Washington Post Reports Rockies acquire Joe Beimel
Chico Harlan of the Washington Post is reporting the Rockies acquired left handed pitcher Joe Beimel from the Nationals to bolster their bullpen, although it's unclear at this point what they've sent in return.
Earlier reports linking the Rockies to Beimel indicated that they were asking for Eric Young Jr., but the Rockies were reluctant to part with their second base prospect. As more comes out about this trade, we will update.
UPDATE: MLBlogs is reporting that the trade is "for two minor league pitchers" but not Eric Young.
UPDATE II: Troy E. Renck indicates that Sky Sox closer Ryan Mattheus might be one of the pitchers returning to Washington. Beimel's agent says he's excited about the opportunity to play with the Rockies.
UPDATE III: Per the comments, MLB Network reported the trade is Beimel for Mattheus and 23 year old RHP Robinson Fabian. The Nationals get a couple of live arms, but there's plenty of risk from their end.

Would rather have seen Reynolds up w/ the big club
unless we gave up Colonel or Miller, or something that will not damage the farm too much.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Reynolds isn't going to be ready until next year at least
He has 10 innings above A+ ball.

Once a guy hits AA
I think the team is confident he can move from there to the big club, unless its a guy they are just moving based on age and no real dominance. All we are asking for is a lefty that can get other lefties out, not to be a set up man. I would rather see what he has first, then give up too much for the likes of Beimel.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

In all aspects
Beimel was incredibly overrated last year. Now he’s gone to other side of the spectrum wand being underrated. His WHIP has been lower this year, especially against lefties, and that is with the worst defense in the MLB behind him.

Still an improvement over Rincon
and still another lefty

And I think
this is the key. More lefty (and he’s not bad) and less Rincon

Scary stat? Rockies bullpen ERA minus Street’s contribs: 5.17

Is it an upgrade from Rincon? Sure. But...
Beimel’s got almost no platoon split this year – righties OPSing .714, lefties at .705 (and most of that is slugging.) He’s got an 11/10 BB/K ratio against righties.
Betancourt was a good trade. This seems like a panic deal, although we’ll know more once the cost reveals itself.

The question is who blinked?
If it was the Nationals suddenly coming down on their price, than it’s not really a panic move. If it was the Rockies acquiescing, than I think you could be right.
Definitly.
I can’t imagine the Rockies were the ones who panicked though. They were nut under the gun to get him.
I agree
I’d be pretty upset if we gave up somebody the franchise is pretty high on for a guy who is at best going to be the fourth or fifth best reliever you have. Which is why I’m both scared that they did but fairly optimistic that they didn’t.

It could be a panic move
look at all the deals that have gone on today. I’d like to think it wasn’t, because we’ve been tracking him for a while. It may have also been a panic on the Nationals side realizing that this could be their last chance to move him. I really doubt Beimel would move unclaimed through waivers
by bballrox4717 on Jul 31, 2009 1:39 PM MDT up reply actions
Only one of the moves today really has an impact on the Rockies, though...
And that would be LaRoche to the Braves, which might not be that big of an upgrade over Kotchmann. I don’t know, I worry about Atlanta, but we still have a pretty good leg up on them.
I think I agree with small upgrade
Since Kotchman seems like a better fielder, and LaRoche isn’t great shakes himself as a 1B.
At least they took the time to take a little stumble the same time we made ours.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
I really do think that the Nationals made this trade happen
DOD said we were going to stay put.
I’m not eliminating the possibility of this being a panic move though. Getting Nick Johnson would prove we’re panicking.

All I can say is
If this is true, Beimel must be ecstatic to get out of Washington.
If the asking price....
..wasn’t too high, then kudos to D O’d for this one. Beimel’s a solid pro who won’t get blown up and gets lefties out. It takes pressure off Morales and gives Tracy another veteran who can handle late inning work.
It gives Tracy the ability to work Morales whenever he wants
instead of having to play the game of lefties with him because Morales was the only lefty in the pen.

So, if we offer arbitration to him and Bets, and they leave, we will get two picks!

I think you nailed it.
He didn’t want to sign with the rockies because he thought a better offer would come along. He waited too long and got stuck with whatever team would take him. I don’t see that as mattering to how he regards the team now. didn’t want to sign with the Rockies this off season. To the point he signed a one year deal with the Nationals. Does that affect this trade? 2 minor league pitchers…for 2 months of Biemel who doesn’t want to pitch in Colorado.

