 2B for an All-Star franchise 2B in fantasy much less real life.

79 STRIKEOUTS to 19 WALKS!!! Thats the WHOLE season… not just tonight. I mean, don’t put it past Clint to strikeout that much in one night.. but he wont get the ABs. More 0-2 counts than any other player in baseball. Sure if he could foul off 19 pitches like Todd, then that would be acceptable. But he’s not. He looks at called 3 strikes more often than any other player as well. Needs to be more perceptive of the “zone”. Learn things people and defend your arguments with stats… not bullshit
You mean he didn't strike out 79 times Tuesday?

EY2?
my next blog will definately be about the productivity of seth smith. However, i should also post the 2nd baseman more qualified in the rockies organization than EY2. But in the mean time.. sure i’ll deal with barmes.. But f*ck. Take score of every game as i do and realize Barmes is a convert SS who is a liability at 2B and we could use a more useful 2nd baseman to fill that role
Okay, EY2 has several tools that can make him succeed at the big league level, like speed, patience, contact, upside
Who would you want to play 2nd base right now for the Rockies? Do you want us to give up the system for a 2nd baseman that has a big name? It seems like that you don’t trust any players that you don’t know and that you are fooled by several glamor statistics. You do know that Barmes is an insanely good fielder, or that he has been a legitimate power threat, and that half of his hits go for extra bases? Yes, he can’t hit breaking pitches and he doesn’t walk. It’s a big flaw in his game that I hate, but I deal with it because of his other tools. Players are not perfect. However, his hot streak was a big reason why the Rockies got back in it, and while I think that EY2 can become the better player, it’s not like Barmes is this worthless player that the Rockies have to send down, or needs to be replaced by a big name like Orlando Hudson.

liability at 2nd
Keeping score isn’t sabermetrics. Check Fangraphs, which lists Clint as the most valuable defensive 2B in the NL. Even with his slightly below average bat (not really a liability when he’s the 8th best hitter on the team), FG rates him as the 5th best NL 2B. Since you like sabermetrics and all.

I'm with the OP
Defense is WAY overrated when talking about offensive ineptitude. This was the same song with Car Go a while back. Barmes does what he’s supposed to on 2nd and rarely has an error, but tell me, how often does he make Web Gems or make a play that leaves you saying “Wow, I don’t know of a lot of 2md basemen that would have made that play”? Answer: not that often.
Tonight was the accumulation of Barmes offensive duds. Bases loaded TWICE and he flies out TWICE. Honestly though, that doesn’t even bother me as much as the way he goes about swinging at the plate. The guy is just plain awful! He swings on practically every first pitch he sees reguardless of weather or not it’s a strike. And most of the time he doesn’t even make contact.
I don’t know much about EY2, but at this point in time I would say he’d be worth a shot if he is doing well in the minors.
No web gems?
Did you miss Monday’s game in the 1st inning where Barmes made the incredible diving grab to throw out the runner on what was a single to RF for probably 25/30 2B in this league?

While I respectfully disagree with the author’s analysis of EY2, he makes several good points about Barmes being just fine.
Man, I never thought I would see the day in which I was defending Barmes.
Brad Hawpe and Chris Iannetta were horsecrap tonight too.
I eagerly await your post about how much they suck.
Actually, what I eagerly await is an ‘Ignore User’ option on SB Nation blogs.

At least Iannetta got on base
with a walk instead of swinging wildly at any pitch he sees. And Hawpes an All Star, he has done enough for this team already, give him a break.
by GoldenNugget on Jul 28, 2009 11:02 PM MDT up reply actions
Hawpe's slump has been just as bad as Barmes
and Iannetta hits just as much as Barmes, but has more power and walks more. Let me repeat: Barmes is fine, and there is nobody we can replace him with except EY2.
Calm down people, the sky isn’t falling because we played horrible against the Mets. It gives us a chance to see what’s really wrong and fix it. I seriously expect a team meeting from Tracy tomorrow and the team will respond just like it did after the last meeting.

WHAT!?
again.. i am bothered by the fact that every fan seems to defend barmes. OK think what you think its ok..thanks goldennugget for giving a realistic perspective
HAWPE AND IANNETTA? REALLY?
Iannetta walked twice to load the bases for Barmes.. what’d he do. Hawpe had 3 quality ABs shame on him for not driving in 8 runs so Barmes dudnt have the opportunity to fail. I love your ignorance Franchise. Read and learn
Wait, so Hawpe not driving in runs is OK, but Barmes isn't?
Yeah, he had a bad game, but you’re not really citing anything other than one bad game. Guess what? Albert Pujols has games like these. Babe Ruth did as well. What a bunch of bums!
All the fielding metrics support that Barmes is a very good defensive 2B. Just because he isn’t the BEST does not mean he’s a lousy 2B. Barmes has also posted a .770+ OPS in 3 of the 4 months of the season, and yeah, he’s slumping pretty badly right now. But with how good his fielding is, we’ll take a streaky bat.
I personally say put Barmes in the 7 hole, as his .199 IsoP plays well later in the lineup.
Just because we aren’t all fawning over you tearing apart a player, especially one that we’ve all discussed a large amount and come to a passable consensus (when he’s hot, he’s a solid bat, but his excellent fielding makes up for his complete lack of plate discipline), does not mean that we’re all blind and stupid. We follow and cover this team with a fine-toothed comb, and you constantly repeating “Read and Learn” isn’t driving your point in at all.
Franchise definitely comes on a bit strong, but you’re being just as insulting as he is.
I don’t say this often, especially not on this site, but lurk more.

