Game #82: Craig Stammen vs. Jason Marquis

Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies, Jul 6, 2009 6:40 PM MDT

Entering this season, Baseball America ranked Craig Stammen as the #20 prospect in the Nationals organization, and he made it into the majors at the end of May. His best start so far came against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on June 18 when he threw 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Other than that, he's been so-so and almost sent to the bullpen.

Jason Marquis, meanwhile, is an All-Star.

Whoo Hoo!

I’ve finally joined the 21st century and bought my first HDTV today. All set up and ready to go to watch the Rox in HD. Is it first pitch time yet?

Did you upgrade

your cable or satellite as well?

Reason I ask…I know a ton of people that get an HDTV…then never pay the extra $5 a month to actually get HD programing….and regular programing on an HDTV set…looks like crap.

My neighbor

saw my new HDTV…and went and got one last week…then……never went to Comcast to get the new box so he could actually get HD shows. I just don’t get it. I really don’t.

I have another that’s had a flat screen for almost 2 years..paid big bucks…has Direct TV…but never upgraded it to get HD. “I’m paying enough already”….crap it’s $5, and it’s the difference between night and day.

I saw HDTV’s being sold…not hooked to HD feeds…blew my mind. I don’t get it.

Nationals rotation

coming into this year, Scott Olson had 101 starts, John Lannan 37. The rest of the rotation (whom we face) – zero.

Questions

1) When did the Tulo chant get started ? Do you think Tulo likes it ? What is with the pine tar (or whatever )on the batting helmets.? Is Cargp trying to be like Manny R.?

by butterfly on Jul 6, 2009 6:15 PM MDT reply actions

Guesses and answers:
1) Tulo chant wsa sometime in the latter half of 2007, iirc. 2) He strikes me as a person who enjoys it. If he didn’t, I doubt he’d do a whole commercial centered around it as he did for 2008. 3) Pine tar on helmets is so that hitters can take a little at a time when needed with their gloves to improve their grip on the bat. It’s a convenient place to store it. 4) I don’t know about Manny specifically, but he IS trying to hard to make an impression.

Tulo Chant

got started late in 2007. It was very organic. The “music” was a normal pump up the crowd stuff and is used by all the teams….the Rockies fans just added the “TULO” part on their own.

I don’t know about him….but I hate it. He hasn’t earned it yet.

I like it because I enjoy things that distinguish at-bats from each other,

since I catch almost every game on the radio. Of course, for a distinguisher, a “long, deep fly ball to center that’s gone and not coming back” is nice too.

As for Rockie/fan interaction

I dig “Tulo”, I love “MVP”, but I don’t think it gets better than Spilly’s “Sweet Escape”.

by Bryce on Jul 6, 2009 6:32 PM MDT up reply actions

But a "Chant"?

Chants are rare…they’re hard to do…like one guy on a team could really have one…and Tulo hasn’t really done anything yet to be the ONE guy. Helton I could see….even Holliday before he was traded.

On the plus side, it was organic, and not some PR, front office stunt thing.

Re:organic

Exactly. I feel like anything the fans do because we’re fans and love our team is good. They where our colors, so our support in all it’s forms is very appropriate.

They're not that hard...

Really most guys on the team could probably have them if they chose a chant conducive song for their batting music ala Spilly and Sweet Escape. Rockies fans should be looking for ways to root these guys on in every game they play, and then argue about the merits of them playing anymore afterwards. It’s not like baseball doesn’t have a long proud tradition of honoring mediocrity anyway, Have you looked up Tinker’s or Evers’ stats at the time their famous poem was made (Chance’s were pretty good), or thought about how Mighty Casey immortalizes a slow swinging AAAA slugger? It’s not only the greats that get the immortality in this sport…

Hello Rowbots

I would just like to say that Angel Hernandez is in a tight race with Andy Fletcher for being the worst plate umpire in the Majors. Nothing like a “floating strike zone” to make for an interesting game. Ejection potential = very high.

which means he’s been pretty much a zero factor base stealer in his career…if you take out the notion that he is a pesky distraction that can aid the following hitter

maybe it's more the pitchers

Looking over the starters, only Cook appears to hold runners well. The others had bad records pre-dating this year and/or predating their tie with the Rockies Rockies (for to which that applies).

