Game #80: Yusmeiro Petit vs. Aaron Cook
Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies, Jul 4, 2009 6:10 PM MDT
Happy Fourth of July ladies and gentleman, Rockies fans, Diamondbacks fans, non-baseball fans...and Happy 233rd birthday, USA. Let's celebrate with another walloping of the Diamondbacks at Coors Field.
If the Rockies want to win this series, it's a good idea to do it tonight. Sure, Ubaldo Jimenez is starting tomorrow, but so is Dan Haren. This pitching matchup favors the Rockies ridiculously, as Arizona's Petit is not only coming off the disabled list but has been very ineffective when healthy this season.
Aaron Cook pitched eight innings, allowing just one run in his last start. Somehow, that impressive outing was only the fourth best among Rockies starters through the last turn of the rotation. In their respective last starts, Rockies starters averaged 8 IP, with 2 CGs and and ERA of 0.90. Who needs a bullpen?
Also of note, Aaron Cook is 5-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 3.429 K/BB under Jim Tracy. He was only 3-2 with a 4.82 ERA abd 1.083 K/BB under Clint Hurdle. Then again, a lot of players have better stat lines under Tracy.
Starting Pitchers:

Diamondbacks vs Rockies coverage
Identical lineup for the Rockies tonight, while Hinch only keeps two spots constant.
Go Rockies!

Happy 4th, Rowbots!
Hope you’ve all had a good day and will have a better evening capped off by another Rockies win. May have a repeat of last night’s weather delay, however.
Also wanted to give Mondogarage a shout out, in hope of more baby steps for his wife.
Let’s go Rox!
And how far back are we now?
Thanks, rockhead
On my way back to the hospital for a bit…came home after about 27 hours there. Yes, more baby steps today, but it’s harder to watch, with her sedation somewhat lessened. I may not stay there much tonight, as I’m truly exhausted, but we’ll see.
Dunno if you’ll see me much/any in the thread tonight, but Go Rox. I did find that Chad Tracy absolutely kills Cookie…but if he can deal an 0-fer to everyone else, it won’t matter.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I really like what Tracy's been doing with this club
but would someone please explain the continued use of Gonzalez in LF vs. RHP when Seth Smith is in the dugout. I know everyone’s ga ga over Seth’s pinch hit role but this is a much more potent offense with him getting 4 ABs vs. 1.
"I've had pretty good success with Stan Musial by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third." - Carl Erskine
You mean upgrade...
upside would imply it’s a potential return, when it’s very real right now. Smith wasn’t shabby himself, though, so the question of whether the defensive bonus is worth the pretty substantial offensive difference arises, and the answer’s most likely no.
eh... upside works too the more I think about it,
I just think it’s got more of a connotation of something in the future in baseball, but I shouldn’t have been so particular.
You just enjoy arguing with me. :p
I can’t say I know if Gonzalez’s defense makes up for the offensive struggles he’s had, but Gonzalez can reach areas Smith can’t quite easily, and it’s not very noticeable, because those plays CarGo makes easily, and Smith isn’t anywhere close, so it looks like a routine hit. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to loearn that having CarGo in LF helps is in some subtle ways because of range along.
Tracy may also be hoping that CarGo wakes up Oakland style and becomes a force to be reckoned with again.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 4, 2009 5:55 PM MDT up reply actions
I don't think the answer's "most likely" no.
Frankly, I think the answer is no. Period. Seth can rake. I’ve seen no indication of that from Gargo (whose nickname with me has become Outgo). And even if Seth throws up an 0fer for the night, at least the potential is there for some serious offensive fireworks.
And how far back are we now?
Ultimately, you may be correct.
But I maintain that, in admittedly subtle ways, CarGo in LF saves us hits, and perhaps runs. There were at least three lines last night that Fowler and Cargo were able to reach, and most other outfielders would not. Those drop as hits with others out there.

I was there too, and I also ran into the "Rockies Biggest Fan" last night, dude has attended 200+ straight games at Coors. Has a bunch of signed bats and everything. I was surprised at something else, he was talking with a girl who had some GREAT questions for him…so much so that I’m wondering if she is a poster on here.

