Rosenthal: Like it or not, it's time to welcome Manny back
quote:
"Let's not hear any hand-wringing or circumspect analysis about what the fans' embracing of Ramirez says about our society, the deeper meaning of it all.
I'll tell you what it means:
Fans are sick of steroid talk.
Fans just want to be entertained.
Play ball."
Rosenthal is right when he says fans are sick of Steroid talk, but his reasoning is flat out wrong. It's not because it's the "elephant in the room," but rather that we're sick and tired of those who tarnish the game.
They were sick of Manny in Boston, and were happy to see him go (despite his bat), myself included. He's bad for the game, regardless of his PED usage.

Rosenthal really annoys me
I’m not sure why, but I really can’t stand the guy. Maybe it’s because most of what he says/writes is BS (as in, a month ago, he said that the Nationals had fired Manny Acta and given Jim Riggleman the manager’s gig…uh, yeah, about that…). Maybe it’s because he doesn’t know how to present himself well on TV.
I don’t know. I just don’t like the guy.

Every game has its supremely talented players who are "difficult" in whatever way
And every sport is better for them. The problem arrives when they are better because they take PEDs. So I have to disagree that Manny was bad for the game when he was a drug-free (in theory at least) genius – he may well have been bad for the Sox but he proved pretty comprehensively he was good for the Dodgers. And, like it or not, hating the villains in sport is often as much fun as loving the team(s) you support.
I hope that drug-free (he’s got to be this time, right?) Manny has a huge drop-off in performance, agrees to be released from his huge contract*, and slides into retirement quietly and with any remaining dignity he has left.
*So why don’t baseball contracts have clauses that allow the club to terminate the contracts of players found guilty of drug abuse?