FWIW, Iannetta’s 24% CS entering this game was by far best on the team. Phillips caught 11 of 20 w/KC, but 1 of 15 with CO.

Just stressful. One of my supervisors had a difficult deadline, and as his editing assistant for the day, I had a difficult deadline too.

I was more of a slow leadoff hitter

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jul 6, 2009 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions

I stopped playing in middle school (what with me being the stereotypical artist and not the stereotypical jock)....

I never hit a HR in the year we won the middle school championship, but as the 4th string corner infielder, I hit .295 (yes, I kept track of my stats) with 14 RBIs, which was second on the team (again, off the bench).

by Greg Stanwood on Jul 6, 2009 7:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Hey that's cool

My one HR would have been a grand slam had the pitcher not thrown a wild pitch over my head the preceding pitch. I don’t remember my stats, but the coaches kept track. That made it more quizzical who they chose for playing time

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jul 6, 2009 7:41 PM MDT up reply actions

I always made a good cleanup hitter.

I didn’t keep specific track, but about half my hits had to come with RISP. Whether or not I am a clutch player or it was just luck remains uncertain.

Hehe.

Yeah. I was probably a full season .195 hitter.

I was really all over the map, actually. I played 2 seasons in middle school. One season we were the second worst team, and the second, we won the Denver championship.

Like the seasons, in the first, I was awful (I was a super utility player that season, but that was the season where they realized I couldn’t play shortstop.) Second season, I was only in LF and RF, starting about every other game. I went from 2006 Clint Barmes to 2009 Clint Barmes.

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jul 6, 2009 7:52 PM MDT up reply actions

The one time I went in to pitch during a game (ran out of piters in an independent league)...

…. I committed five balks.

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned here before, I now spend some time every weak throwing pitches for fun against the wall. Now I’ve gotten pretty good, and can throw 3.5 pitches.

by Greg Stanwood on Jul 6, 2009 8:00 PM MDT up reply actions

My coach told me to pitch in a HS game, coming in no outs and bases loaded

but I’d never thrown off a mount before, even in practice. He told me to throw just fastballs. I got a comebacker, but the catcher didn’t get up for a DP opportunity and screwed it up. Then I had 3 walks, 3 hits and a HBP. So I started throwing junk pitches and got 10 out in a row

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jul 6, 2009 8:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually I was more like the ace reliever

When one of our starters got in trouble. I don’t know if the coach didn’t think I could handle a starting load, or if he just wanted to burn out my arm, but in middle school I threw harder than a lot of the guys.

I am left handed. I walked a lot. One year we got to regionals only because we had Roy Halladay’s sister on our team. She was both our best pitcher, as well as nearly our entire offense.

instead of BP, they just had a family session for guys to stretch and work out with their wives and kids around. Dinger was coaching some of the smaller kids with bats; guys were running the bases with their kids. Some of the older kids did a little fielding.

Nice to see, although it turns out they could have used some BP on Sunday…

Radio trivia answer (and the question again)

Ronnie Belliard once collected a club record 8 RBI in one game for the Rockies in 2003. Who are the others to accomplish that feat?

Andres Gallarraga (3 HR in San Diego)
Larry Walker (Steady drizzle in St. Louis)
Matt Holliday (2005)

As Jeff Kingery says, it’s the Usual Suspects.

Funny story

One time several years ago I was at a game that Jamey Wright was pitching. There was this loud-mouth next to us. He was annoying, but he was hilarious. Wright slipped trying to round 3rd, and he stayed down long enough to get thrown out at 3rd. This guy next to us says, “That has got to be the absolute worst baserunning I’ve ever seen.” It was hilarious. I’m all for a “designated runner”.

Marquis hitting

I love this tendency. When you are going to hit your pitcher should #8 hitter get on but pinch hit if he does not, teams ALWAYS put the pitcher in the on-deck circle even though it is the less probable of the outcomes. A subtle suggestion of confidence that is noted in the game everywhere
