D'oh! Murton "Among Trade Chips Who Never Lived Up to the Hype"
Ouch. I don't think Murton really belongs on this list. I don't think he was as heralded as some of the other guys at the time of the trade, and he was closer to being a throw-in than a major piece of that deal.

The article sort of ran out of steam
the first few were legit examples, but Capellan and Murton are odd fits, as Capellan started backsliding before the trade discussed, and as you say, Murton wasn’t that big a prospect at the time.
The article does help highlight a misconception about the term “top prospect.” Many of these guys may have been near their system’s “top prospects” but that was more an indictment on the system than it was praise for the player. Smith, Henson, and Reed fit this bill.

I think it has to be pointed out that the Cubs never really appeared to give Murton a fair shot. After he hit .297/.365/.444 in a full-time role in 2006, and .281/.352/.438 in a part-time role in 2007, the Cubs decided they’d rather have Fukudome out there and banished Murton to the minors. Murton developed into exactly the hitter his minor league career suggested he’d be; the problem was that the Cubs decided they’d rather pay Fukudome more money for inferior production. That’s not really his fault.
Murton has a career .353 OBP
BOY THIS GUY SURE NEVER PANNED OUT
