Dodgers acquire George Sherrill

Ken Gurnick from MLB.com is reporting that the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired LHP George Sherrill from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 3B Josh Bell and RHP Steve Johnson.

Sherrill , the closer for Baltimore, was 0-1 with 20 saves and a 2.40 ERA, complemented by a 3.00 K/BB ratio through 41 1/3 innings of work.

Sherrill will likely be the primary setup man for Dodgers' closer Jonathan Broxton.

What this means for the Rockies is that there is 1 less LHP bullpen candidate available for trade. The Rockies will now turn their attention toward veteran Mark Hendrickson from the O's or perhaps to Toronto for LHP Scott Downs.

Bell, 23, is putting up a .296/.386/.497 line with the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Dodgers' AA affiliate.

Johnson, 22, made the jump to AA this season, and has a 1.69 ERA in 2 starts for the Lookouts.

Exactly.

What happened to the two top prospects they were demanding?

by Muzia on Jul 30, 2009 2:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Did anyone believe someone would actually offer that?

O’s start by asking high, as they should. The other side in negotiations tries talking them down. I guess the O’s figured this was good enough, though it does seem underwhelming. Bell was toward the end of organizational top 10 lists, it seems.

Per ESPN. I may be in the minority but i would ship EY2 for Beimel like now. Everyone is loading up and we are going to get left. We will still have a good year but mid market teams ned to make there playoff runs when they can.

Honestly....

we need more than a LH reliever. A legit bat in LF (or maybe just starting Smith everyday). A legit bat at 2B. A rotation upgrade from Hammel. Then maybe a LH reliever.

At this point, I think the Rockies are going to be passed by the Cubs/Cardinals & Braves unless they make another move.

by sg8335aa on Jul 30, 2009 2:37 PM MDT up reply actions

We have the OF bats

It’s the management’s willingness to play them.

Barmes’ bat at 2B, as we’ve discussed ad nauseum, is countered by his glove. His bat, as it stands, is just below average, but when you account for positional adjustments, Barmes has been a 1.5 win player so far this season.

I don’t think we can feasibly acquire a better 2B. Brian Roberts would be nice, and he has a better bat, but his glove plays as below average anymore.

I also think

that any starting pitching will come from within. Smith/CarGo has been a good platoon, IMO, and CarGo has shown some life recently.

This is clearly a bad stretch for the Rox, but I think overreacting here would be terrible.

by roxintober on Jul 30, 2009 2:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Not an over-reaction...

I like the future potential of the bats on this team but if we’re serious about making the playoffs this year, we’re killing our chances while we let Stewart, Fowler and CarGo develop.

I understand that for the long-term benefit of the team, this isn’t really the year to make a run (hence why only Bentacourt was aquired). My point was merely, if we wanted to be serious about this year, we needed another bat in the lineup.

by sg8335aa on Jul 30, 2009 2:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah agreed

but there’s always the “what if Iannetta, Stewart, or Hawpe turn into Atkins?” question about 2010. I think we should be better next year but who knows. Todd will be a year older, injuries, etc…I feel like if you are leading the wildcard on August 1 you should seriously make an effort for the playoffs.

by moomacher on Jul 30, 2009 2:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Our bats can suffice

Everyone would like more offense. This team loses the majority of its games from bad bullpen. Whether itis/was Balisle,Rincon,Peralts,Corpas. Embree (early on more so). the starters have had many quality starts only to be let down. rincon throwing the way he did Monday is not tolerable by a playoff contending team.

Beimel is available and if it takes EY2 to get him than so be it.

by Roxfan24 on Jul 30, 2009 2:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Beimel isn’t the answer. Rincon shouldn’t have been in the game on Monday, it should have been Bentacourt. Beimel has 5 loses and 4 BS so far this year. He isn’t the answer either. We need a rotation upgrade and/or offense before we get another bullpen answer.

by sg8335aa on Jul 30, 2009 3:05 PM MDT up reply actions

The problem isn't just one batter

the problem with the Rockies is it’s several batters. If you look at say one…lets take Barmes, you can say he brings enough to the table to be a plus…but not offensively. Same with LF, where we would expect good offensive production. Not happening lately. Same with Catcher, same with 3rd base. All of these positions haven’t produced enough. Individually you can make a claim all are ok…but when you add it up that’s too many spots in a line up not producing enough.

Solutions? With out spending money? Look at the teams that are adding talent. The Dodgers, The Cubs, The Phillies all are big market, big pocket teams. The Mariners & Cardinal have had payrolls near $110 million are very much in the upper middle class of teams. The Rockies don’t have the money or the payroll …and fixing the economic disparities of baseball, is something I don’t know how to fix. (and I personally don’t think the powers that be want to fix it..as having successful big market teams is better for baseball)

Ok…back to what can the Rockies do to improve their team.
Catcher: I’m not sure there are many catchers that hit…so this one is a push for most clubs, and not upgradeable. However, having Torrealba or Phillips in the line up, I don’t think we lose much offense…so I might trade Iannetta if I could get a player of need (specifically a AA young corner IF with up side)

2ndbase: I bring up EY2. Have him split time with Barmes. Not a straight split…Barmes is the “starter”….EY2 gets like 2 starts a week..if he does good..more.