Has a nice range of 88-93 mph that he just crushes, anything above or below throws him off.

I don't think it'd help...
…D-Backs’ problem seems to be more a shortage of talent than anything that can be solved with a new manager…
Short on polish, not on talent.
A lot of those guys just got up to the bigs and stopped growing as players for whatever reason. Upton’s going to be a superstart, Reynolds is pretty valuable in his way, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot to back those two up right now.
Their ex-mgr Bob Melvin
is supposedly going to manage the Padres next year.
Talk about from frying pan into fire (no talent).
Except for Everth Cabrera, who’s looking pretty good.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
That can't be right.
The Padres just extended Bud Black.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 4, 2009 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions
During the Pads-Astros series I was watching
They said Black’s contract was up at the end of the year
And that Melvin had just been signed as a consultant for the Padres.
If they extended Black, it must’ve been in the last 2 days.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
Checked the Pads' website
An item posted today quotes the owner as saying Black “is likely” to get an extension “at some point”, w/ the GM also offering praise.
So it looks like the rumors about Melvin were wrong. Guess he’s still available as mgr material.
No records in the last 10 years should count.
The terms of the extention haven't been announced, so I suppose it is possible they change their minds.
But most seem pretty confident it will happen.
by Greg Stanwood on Jul 4, 2009 7:14 PM MDT up reply actions
What's sad is I think they had no intention of hiring Melvin as a plan B to Black
Unlike the Rockies who seemed to have that idea with Tracy all along, but they had to give Black an extension or else it looks that they are thinking to replace him. Really I think they just wanted Melvin for his expertise, they have a long history of nabbing onto people when other orgs let them go (see Paul DePodesta, for instance).
Everth is your favorite non-Rockies player?

Their pitching, starters & bullpen, has been pretty amazing
And that was before their AAA call-up (Sadowski) gives up 0 runs

Anyone know if he’s related to an ex-ML pitcher from long ago named Sadowski?
Ray Sadowski, I think it was.

maybe we can borrow their pitching analysts
ffor minors
Sadowski's got a decent sinker, but he's not ROY material...
He’s sort of like the Padres’ Geer who shut down the Dodgers today but came in with a 5+ ERA. The Rockies will face a real talented kid in that next series against the Braves in Hanson. I don’t know if the Sadowski’s are related.
It was Bob Sadowski
who pitched 1963 – 66, so Ryan’s too young to be his son, I think.
Checked his bio — had a 4.11 ERA in AAA & wasn’t that highly-rated a prospect.
Let’s call it beginner’s luck & watch for him to fade.

Not too scary, they are at home,
Where they’ve been terrific this season and Pablo Sandoval went out with a bruised knee today, I don’t know how long the rest of their offense can keep it up.
Which still gets an undeserved rep for a pitcher's park.
It’s not, really, they’ve just had a bad offense usually.
looking forward to it
hope their schedule is uphill from here
Not as much as I hoped, the key thing will be how the Rockies play against them at Coors
They’ve got two long road trips, one each in July and August, and both end in Denver. If we can make sure both end on a sour note and come off unsuccessful, we should be in pretty good shape.
I can't accept that offense will be in the playoffs
it just hurts my brain

yeah. I wish more banks were quicker.
Most just absorb the loss. Any idea how your info was compromised? I’m not asking …..I’m suggesting that you you think about it and maybe call your local PD. If you think that something “fishy” was going on at a certain ATM or place that you swipe your bank card, they may want to know. “Skimmers” are getting more popular here in the US.

unfortunately no clue but
I haven’t used it online for awhile so maybe a skimmer, depends on how quickly they made the card. It was used in Mexico so either the number was given quickly over the phone or it was taken awhile ago
Glad to hear the bank took care of it.
It’s real scary that it’s happening so much these days.

