Game #102: Jorge De La Rosa vs Jonathan Niese
Colorado Rockies at New York Mets, Jul 30, 2009 5:10 PM MDT
How much panic will be in this game thread?
vs.
At least we aligned a bad pitching performance with a bad offensive performance this afternoon. I hate games where one side of the team seems like it's win worthy only to be done in by the other side of the team. Let's try and align good performances on both sides tonight.
GO ROCKIES!

My gut feeling...
Rockies win big tonight. Seen it many times, when this team is seemingly at its worst and looking
anemic, they bust out with the bats in a series finale as if to say “enough of this crap.” Happened
earlier this year in 4th game at Houston, Outkins with 2 HR’s for heaven sakes. Somebody is going to come up big at the plate tonight. De La Rosa on the mound doesn’t hurt any either.
That's a sign of a good team
and this is a must win game just for those reasons. (no there is no such thing as a must win game in baseball really). The Rockies need to stop the bleeding, and get a win.

Rox will be fine tonight.
This is a good team. Are the Dodgers freaking out because of the 4 game losing streak? Probably, but that team is still good too.
they score runs in their losses though
if you're reading this, it means my undying support for your team will result in its failure.

A win tonight
and we still have a chance of rescuing this road trip at .500 with series wins in Cincy (definitely doable) and Philly (less likely sure).
Just need to somehow remove the New York curse, where Rox bats go to die.
Here's the thing about this road trip
I’m trying to take the worst case scenario…even if we go 2-8 on this road trip, which would qualify as a disaster in many ways….we still end the road trip four games over .500, and likely no more than 3-4 games back in the WC chase, max.
This is no time to enter the PANIC ROOM.
That said, we really need to win this one tonight, just to establish some confidence. 22 scoreless innings by the offense? Ick.

Rockies were just sleepy this morning
Coors Field time was about 10:00 am when the game starting. They’d probably be waking up at that time in Colorado. They were so sleepy they can’t even remember the game right now, much less see the ball when they were playing.
Tonight, they’ll have woken up and be angry since they got a loss they were too tired to remember. I wouldn’t worry too much.
Escape from New York
Time to acquire the services of Snake Plissken (on the mound) to mow down the mets and lead them to Cincy…

Giving up two arms to get two arms doesn't really
add up, though. I really don’t know what the Pirates are doing other than just collecting a bunch of players that teams don’t seem to be that reluctant to part with, save for maybe Tim Alderson. They seem to be building a young team that’s got a good chance to be mediocre, but not much better than that.

The Fuentes streak was pretty bad.
But my least favorite was that one where Michael Tucker hit that homer in the one game the Rockies managed to score on the road in 2005. That 11 game losing streak was debilitating; especially fact that everyone knew we would be terrible that season.

It was right after the All Star break in '07
Rockies lost something like 9 in a row, and Fuentes had 4 or 5 blown saves. That’s what cost him his job as closer. But, that was also the World Series year. If not for those losses, the Rox would’ve made the playoffs much easier.

Jeff & Jack were talking about us against the Mets earlier
The Rockies worst road record against any time if the Mets, easy. We’re 20-49 there going into this game. That’s a .289 winning percentage.
Given that, I’m not ready to declare this series as anything other than business as usual at the Mets, at least until we see what happens the rest of the trip.
Are the Braves second?
We’ve done better lately, but the start against them in the 90’s was horrible.
Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.
Look out Dodgers...Purple objects in mirror are closer than they appear.
yeah but this Mets team has almost a completely different lineup to prior years
and plays in a different stadium. I blame lack of execution rather than past history for this series
The stadium I'll give you maybe.
But that record was against all kinds of different lineups throughout Rockies history. So that doesn’t seem to matter much.
And sure, execution is always the culprit even in otherwise unexplainable trends. But that’s some pretty bleak history, there. There might be something to it.
eh, offensive ineptitude has just evened out more since the humidor
rox bats would always go into slumps on the road (which has been discussed here muchly); now it just happens more at home as well.

It would be odd to pitch Daley in both games
I wonder how often that happens.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
He only pitched
one inning earlier. It’s not odd to do that with a reliever, especially a closer.

Quick question
Anybody think Tulo is a top 5 SS right now? I was tryin to think and the only guys I could think of that are definatly better were Hanley and Jeter.
Hmm..Jeter's getting up there in age but yeah he's better.
Umm..let’s see. J-Roll…Escobar..Theriot..Tejada..
Those guys are up there too. But I DEFINITELY think Tulo’s top 5. I give him #3 behind those two you mentioned.
by CentralCaliRox on Jul 30, 2009 7:27 PM MDT up reply actions
Wow, ok
Tejada is right there with him and so is Escobar imo, but Theriot no way. J Roll is probably better than him too.
by GoldenNugget on Jul 30, 2009 7:28 PM MDT up reply actions
have you guys seen the season Rollins is having
He was mlbs least valuable shortstop just a couple weeks ago on fangraphs. If we are considering this season, tulo is ahead of Rollins

Look at Theriot's numbers though
I’m definitely not saying he’s BETTER I’m just mentioning him. Calm down.
by CentralCaliRox on Jul 30, 2009 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions
I assume you're doing something to quantify defense, too...
…since Tulo may be a better defensive SS than even Ozzie Smith was?
He's the best in the game right now
Hands down
by CentralCaliRox on Jul 30, 2009 7:38 PM MDT up reply actions
tulos 2007 season defensively was historic in so many ways
But definitely not ozzie level career wise. Fangraphs is food for quantifying defense

or does the team watch WAY too many 3rd strikes when they struggle? It seems like when the offense is on, they are much more aggressive.

You know...
as long we we win tonight, this series isn’t a complete disaster. LA has lost 4 in a row and is losing their 5th…

Yeah, but we can pretty much write off the division anyway...
…I’m a lot more interested in what SF and ATL do…
How about Florida?
They have a good staff and are due to win a series every 6 years…

Potential is there, and Josh Johnson has emerged, but others have take a step back so overall they’re very much average this season.