3rdbase: Stewart was on the up swing for a lot of July…then slowed down. I PRAY he works out long term and short term. He can’t bust. Only Stewart can up grade 3rd base. Atkins just isn’t the same player he once was.

LF: Smith has really fallen off since the all star break. .167/.273/222 in his last 8 games. That’s a huge fall fast. Is he hurt? Is there a new book on him?
CF: Fowler Has really struggled, but even more so lately .200/.349/343 since the all star break with only 4 SB.
RF: Hawpe has slowed down .280 since the All Star break but only one HR.

OF: Spilly has looked terrible of late…..so the solution….play CarGo a lot more, especially in CF, but in all spots giving guys a break. Hope he’s improved enough to be an offensive improvement. Maybe a little rest will spark one or all three of our OFs

I’d also DFA Rincon, and bring up Deduno in the pen. I move Hammel to the Pen (or even try to trade him as I don’t think he’s a good fit for Coors Field, not enough control or power), and start either Fogg or Chacin.

Is this hard? Yeah…this is a playoff race. Not t-ball. I don’t give a damn if your widdle feewings are hurt.

Start Seth Smith! Free Eric Young Jr.!

by Redhawk on Jul 30, 2009 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Flip Hammel and Fogg

Ditch Rincon. If you don’t make the playoffs it isn’t the end of the world. but this team needs to compete and not be satisfied with average. Santana is a stud he can shut down any team. But this team is as streaky as they come with the bats.

by Roxfan24 on Jul 30, 2009 3:19 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree with what you have to say....

EY2 up and either Deduno or Rogers. The big thing we need is another OF bat. LF is a sinkhole right now. If we’re committed to Fowler in CF (good thing) we need a reliable bat in LF. That’s where we need to upgrade.

by sg8335aa on Jul 30, 2009 3:19 PM MDT up reply actions

cherry picking

Smith is hitting that .167/.273/.222 in 22 PA’s. You’ve never seen a player have a stretch like that over 22 consecutive PA’s?

Helton is having a remarkably consistent season, yet from May 22 to May 26, he had 22 PA’s, and hit .111 / .273 / .167.

What does it all mean? The mostly likely answer is that the guy didn’t hit well for 22 PA’s.

I'm waiting on the Dodgers and the Giants

Good teams slow down…they don’t slump. Mediocre teams slump. Some don’t unslump.

Honestly June and the 1/2 of July the Rockies played incredible. Way over their heads. They one and scored runs with a terrible BA, cause they had big hits, timely hits and great pitching.

Now I’m afraid we are seeing the “real” Rockies…which to me is a .500 team. Too young to be consistent enough. Lacking good proven veteran bats

Rocks are 7-6 since the all star break, that’s not much off the Dodgers 14-11. I think we’re panicking over a pretty small sample size. Didn’t somebody mention Fowler only had 4 SB since? That’s 13 games…

Semantics

Now I feel we’re getting into semantics. “Slumps” vs. “slowing down.”

Teams will have their ups and downs. Why put the punctuation mark where you’re putting them? July for some players, the last 22 PA’s for Smith, half of July for the team.

I don’t disagree with most of what you’ve written above. Maybe some players are pressing, or are even tired. Spot starting some guys for might well help.

But I don’t see why one should exaggerate the effects of a bad series any more than one should assume the Rockies are always going to play like they did in June.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Jul 30, 2009 3:59 PM MDT up reply actions

This is a good point

I was just thinking yesterday about how the team doesn’t have any “holes”, i.e., Danny Ardoin type guys that are auto-outs with no upside, but the fact is we have no “stars” either. There are only a few guys that would be candidates for top 5 at their position, and nobody is close to #1.

The thing is, this team has not been a “sum of its parts” squad. Under Hurdle, we were less. Under Tracy, we have been more. As Redhawk suggests, the real team is somewhere in the middle, and probably not good enough to win the wild card stretch. I just don’t know how you “fix” this situation. Just gotta hope that we can play over our heads enough to separate.

by Teekalong on Jul 30, 2009 3:39 PM MDT up reply actions

I think most of us have come to the conclusion

that this ‘09 club is a .500 team and I tend to agree, which is all the more reason we don’t sell the farm for 1 LOOGY. Beimel, Downs or any other LH pitcher in the pen is not going to turn this team from a .500 team to a playoff team and even more a team that can go deep into the playoffs. Thats why making a trade right now is not a necessity. We should mostly go w/ what we have unless there is a deal too good to turn down, and use some of our young guns if neccesary. It is not a guarantee that Dex, CarGo, and others will improve next year, but I don’t think all of these guys are .220 hitters either. I think we have a chance for a lot of improvement next year, and especially the pen, when guys like Weathers, Lindsay, and Escalona may be ready to help the big club. Maybe even Reynolds and Friedrich at some point. I just don’t think its time to flip out and start making trades.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