Way too much is being made....
of this “he didn’t want to be here” stuff. It was a business deal that didn’t work out. if we hated Colorado, he wouldn’t have entertained an offer.
Plus, look at it this way: he’ll be a FA again this season, so he’s going to give everything he has right now. And, if he leaves, as mkorpal points out, we get a nice draft pick.
I said above
that we didn’t want to give Beimel the length or volume he was looking for. So he said “fine I’ll go do whatever” expecting to get a big contract from someone. And it didn’t come, so he had to sign with the Nats.

Some kind words are due...
our GM and (gulp) our ownership.
O’Dowd is good. flat out. When I’ve doubted him (see Ramirez for De La Rosa) I’ve always had to eat crow. He fills needs smartly and doesn’t get taken. People have to reach back nearly a decade for a truly bad deal he’s made (Figgins in 2001). he does it all with budget restrictions that would choke most GMs. Extend his contract, I say.
As for the Monforts, they are ponying up for Bettancourt and beimel’s salaries in an effort to win now. I give them great credit for that.
yeah
our groundbreaking moves are …. well, they’re small, but significant

"need" is a strong word
He’ll help. They’re uncertain about Lowell’s ability to stay in the field, so if they need to slide Youkilis over, VMart can play 1st. Varitek is old and now he can share time with a guy who can actually hit. Then there’s 2010.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
They have Kotchman to play first now, and pretty damn well too
Kotchman, Youkilis, Pedroia, and Lowire/Green makes a sick infield defense. Varitek’s doing fine at catcher, Ortiz resurged, and they still have Lowell. Martinez makes them gluts for punishment.
by bballrox4717 on Jul 31, 2009 2:26 PM MDT up reply actions
They're right around league avg offensively
So VMart will definitely help there. I’m sure they see this as much for the effect on 2010 as the rest of the year, too.

Good question
He looks like he’s out of options and there’s prob a service time issue there anyway.
They may have to cut ties with the backup catcher (Kotteras) and hope someone volunteers to get in front of Wakefield when he returns.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Red Sox Got Better
This deal makes sense on several levels. Varitek is not the same threat he used to be, despite being one of the better “pitcher’s catchers” out there. So V-Mart is an upgrade offensively. You can DH him with Varitek behind the plate (benching Ortiz), and use him behind the plate to give Varitek a breather. With Varitek’s age, V-Mart takes over as starter moving forward
WOW
That kind of slipped under the radar, but you knew the Sox had the pieces to go get him.

I still think it’s Mattheus + another minor league pitcher

See below at MondoGarage's post
it’s Mattheus and Fabian

Now this is a deal I can get behind
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Mattheus and Robinson Fabian
I have no idea who Fabian is, other than he had some hits about 50 years ago.

Wow....
the Rockies just got a good lefty for their minor league crap. Fabian is terrible.

Fabian's not terrible...
He’s a live arm, over 90’s stuff, just very unlikely to refine his command to the point where he’s useful.
Wow, he's pretty bad
And 23, and still in Sally League. Player equivalent of a couple bags of balls and a pizza.

Betancourt and Beimel
For Graham, Mattheus, and Fabian
Wonderful job on the bullpen, DOD.
/standing ovation
Good call...
basically what I said below.

YEAH that's frikin' awesome
None of those guys fit into any of our plans. And we still have Jhoulys, Friedrich, etc etc

It's obviously too early to REALLY tell,
but you’ve gotta hand it to O’Dowd for acquiring two solid bullpen options – SOMETHING EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU WANTED – for a couple of fringe prospects and a guy who is terrible in a league that he’s too old for.

Agree (w/muzia02, too).
Reasonable deal, even if those guys turn out to be something. The Rockies are really close, and I think it’s worth the risk to try to solidify this year’s position.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
None of them will probably be any better than the guys we traded for too.
Dan O’Dowd is proving his worth!

This is what Peavy's agent said about the deal
“Frankly I am flabbergasted that the White Sox would want to make this deal with him in his physical condition,” Axelrod said.
He's already got the contract till 2013
And he got his client out of a terrible team.
He’s doing what everyone should be doing to the White Sox GM right now: cause him pain with words for the idiotic deal.
I wonder how White Sox fans are reacting right now

Aside from the picture of the guy committing suicide
SouthSideSox seems to be okay with the deal so far.
LOL
They are certainly taking it sportingly eh?

With all of these Rockies Trades
I now have to change all of my baseball cards around. I keep any player that has ever played for the Rockies in my Colorado Rockies section (whether they are in a Rox uniform or not). Thanks DOD for making me work and look at my cards, it really is appreciated.

I would hope so
but since Daley and Morales have options left I wouldn’t know.

I doubt it
Even if there were, a player with service time could refuse the assignment and become a FA instead. That’s how we ended up with him, Detroit wanted to send him to the minors and he refused.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
I think that would be the best move.
I’ve had enough of Rincon and his nearly 7 ERA….
