I wonder
what it would take to see Seth Smith every day.
"Don't tell me about the world. Not today. It's springtime and they're knocking baseballs around fields where the grass is damp and green in the morning and the kids are trying to hit the curve ball." -Pete Hamill
Sometimes I wonder the same thing
Then again, it’s great to have his bat off the bench. If CarGo goes 1-4, but his defense is better than Smith’s, then I think you have to play Gonzalez ahead of Smith. I think Gonzalez will come around on the breaking balls (he showed some improvement over the weekend), but it takes time, and playing time. He won’t learn to hit it sitting on the bench. Smith’s bat is an incredible asset on the bench, and I think that your team is weaker if you give that up.
If the team starts losing, though, then you have to give Smith a shot. As long as they’re winning, I wouldn’t mess with a good thing.

has not been stellar as a starter
has been stellar as a PH

that, I'll agree with.
My ideal lineup right now is Spilly/(or murton :P)-Dex-Hawpe.
But my point is why mess with what works so well, and that is Smith PHing.
if you're reading this, it means my undying support for your team will result in its failure.
by fantasyfencing on Jul 3, 2009 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions
But what if he would be more valuable somewhere else?
Yeah, he’s been excellent PHing, but I think he has the talent to be much more than that, and he’s not getting the chance.
da numbers
.250/.385/.400 as LF,
.435/.552/.696 PHing
If he got a steady stream of starts and found a groove, id be delighted. but his last couple starts….

by fantasyfencing on Jul 3, 2009 6:19 PM MDT up reply actions
Exactly, though.
Only his last couple starts. Everyone has a couple games in a row that they don’t see results. He hasn’t really gotten a chance, and until he gets more consistent starts to show that PHing is a better role for him, I’m not ready to get off the Seth Smith should get more starts band wagon.
Okay this goes to Rox Girl too (2 in 1 reply)
I hear you holly. We both are seeing the same evidence (Smitty struggling as a starter), and coming to a different conclusion.
The reason I stick with mine is because they’re winning. Obviously whatever they’re doing is working, so stick with it and ride it out as long as you can. If for some reason it starts working, THEN try something new that might pan out.
And ya got me all wrong Rox Girl, I love his stats, thats why I posted them :o)

They're winning, but that doesn't mean all the parts are clicking.
I see no reason to not try to improve if you can, even while winning.
And I really don’t agree that Smith has struggled as a starter. That was my entire point. A handful of starts aren’t nearly enough to draw any kind of conclusion, and I don’t call a couple games evidence of struggling.
At this point I think he at least needs to get all the spot starts against RHPs. Spilly should not get those starts, but he has a couple times.
Alrighty agree to disagree then

That .385 OBP is very nice, it would rank among the top 30 in the MLB
Among qualifiers at any position and the low power is likely an anomaly given his career. This isn’t going to be a winning argument.

Yup...I don't think they'll try to take her off the ventilator until at least Monday
Today’s been kinda hard to watch, because they’ve reduced her sedation some, which makes her much more aware and anxious when they do certain things to her.
It’s hard to believe she’s already been in ICU for ten days. But she is going to beat this, and does get a tiny bit better every day.

Believe me, if anyone here is not going to be attacking Barmy, it's me.
I am of the belief that much of the heat Barmes gets here is undeserved. Not all, but a sizable chunk.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 3, 2009 7:59 PM MDT up reply actions
He doesn't really get a lot of heat, except for from certain quarters...
and I think much of the praise he gets from certain other quarters is equally undeserved. He’s a solid player for his role on the team, but he’s not irreplaceable.
You mentioned that the last time I brought it.
It always seems to me that Barmy (and Torrealba) have a significant double standard here. Yes, of course it’s a generalization and not an accusation on any posters in particular, just a common observation of the attitude.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 3, 2009 8:04 PM MDT up reply actions
The age barrier has something to do with it...
Players under around 26 will get a longer rope from some people as they are still learning the game at this level, players over 28 will be expected to contribute more. Others (although this group is fewer at PR) will expect equal contributions from everybody. I think Iannetta and Barmes are sort of in a strange place because CDI’s a little overvalued by PR, but not really deserving of scorn or the high praise he seems to get. Barmes is a little undervalued by the site and not really deserving of the scorn or the more rare praise he seems to get either.
Age could be a factor...
… but I’m not certain it tells the whole story. I’ve always felt that the hard microsopes on them were the result of Barmes never living up to his pre-injury skills and Torrealba stealing playing time from Iannetta last year, which wasn’t really his fault.
These are not only localized at PR; much of Rockies fandom reacted that way, and it’s not uncommon forsports fanbases to be harder on some players for these sorts of reasons .

Glad to see the Rox up, but they could’ve picked up a game on the Cards in the wildcard race except for a mistake made by Dusty Baker.
Here’s the decision:
Bases loaded, 1 out, you have a 3-0 lead in the top of the 8th against the Cards. Pujols, the only offense the Cards have is up. What do you do?
Correct answer: walk him, make it 3-1 & take your chances with the rest of the weak lineup.
Baker’s answer: pitch to him.
Result: Grand slam. 4-3 Cards.

So I fell asleep after work, and when I wake up, the Rox are up 5-0!
Perhaps I should fall asleep more often.
If they don't score any more runs now that you're awake,
You might want to sleep through the first six innings of the next game.
Just to be safe.
Maybe PR is just one gigantic collective dream.

We can leave Jorge out there for a bit, pitch count pretty low, and a bigger cushion

Yeah, eliminating that seventh inning bullpen is big.
As long as Jorge doesn’t continue to deteriorate. Each inning has gotten a little worse for him.

Eventually that sort of work will lead to a breaking point, Torre’s hoping it comes November 3, we’re hoping it’s sometime in August.
SF's lineup is playing over their head right now.
And the rotation is really pretty weak after Lincecum and Cain (Sadowski’s luck notwithstanding)… I’m not too concerned until they actually make some trades and we know what the August/September team will look like.

But if the wildcard boils down to Rox v. Giants,
at least the Rox control their own destiny
No records in the last 10 years should count.
Again, don't worry too much about the Giants unless they keep on winning after the ASB...
They’re actually sort of doing us a favor by taking care of a Central team that has delusions they are in it still (And that we should have taken care of ourself earlier as WolfMarauder points out above).
If that's the case, we might run away with it...
Milwaukee’s got major rotation issues, and even if they get those fixed they will have to fill holes in the lineup. San Fran’s relying on a 45 year old (HOF caliber arm, granted) a rookie without major league stuff and a Barry Zito for the last three slots of their rotation and an offense centered around two mildly obese catchers. It sounds great for a Hollywood film, but doesn’t actually work that well in practice too often. I reserve the right to change my mind if they get Matt (please, no) or otherwise boost their ballclub somehow, but the Giants aren’t as good as they get credit for right now.
That's the second time Frazier's messed that up.

But eventually it’s going to happen, and I’d rather he be a tad more sharp. I guess we’ve had a lot of close games lately, when it didn’t make sense to use him. But I think if we have another game when we’re way ahead and the starter comes out, it’d be a good idea to get him some work.