Boras has the better information that nay other agent on
how much these teams REALLY make, which makes the owners unhappy. He makes it available to his clients, the client decides what he wants and Boras is willing to take the heat. He does not need the money, but manages as much of the players affairs that they need, so they can just play ball.

Miles is an interesting vocal choice.
He has good vocal control, but he’s not the stereotypical stadium song power voice they use.
Fowler took in extra BP today to work on his bunts according to Krieger.
Haven’t seen it pay off yet.
Are they trying to make him
a Taveras clone, since he is struggling at the plate
Just giving him an added dimension to get on base...
He’s always going to have more power (and patience, clearly) than Taveras or Pierre, but if he could add their bunt ability too, it would be great.

anything different
Gonzalez has been criticized in the past for having mental lapses to his game both at the plate and in the field. He doesn’t effectively work counts, he is error prone, and streaky. According to Hot Prospects
Did Hot Prospects
say anything about him causing the opposition to hit line drives 3 feet from the top of the wall?
Probably not but it does suggest why this is his 3rd game in a row without a hit
July 3rd: 0-3
June 30th: 0-4
also June 29th: 0-1 (PH)
No argument there
but I’m not sure what that has to do with this discussion about CarGon’s supposed defensive issues. The advantages of a LF with exceptional range seem obvious, particularly at the moment
by Junction Rox on Jul 4, 2009 10:02 PM MDT up reply actions
No doubt...
….his ability, especially at Coors, is definitely a plus for the Rox. But right now, he’s looking like the opposite of Manny Ramierez (although that isn’t necessarily a bad thing) – all glove, no bat. I just think the Rockies scouting reports probably didn’t forsee these types of hitting woes.
by TulsaDriller on Jul 4, 2009 10:07 PM MDT up reply actions
True
But he isn’t going to work out those hitting woes in AAA or on the bench, he is a plus defender, and he is a major part of the future plan for the franchise. And they have been winning while getting him playing time. But Spilly or Smitty would unquestionably improve the offense. So what do you do??
by Junction Rox on Jul 4, 2009 10:10 PM MDT up reply actions
Well, in AAA
he was a great field, great hit corner OF, which suggests the tools are there for him to be something more than a good-field, no-hit corner OF. I think pigeonholing him as such is as foolish as pigeonholing Smitty as just the best PH in the game or Spilly as just a #5 OF (although ultimately I think that is where both of them fit best…)

And I am about to open myself up for the biggest attack to date...
….but there’s gotta be an AL team that would kill for this type of special ability. The guy seems tailor-suited to DH, wonder if we could get a top 8th inning guy. (OK, let the assault for this blasphemy begin)
But he can play defense perfectly fine.
I don’t see how he’d be any better as a DH than as a starter in the NL.
true that....
…I guess I’m just not attached to Smitty and wouldn’t have as hard a time seeing him go if we could beef up our obviously ailing pen. Just speculating; it is just killing me seeing the bullpen killing our starters hard work. If we could throw complete games form here on out then I’d be fine too.
well then why not move one of our other guys?

apparently, Tracy has a rule that if a man's your long reliever...
…he doesn’t get used for anything else…
He should have been brought in when Cook left
First that was a silly play by Cook. But that is a perfect sspot for Fogg. He could pitch the 6th and 7th.
I agree.
Although Embree, who did come in, wasn’t the problem tonight. But there does seem to be a bit of an over reliance on a couple guys going on. At the very least using Fogg in appropriate situations would stave off overusing some of the other guys.
Or using several pitchers to get out of one inning.
I’m agreeing with you, by the way, just supplementing your point.

I don’t think the differences in fielding ability between Spilly and Smith are all that significant, at least in LF.

Dude I can't believe I missed
Helton pulling a football move and tackling the catcher. I’m glad they replayed that.
Glad you got to see the replay
but I’m really done with hearing the FSRM cheerleaders praising the play and the decision to send Todd. Frankly, I would have much rather had second and third with one out than a runner on second, two outs and some kind of mythical intangible for the boys in the dugout.
To me, Dauer made a very, very bad decision there and no amount of woohooing from the broadcast team can change that.
