The All-Time Colorado Rockies Roster
With the Rockies beginning to fade back into mediocrity, one of us fans can quickly look at the team and see signs that the season may be lost. This is hopefully not the case, as the Mets are hot while the Rockies are cooling down.
But, as I have found myself entering this pool of thought, I have decided one way to break the train of negative thinking is by instead remembering all the great players the Rockies have acquired through the years. So, on this note, I have compiled a Rockies All-Time All-Star Team which, if assembled, would have a fighting chance at winning the Series. I can only dream...
Let me know if you have any ideas on better choices.
The Team compiled after the Jump!!!

Also your pitching staff is very much lacking
Armando Reynoso, Pedro Astacio, and Kevin Ritz all have a bit more to offer than Jason Marquis and Jason Jennings.
Francis, Cook, Ubaldo are all better pitchers than Jennings, and I’d argue that the above 3 are as well.
Steve Reed, Mike Myers, and Gabe White all belong in the bullpen somewhere as well

Maybe so...
I agree with you, to a point. I gave Jason Jennings the nod because I felt he deserved it after how long he stood as the franchise wins leader. I spent a while debating over who else to include and Marquis was on my mind at the moment.
How do you believe I should change it?
Jennings being the Wins leader
has nothing to do with how good he was. He was a very average pitcher on a very poor team for his tenure here, so he rose above. His longevity (and same with Cook’s) is what made/makes them the franchise Wins leader.
1. Astacio
2. Jimenez
3. Ritz
4. Cook
5. De La Rosa Reynoso or Francis
Closer – Brian Fuentes
Setup – Jose Jimenez
Setup – Bruce Ruffin
Middle – Steve Reed
Middle – Darren Holmes
Middle – Gabe White (assuming we get his one outstanding year)
LOOGY – Mike Myers
Mopup – Aaron Cook

I think I would take 2007 Francis over 1993 Reynoso
The best years by each pitcher, as I recall. Astacio’s numbers were never all that great, though, and his ERA was always over 5. Ritz was pretty decent in 95, but Jason Jennings was better in 2006, with 142 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.78. I’m not even sure I would take Astacio over Marquis, just because Marquis is very effective in grounball pitching. I also believe Huston Street deserves a role as closer or reliever, as he is better than a few of those you named.
Street has been with the team 4 months
If he lasts longer, I’ll definitely consider him.
Reynoso had an ERA of 4.00 in 1993, and that was in Mile High Stadium, pre humidor. 2006 Jennings was pretty good, but he also had the benefit of the humidor.

Also don't mess around with Holliday in CF
I take Holliday over Bichette – Bichette was a Coors Hitter by sheer definition. Holliday was a more complete player, better defender, more patient.
Holliday-Burks-Walker is my starting OF
Helton-Young-Tulo-2006 Atkins
Castilla was absolutely nothing without the altitude and dry baseballs. I love the guy, but you and I both know what’s up.
Of course, I’m also assuming that we’re adjusting for modern-day Coors Field, not Coors Canaveral.

Agreed with RMN...Jeff Reed easily owns the best single season by a Rockies catcher
I think in a case like this, you just choose the three best outfielders (like the All-Star Game). That is, in my opinion, Walker, Holliday, and Burks. Hawpe is close, considering he is a post-humidor era player.

You are right about Burks and Reed
I spaced it when forgetting to add them to the roster.
I will change the roster after I have enough feeback to completely do so.
I might do Bichette over Hawpe

Both terrible defensively, but at least Bichette had the stolen bases thing going for him for a while...
…so I guess I could get behind that.

Isn't Iannetta's 2008 the best season by a catcher?
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

I’m pretty sure Jeff Reed’s was. But I don’t recall.

Chris Iannetta's 2008 (2.7 WAR) beat Jeff Reed's best

Well gosh damn.
Reed is still tops in my book, though (although it’s close, and I like Iannetta better as a player).

Bichette-Burks-Walker
that’s my OF. Coors Field pre-humidor or no, Dante was HUGE for this team. And dried baseballs don’t make you clutch, and that dude was. He gets the nod over Holly, if only for the number of years in which both contributed to the club.
Burks is a legit CF’er and he was good as a Rockie. Very good.
And, for the record, the best player ever to wear the Rockies uni was Larry Walker. As complete a player as I’ve ever seen and hands-down the best baserunner I’ve ever witnessed. Without injuries, he’s a HOF’er for sure.
Agreed
I like Holliday and all, but Bichette was the man. They’re pretty similar, too. Both left fielders, they both led the team to the playoffs, they both were fairly close to winning the Triple Crown, and they both came in second to undeserving shortstops in the Central Division for the MVP vote. But Bichette is just cooler – he’s gotta be in there.
John Vander Wal deserves a bench outfield spot over Juan Pierre, I’d say.

Walt Weiss?
without looking at statistics I remember him being a very good glove man and not too bad with the bat (I am too young to remember him before the Rockies). I would like him on the bench over Perez.

I agree...
Weiss over Perez for sure… We’ve had plenty of coulda woulda shoulda been great middle infielders, but never were… Belliard, Ozuna, Uribe, Perez, Clayton, … Weiss definitely tops them, and I’d say Tulo still has some proving to do.
I'll be doing one of these at the end of my WAR series...
so far, my top players (by single season WAR performance) are:
C: Chris Iannetta (2008)
1B: Todd Helton (2000)
2B: Jamey Carroll (2006)
and by Rockies career:
C: Jeff Reed
1B: Todd Helton
2B: Eric Young
Eschew Obfuscation!
It still blows my mind that Carroll had the best 2B season ever
Hopefully Nelson, Gomez or EY2 have something to say about it

I have modified the roster
I switched over a few players on the main roster and the bench. I’m glad I was given a reliever better than Shawn Chacon.
Let me know what you think.
Lets get
Chone Figgins in on the action, despite him never playing for the Rockies….
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
Who were the best Rockies farmhands.....
to never play for the Rockies?
On the top of my list would be Brad Ausmus and Chone Figgins. Jake Westbrook belongs in the conversation. Who else? Jody Gerut and Josh Bard. Any others?