I accept he’s a good fielder but hitting ability is worth twice as much in my book. Iannetta, most undervalued Catcher in the game. I like you questioning me. Respect my research though, if you have a problem, consult MLB.com, not me. Cause numbers dont lie
I'm the resident sabermetrics guy.
I write articles about the numbers that everyone gets bored with really fast.
Iannetta is my avatar and my first article on this site was how Iannetta’s ISO numbers make him a top-5 catcher in baseball, despite have a low batting average – it’s all about his OBP and wOBA.
You haven’t presented any research. You’ve told us that Barmes had a bad game and that you could field better than him. That’s not research. I’ll respect your research when you A. present it and B. respect the collective efforts on this site and the discussion and discourse we have about the Rockies’ players. I was going to leave this alone
But then, I’m not known around these parts for my restraint.
First, I love it how this guy claims he “told off” Tracy Ringolsby – only one of the most respected and knowledgable beat writers in the game – and wears it as some sort of badge of honor. I didn’t realize being a jackass gave you credibility.
Secondly, I love how he claims to be a new convert to “SABERMETRICS” and constructs his entire argument around OBP. That’s, like, the first page of the first chapter of Sabermetrics for Dummies, and I’m not seeing much evidence that he got any further past that. Certainly not to the section on fielding – the hell with sabermetric fielding analysis, this guy’s ‘scouted’ Clint and just isn’t that impressed! Certainly not by those two big plays he made in the hole the last two nights – why, this guy could have made those plays himself! Not only is he a sabermetric genius and a super scout, he’s also a great ballplayer, too? What the hell’s he still doing posting on the internet? Shouldn’t he be employed by some team that could save a lot of money if they had an infielder who could scout for them and make personnel decisions, too?
Thirdly, I really love how he’s already pimping his next article about Seth Smith, promising all us simpletons that we have no idea how good Smith has been. Not only do I love this because it’s proof that this guy has never read the site before, but I guarantee I can tell you what his argument is based on: OBP! The be-all end-all of sabermetric analysis. This guy claims he’ll “enlighten us on the OBP” with his Smith article. I can hardly wait.
Fourth, I love this line:
“If you need someone to strikeout and ocaasionally get lucky, while providing decent defense at 2nd base, call me. Or any of the other 200 2nd baseman playing proball.”
Obviously, blamb303 is Omar Quintanilla.
Fifth, “**** YOUR REPLY LINK” is the funniest post in Purple Row history. I think it was at that point where I started to think that maybe Omar was drunk while posting all of this.
Sixth, I love that his post near the top of the article titled “good point bballrocks” is actually lucid and worth debating. Of course, somebody challenged him, which then led to him calling the retorts “bull****” and getting progressively hostile over the course of the thread.
Seventh, I love that he’s arguing stats with RMN. That’s funny.

It seems like you have some personal vendetta against Barmes or something. You seem unwilling to consider other people’s point of view or even agree to disagree. Now I am not a moderator of this site but am a frequent poster. I think you will find people much more agreeable here no matter your point of view if you start treating other posters with respect. Which means stop using all caps and swearing in your posts. For me personally anytime some one swears in a debate it is hard for me to view that person as credible no matter whether their point of view is valid or not. I think this is true for the rest of us rowbots as well. We may not agree with him but I think we need to stop bashing him and only respond with appropriate responses.

Speaking of getting booted
blamb’s user name sounds pretty good for the sound you might hear when that happens. BLAMB! Almost onomatopoetic, actually….

I can see that you're committed to this sticking around here thing too.
Interesting strategy.

seriously though
intelligent discourse is well appreciated around here. You might hold off on fanposts until you’ve spent some more time reading and discussing in our standard threads, such as the daily rockpiles or the feature articles, so you can get a feel for how the site operates.

Reply links aren't like a rule to spite you.
They facilitate and organize discussion. They’re very helpful. To stubbornly not use them is just silly.
see Bruce
this is so much more organized now! Thanks for complying with that. It’ll really facilitate a more orderly conversation.

I find it hard to believe you'd be "scouting" Barmes, though
Even if you loved college baseball. The MVC isn’t exactly a known conference. What did you think of Jason Frome?
The only problem being there's no player you can't just Google.

True, but it shows how sophisticated a Google search a person's willing to go through
In this case, first result listed, Baseball Cube level of sophistication.

It fits so well, I like him more for it.
I just know that, deep inside, there’s a little guy just aching to Row with the rest of us.

I am sorry I missed this last night
Me being a defender of Barmes.
blamb, do you think Barmes will win the Gold Glove? Why, why not?
No
Mainly because he’s not a big enough name. Gold gloves consistently go to perennial all-stars, not necessarily the best defender at that position. Also hes not clearly the best defensive 2nd baseman in the national league. He makes good plays and has good range with a strong arm. Cant argue with that. He might win the Fielding Bible Award if he continues to show decent range. I wish he had a chance.. more rockies need attention when it comes to fielding..i.e tulo or hawpe
more Rockies need attentionwhen it comes to fielding
There ya go, now it’s correct.

I think Hawpe gets quite a lot of attention in the field
If a facepalm qualifies as attention.
(the man can’t half throw, though)
(do you use the expression “can’t half do something” in the States? To mean someone who’s brilliant at something?)
nah
we’d take that as “Hawpe cannot even half throw” suggesting that he can’t even muster up enough to make half of a throw.

Conversely, if you said "he's not half bad at throwing"
we’d consider that he’s decent.

The context is the same in both my example and yours, PF
Just phrased slightly differently – it’s the same rhetorical device. Perhaps only the latter is widely used in the US.
Actually – reading again – so to you it just means decent as in competent, quite good etc? To me it’s more than that – “surprisingly/appreciately impressive”, I reckon.
Yeah, "not half bad" would mean to me surprisingly decent.
Definitely not more than that, unless you can hear tone of voice when someone says it.
